I grew up in Las Vegas so I might have a different perspective but that place has turned into the ultimate place to suck every last penny from you in every way.About 3 years ago we went there and if you were gambling they would give you a free drink at most strip hotels.A couple of days ago me and my wife go to the Excalibur. We both put $20 dollars in the poker machines at this really dirty bar expecting to get a beer and a mixed drink. The bartender gives me a beer and tells us we have to pay $14 bucks for the gin and tonic. I pay $455 dollars to stay 2 nights at Caesars Palace as we were seeing Rod Stewart which costs $229 a ticket plus other bullshit fees and then see a $26 dollar online charge added extra. Before the concert we decided to sit at the bar at Caesars and play some poker and have a drink. We both put $20 dollars in and are playing when the bartender there says we have to bet a dollar a hand to get a free drink. We bought our own drinks at the tune of $22 bucks for a beer and a mixed drink. We finished playing and still had half of our drinks but had to get to the restaurant at Caesars. We get ready to go in and the Hostess tells us we have to FINISH our drinks before we get a table. We ask why.She says that the restaurant is separate from Caesars and that is their policy. Then when we check out they try to charge us for the mini bar in our room which already had things took out of it when we got the room which I called them about when we arrived plus $15 charge for WiFi we didn't use.We ate breakfast and it was $120 for four of us for F&*king simple breakfast. The first day we got 4 donuts and 4 coffees and it was 60 bucks.WTF has happened to that place where you could go anywhere and get a $2.99 breakfast at any casino. They charge you up the ass for everything.3 years ago I could valet park and give the valet a tip after picking up my car.Now at Caesars it costs $14 dollars up front to do the same.I was born there but I'm never going back. The original Vegas that I grew up in the 60's and 70's is dead.

They charge you to park in self parking too even if your staying there.

I do have to say that the Tournament of Kings show at the Excalibur was worth the money.$55 for dinner and show but $14 dollars for a mixed drink and $8 for a beer that cost's them 25 cents if that.

The Mob Museum was great as was the Neon Museum although if you are a non resident they charge you twice the price.

I went to Vegas many times between 2000-2008. It was a paradise. Sounds like a giant rip off now. What the hell?
Aside from the Resort Fee crap, Reno still treats you right.

I love Reno. It's a lot like Vegas used to be

My wife was looking at the prices of some of the Restaurants at Caesars. They had one that had a $125 dollar steak. The most I ever paid for a steak was at Commanders Palace in New Orleans and it was just over $50.The best rated restaurant in New Orleans and you have to wear a suit to dine there.

My dad moved there in 1946 and worked at many casinos including the Flamingo which he was a dealer when Bugsy Siegel ran it.When I lived there in the 70's you could see concerts at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing arts for no more than 15 or 20 bucks.Fremont was the best cruising street ever.I had a lot of fun back then but now it's just a ugly big city.

I can go down there once in awhile but whats getting really scary is highway 93 which is the only way down there. When we went home me and my family almost got in a head on when some a hole was passing 2 semis.I had to pull all the way off the road to the right going 75 miles an hour.Scared the hell out of my wife who told me I had just saved our lives. When we were 1 mile from our town a bird carrying a ground squirrel dropped it and it hit my grill and bounced into the windshield. It was a interesting day.

Quoted from Frax:

Your first mistake was staying at Ceasar's.... jeebus. Stratosphere might be a mile and a half from everything, but we were not treated like that there. We didn't really attempt to get free alcohol, but still...
Even the buffet at Ceasar's is ridiculous...the Bacchanal? It was by far the most expensive buffet we went to in 5 days, and the one we liked the LEAST. Want to say it was like 120 EACH?!? But YOLO, ya know? The best thing they had was a blood orange beer sorbet. Just depressing for the money. Won't be going back in there to gamble or eat, ever. Next time we go, we're definitely going over to Fremont to poke around.

LOL this is so true as well. It was cheaper for us to take an Uber from the airport than it was to take one of the shuttles, because the shuttles charge PER PERSON, and Uber doesn't!

We stayed at Caesars because we had my 14 year old daughter and her friend with us and were seeing the show there.

Vegas hasn't been the same since Moe Greene passed

Moe Greene is a character in the Godfather. The real guy was Moe Dalitz

This must be hard on valet parkers. How much do you feel like tipping someone when they charge you 15 bucks to park your car for a few hours.

I just spent a week in Vegas and agree with the OP.. $6.00 bottles of water, $20.00 mixed drinks over priced food & hotel rooms, I'm out!
Here are a few pics from Freemont street..

That's why I didn't take my daughter down to Fremont street.

Quoted from Bugsy:

$20 in 1946 is the equivalent to $249 today according to this inflation calculator: http://www.in2013dollars.com/1946-dollars-in-2017?amount=20
...just saying...

I was comparing from 1977 to now not 1946.

Neon museum?!? Well crap I had no idea there was one, time to hit google.

They have a lot of the old casino signs from yesteryear.

#111 7 years ago

They are adding on to the Neon boneyard to make it bigger as of Friday.

#117 7 years ago

I bitched to Caesars about the extra WiFi charge and they gave in.

All part of the charm.

Id rather go to New Orleans. At least they have all kinds of music playing all the time and better food.

Quoted from beelzeboob:

Vegas annoyed me before I ever got out of the airport. When you have to take a train a few hundred yards at a small airport just to get your rental car and leave, that's BS. But it didn't end there. Every time I had to cross a street on the strip, I was funneled up steps and into a casino, where I promptly got lost and had to find my way back to the street. My first time there was my last time, but at least my trip to PHOF got me into the hobby.

There is definitely a science in LV to get you to go through the casino on your way to anywhere.

#139 7 years ago

When I went home the freeway was so congested I drove through town to get to the highway.

Quoted from vicjw66:

The Raiders new stadium is going to benefit residents of Las Vegas, yet they don't want to pay for it. So in comes all the stadium tax fees on every rental car, and hotel room in Vegas. So the people least likely to benefit have to foot the whole bill for the people that will benefit. Honestly, there should be a federal law outlawing such taxes. You want an NFL team in Vegas, pay for it your damn selves.

Yeah, I agree. And what's with the tax penalty of renting a car at a airport. They totally screw you silly. It's almost twice the price.

All I got from the OP is that he paid $229 to see Rod Stewart. That's like paying $229 for a Vegas t-bone breakfast lol

I had to go see him with my wife.He 's one of her" grail "performers she has never seen.

Quoted from xsvtoys:

Article in the WSJ today on this exact topic if you can access it.
"In Las Vegas, Drinks Flow A Little Less Freely"

That is f**cking unbelievable.A computer that tells the bartender when you can get a free drink. That's it for me.I'm never going back.I'll spend my money in Reno.

#259 7 years ago
Quoted from QuietEarp:

Not these days. I have 4 reliable vehicles. Probably worth $14,000 total. I turn my own wrenches, but damn used cars are cheap these days.
Also a bunch of people have mentioned Reno as a viable cheap alternative to Vegas. We are missing the glitz here, but damn I love this city.

Screw the glitz.I like Reno way better.

Heres a new one. My wifes secretary and her husband were at a hotel in Vegas and grabbed a cart to take their luggage to their room. One of the employees said they would have to rent it for $5 dollars.
