Lately I've been seeing shooter rod housing decals, some official ones from Stern, some mods, and it got me wondering, what started that trend? It's newish it feels like, at least to be so common.

I did it in 2014 as part of my Star Trek package (before anyone asks, I don't have these anymore):

And I feel like at the time it was an original idea I came up with, but to honest it's been like 8 years, and I can't remember if I was inspired by something else. Not trying to take credit, I mean, who even cares, but it did make me curious.

Is this a thing now? And when did it become a thing?

Stern is doing it now cause all the housing have holes for LED’s now and to save money they just buy them in bulk and slap a sticker over it on the games that don’t get a lit up shooter rod.

Ah, that's where it's coming from. So when I see a generic Stern decal that's why. Makes sense, thanks!
