Opened up the backbox to my newly purchased No Fear.
What the heck kind of battery is this?
It still holds a charge and all the machines settings are stored.
As you me see it has started to leak and needs replacing.
And what's the easiest rout replacing it?

Remove that ASAP!! Solder a new battery holder to your board and install 3 AA lithium batteries. Replace every ten years after that.

#3 8 years ago

Not sure on the batt, but if it was my machine I just put it back to stock or do a remote battery box.

This is what I used on my No Fear:

Looks like someone remove the original battery holder and put that in it's place.

Please don't solder back a new holder back on the board.....

Install a remote battery holder. Your good to go, solder to the two points and call it a day. Takes maybe 5-10 minutes.

#6 8 years ago

Okay, will be ordering a new holder and solder it remotely.
I gotta admit, this is the first time I seen this kind of weird battery, and I think it looks factory.

#7 8 years ago

No, it's not factory. It's a weird hack, looks like a 5v NiCad to me.

#8 8 years ago

Looks like some kind of cordless phone ni-cad battery. Definitely leaking and definitely needs to be removed NOW!

#9 8 years ago

Best guess is an old 3.6v NI-CD battery for a PC motherboard.

Whether you reinstall a battery holder on this board or a remote holder, make sure they didn't remove the blocking diode from the CPU.

Due to installing not rechargeable batteries right? Is there any easy way to see if the blocking diode have been removed?

GenRad made big logic/power testers. Big in the 80s/90s. I used to work on them.

Looks like someone else did also, and brought home a spare part or two and re-purposed it.

#13 8 years ago

That battery holder pcb is stock, it was used on some pins. The GenRad sticker is from where the pinball manufacturer tested the board on their #6 GenRad machine for Quality control and functionality.

I used to work on a GenRad that had the hard drive in a pullout drawer. The hard drive itself was the size of a large microwave oven. It was way old and way obsolete back then.

This was the battery that was mounted.

I'm going to use this battery holder, will it work?:

Any diode on the board I should look out for?

You need to look at D2. There are two diodes above the ribbon cable that are labeled D1 and D2. D2 is the blocking diode. On your board it has been replaced with a resistor. Change that back to a 1N4148 diode. I have indicated the diode location in the picture below.

Thank you. Out of curiosity what can happen if the resistor is not replaced? Exploading batteries?

Yep. You'll be trying to recharge batteries that aren't meant to be charged. The batteries will, more than likely, explode causing more issues.

#18 8 years ago

Okay. I'll try to avoid that then.

#19 8 years ago

Would it be possible to use 3 rechargeable AA batteries until I get the diode?

#20 8 years ago

I would just run without batteries until you get a diode. Yeah it's a pain losing settings and adjustments.

I know some that have replaced that diode with a standard 1N4001. I'm not saying that's what you should do, I'm just pointing out what some have done. Not sure if that's a good idea based on the specs of a 1N4148 vs. 1N4001.

What is the diode orientation? Very important.

Get your eyes checked after you replace the battery pack

Also, upgrade that game ROM. Looks like it's got 1.1 in it.

Some major improvements from 1.1 to 2.0 relating to how the magnets on the ramp operate if the opto switches get broken. The ramp can melt from the heat of a locked on magnet coil, and a lot of NFs suffered major damage from this.

2.3 is the latest.

If you can't source one locally, I can ship one to you. I would also throw in a couple 1n4148s if you need them.

Yes, I know what battery packs they normally use but the install was really clean looking and made me think this was maybe a factory special or something.

Thanks for your offer! I think I can find the rom locally and the diode will be purchased tomorrow.

I took the board out to desolder the resistor, it turns out that the diode was still there underneth (see picture). So I just used my sidecutters and snipped the the resistor off, no need to resolder a new diode right?

Anyway, I still can't get the battery pack to work, I must be doing something wrong. Please take a look at the pictures and let me know what I might done wrong.

Thanks.

Solder the orange wire to the upper right corner connection above the third battery.

Okay, I'll give it a try.

#30 8 years ago

That will put all 3 batteries in series and you should get 4.5v across those wires.

#31 8 years ago

Yep. Right now you're only using two of the batteries.

#32 8 years ago

Actually, you need to use both of the terminals at the top. Right terminal is positive, middle is ground.

#33 8 years ago

Okay, everything is now in working order!

Thanks all!
