Quoted from alexred:

Not sure why it would be in a pinball machine.

It's a standard feature on gottlieb games starting in the 80s up through their last game.

Other manufacturers just used a momentary switch to cut solenoid power in games from the DMD era.

So at some point it just fell off and someone taped the button? I guess I’ll look for where it used to be mounted, or if it is even mountable?

It's fairly common for people to modify this switch so that the game doesn't turn off when the coin door is opened.

Normally, it's screwed down, and the button faces the opening of the coin door, and a bracket on the coin door pushes against the switch.

The simplest way to bypass it I've seen is just to rotate the housing 90 degrees and pull the stopper (switch button) out. I'm guessing that the person who taped it up wasn't aware that it could be pulled out to set it in the "on" position.
