I believe mine is busted. I can barely hear any sound coming from the game. Would a potentiometer make it so the game makes a small amount of noise and then become silent?

Early evening bump?

My JP would have no sound when turned on, then intermittent, then by the middle of a game full sound. When I would adjust the pot the sound was scratchy. I replaced it and now the sound is perfect. So from my limited experience, your thought that it is a bad pot sounds reasonable.

Sure a bad pot can cause volume problems.

You can test the pot with a DMM. Set a meter on resistance to an outside lead and the middle lead. Adjust the pot and look for a smooth change in resistance. Move the outside lead to the opposite end and test again. If it bounces are or shows open a bunch, the pot is bad.

To get the value of the pot. Check resistance across to two outside leads.
