Anyone else collect Mini Lighters?

I remember dumping a weeks worth of Quarters in a Vending machine in TSS, Time Square Stores, in Oceanside, NY, to get all I could.

I ended up with about 6, and boy did they get a lot of Playboy magazine trades in 5th-6th grade.

We thought they were great for lighting firecrackers.....in theory.

I can safley say I've never seen those mini lighters before, but the fact that you have picture of them and they're working is Über cool!

I remember those. There was a vending machine at the mall that had them, along with things like:
Little padlocks, nail clippers, keychains and "smoky pets"....along with other things.
The stuff was usually around a dollar, which was a lot of money for a little kid.

The smoky pets were kind of neat. you put a cigarette in its mouth and lit it....(with a mini lighter?)
It would appear to puff away...sometimes blowing smoke rings!

I got this teeny little plastic bible once from a gumball machine. When you held it up to a light and looked inside, you could read The Lord’s Prayer.

I purchased this Bugs Bunny Space Jam figure complete with basketball in 1996 in case I ever got the Sega pinball. I forgot about the pin when I saw other pins I liked more, but have always kept Bugs NIB (new in bag).

In the 70s, my high school Biology study room usually had a pile of these small-size Science Digest magazines free for the taking. I grabbed one whenever a new issue showed up. The price was right and it was something to read if I didn’t have a National Lampoon.

This coin-op injection mold machine is my favorite memory of Disney World in Orlando. We went the first year it opened. Search “Mold-a-Rama” for more info on this.

How many remember when there were 4 gas stations on one intersection ?

Which leads to: How many remember when there used to be gas wars as the stations fought it out?

How about 20 cents per gallon?

And then, eventually, we had to deal with gas shortages.

Nothing like the old full service gas stations. Where they would wash your windshield maybe wipe the lights.

I worked at a place doing just that. And we checked your oil. They’re still doing it but don’t do much gas business these days.

We called ourselves “petroleum transfer engineers” lol

Well, I don't remember that but I do remember the OPEC oil embargo in 1973. I also remember President Carter telling us to "put on a sweater" and lower our thermostats in the winter of 76-77 - Fireside chat.

Funny me too we were petroleum distribution engineers. Lol. I managed it for 22 year in upstate ny and it is still in business but I have retired. They will be closing soon for the big “c” store.

They would also give us old inner tubes for floating in the creek, and those cool "STP" stickers that we pasted on everything.

Come to think of it, in this world of tubeless tires, I do not remember seeing any floater inner tubes for a long time.

Heck, I tell my family the same thing. And if the A/C is on at night in the summer, I better not see any covers.

It is 110 in the shade. I walk into the engineering building, the AC is big time on and all of the secretaries are wearing sweaters. And the company can't give any raises because all its money is going up the flue.

I can remember warm summer evenings in my neighborhood with the irresistible aroma of hot french fries coming from the local Tastee Freez.
An order of fries and a root beer float put me in Heaven.

I think there was one or two Tastee-Freez locations in Virginia, but Dairy Queen was/is much more common. As a kid, a trip to the oceanfront was not complete without a stop for ice cream. DQ was good for a quick soft serve, but High's had the best real ice cream and milk shakes. For a really special occasion, it was a stop at the Old Straw Hat on the way home. That was an 1890s themed place with an old style candy store in the lobby that had salt water taffy and giant lollipops. You could have a free sundae on your birthday. I loved that place! I played my first Pong machine there.

As kids a once-in-a-blue-moon treat was Mom and Dad taking us to Buffalo Ice Cream Parlor, 4000 W. Irving Park Road in Chicago. We'd get our own small sundaes and get to see some of their huge specialty items.

I don't have any pictures. Back when we bought SS Billiards. Sam Snelling who we bought it from, had started Super Sam's businesses in many of the shopping centers. Kind of like a McDonalds you'd see in a mall location. I you bought a beverage. It came in a tall white paper up with red printing and his likeness on it.

They didn't last too many years.
