So I was up in NYC for a conference. We looked to go play some games. I was stunned. We have more pinball by a mile in my little hometown of 50K people than in all of greater NYC so it seems. Jackbar was about it for anything other than onesey/twosey places to go. And I sure as hell weren’t going to Barcade given the slap down for an errant hashtag they felt trampled on their rights a few years back. What gives ? Is it just so astronomically expensive to run a business there than pinball is a non starter ? Or do we just need to wait for the post-covid repopulation here for these establishments. Color me surprised given the plethora of restaurants per square block in the city.

Square footage is at a premium and most places would rather have a table for customers than a pinball machine. That table at a restaurant will make more $ than a game ever will.

It’s just how it is. You got barcades with good games, but if they are on your shit list that won’t work (including Barcade Brooklyn, with 10 or so games a few blocks from Jackbar). There’s a smattering of location games here and there. And since Al passed and his brother rented all the games out to Long Island there’s even fewer games out there (Al must be dishing up some
Hauntings over that. He was a lifelong New Yorker and couldn’t give two shits about Long Island, and now the massive collection he spent curating resides at some non descript Long Island strip mall)

Check out the Beer Culture locations on the west side, they have a few nice games. The op, Glen, is trying
To get a small route going.

Going back 20 years here, the “scene” for location pinball has never been too healthy, and it’s worse off now Post covid. It’s a niche, and a passion project for most. A wise man once said “Johnny black pays the rent, not Black Knight.”

10-15, k pins and double that in rent plus labor and upkeep. there would be no profit in this endeavor in NYC

It's way out in Queens by Woodside, but the bar Solid State has eight or so decent machines, at least as of last summer. It doesn't seem to be listed on Pinside's map but it's on pinballmap.com .

No complaints about Jackbar at all. I would have just expected I could visit several locations while in NYC and was stunned to see the seeming veritable wasteland.

Iirc one of the main area ops died a year or two ago

Also Modern Pinball closed during covid?

Sunshine has been "closed for renovations" ever since the pandemic (the laundry part is still open with a couple machines out there.) Word is they're still somehow waiting for some kind of licensing or approvals to reopen the bar area.

Modern Pinball closed for good during the pandemic and sold off the machines.

Never been to Jackbar but the guy who owns is a good guy. Sold some parts to him way back when he had his skateboard shop on the lower east side. Didn’t realize Modern closed down
