I'm planning to restore my TAF once the CPR playfields are done. It got me thinking, are there any major parts that you can't get new? What's to keep somebody from building one from scratch? I already have:

New DMD
New cabinet/coin door/all exterior hardware
New topper
New rubber set
New plastic set
New main ramp

Planning to get:
New target set
New upgraded speakers
New chair
New thing hand
New translite
New apron

As far as I know, all boards are available. The thing and bookcase motors are available. All bookcase parts are available.

What couldn't you find new if you wanted to just build one?

Maybe. But wouldn't it still be cheaper than buying a beat up players machine for $4k and spending another $4k restoring it?

Probably. It's beyond my abilities for sure, but for the high end restorers that have done a dozen or more TAFs by now, it might be feasible. There's likely legal reasons you can't make a complete machine.

I figured the wire harness would be the biggest stumbling block. You could probably make one if you had an example to work from, but wow does that sound like a lot of work.
