I guess this will be the place for bitching. HA

With that said, what makes you dislike, hate, ect.. a certain pin?
Please be a little specific when bullying on a poor defenseless pinball machine.
Everyone has such stong feelings as to why this pin or that pin is good or bad. I like just about any pin in what is considered the modern era. Maybe its cause I'm new.

I don't dislike any pins. I dislike elements of pins and wish they were different. I don't think there are any modern pins I can't enjoy despite all their flaws.

I suppose I could answer the thread by listing the pins I think have most flaws but I don't feel like it right now. I'm already being pretty negative about WOZ and that's enough for now.

    EDIT

Ha! You changed the thread title from WHAT MODERN PINS DO YOU DISLIKE? Glad my post made sense to you!

    #3 11 years ago

I hate pins that are so fast you cannot drink with one hand any play one handed with the other. Kidding

I really do not care if it is fast or slow, I just want a goal. That goal could actually be a higher score so I really do not hate any pin at all because you can always be trying for a higher score.

    #4 11 years ago

the only one i currently "dislike" is my TSPP because i have a couple of switches and a coil or two that are not tweaked in properly. if i ever stop playing the other pins i have then i might take a look at it, but with WOZ on its way and LotR already here, i don't know if there will be enough room in my brain to hold the rules and goals for WOZ, LotR, and TSPP. i am going to have to get a reader board for the machines so i know what goals i should be going for.

I dont like virtual locks. Let me see the ball locked on the playfield so i know how many more till multiball...

    #6 11 years ago

To many gadgets (toys) on the PF's of the modern pins, just clutters them up.

    #7 11 years ago

    Limited Editions.

I wish there was only one model for both location and home play, and I wish they had all the same bells and whistles.

Hey, I can wish right? LOL.

I also miss inline drops. Someone bring back inline drops!

    #8 11 years ago

The only feature I can think of that I don't like on any pin is the spinning disk on the pf. Like in TMNT and several others. Takes some skill out and replaces it with luck.IMO.

    #9 11 years ago

Auto-plunger. Well, I guess lack of a manual plunger is more precise. I don't mind when there's both.

    #10 11 years ago

    Dislikes:
    - lack of random ball movement (too much spoonfed shots)
    - lack of non licensed original themes
    - lack of fun licensed themes
    - lack of innovation
    - lack of creative designs
    - lack of passion / fun in the design process
    - lack of great animations of display
    - lack of simple addictive rules / goals that are easy to understand but are not so easy to achieve (so you keep trying, at least I do)
    - endless ball times (if an average player like myself can play a single ball for over 10 minutes the game bores me quickly, especially if by ball 3 you've seen everything the game has to offer and there's no challenge left).
    lack of powerfull slingshots
    - lack of a manufacturer who understands what works (and why) and made pinball popular (you can copy a layout, or even do a proven theme and screw up. Then I think you just don't get it.)
    - disappointing games (that don't live up to even the most modest expectation)

    #11 11 years ago

    sick of comic book themes

    #12 11 years ago

I dislike the price of NIB machines that have escalated beyong inflation, salary and bonus increases.

    #13 11 years ago

Rookie mistakes by seasoned engineers (think QR code promises and stupid drop target airballs on TFLE)

Stand-up targets where drops would be MUCH better--think IJ4 and every Stern non-LE since WPT.

Reuse of the same mechs (mousetrap ball lock by Stern, etc)

    #14 11 years ago

I'm tired of one or more magnets that throw the ball out of control on practically every new game that comes out. The feature itself wouldn't offend me if it were used more sparingly. But to have them on almost every game - it feels really repetitive and I'm just tired of it. Also, I really miss drop targets.

    #15 11 years ago

    Spinning discs.

It was a neat little novelty back on Whirlwind. But it's like every new Stern table has one.

are you familiar with Fireball from 1972 or so?

    #17 11 years ago

Saucers that dont hold balls (TF)
Cannons that are made from shit parts and are not tested prior (2 ball issue)
Small crappy DMD graphics where the instructions go so fast you cant read them
Lack of interaction with the player
    Lack of testing
    Lack of new rules
    Lack of innovative playfields

    #18 11 years ago

    Photoshopped playfields and backglasses

I liked the old days when the back glass told its own little story

    Playfields today just look messy

    #19 11 years ago

ANY VIDEO MODES. its a pinball machine... not a video game . hated them from day one..

    #20 11 years ago

Virtual ball locks piss me off. I want to see a ball physically locked

    #21 11 years ago

    LEDs
Straight flowing ramps that return straight to the flipper
    Photographic playfield art
Photographic backglass art (peoples' faces especially)
    Too many multiballs
    Lack of quality control

    #22 11 years ago

    Plastic ramps

    #23 11 years ago

Backboxes that are lit by a single flourescent bulb; no flashers. DMD's - enough of the early 90's technology already!

    #24 11 years ago

    i hate the virtual locks.
i hate the new line of art for pfs, crappy photoshoped monsters!
i don't like multiballs with so many balls. camon 4, 5 or more balls at the same time? for what?
i don't like the fact that nobody does originals anymore...

    #25 11 years ago

I don't like any video game modes - super suckass.

I don't like when the DMD does not always show the other player's scores.

    #26 11 years ago
    Quoted from PorkChopExpress:

    Please be a little specific...

You want specifics? Sure, I'll give you specifics. You know what I really hate? Outlanes. Seems like every game has them these days and the ball is always going down them. WTF? Can we please ditch the outlanes? And why do the flippers have to be so far apart? It's like the Grand Canyon down there. They should move them closer together by at least an inch. Seriously.

    #27 11 years ago

I wonder if any manufacturer has ever held a survey like this. It may seem silly, but the outcome could really help to design/build better games.

    #28 11 years ago

    No original themes!

    #29 11 years ago

Games that are released with Beta versions of the code. Are you kidding me? Here are 8 great features, only 6 of them work at all, 3 are complete, 2 just sit there. Think how happy you'll be in 6 months when you're getting tired of the game and we finally give you code for these (if the game continues to sell well). Why it will be like having a new game!

+1 I miss controlled lamps in the backbox

    LOL!

Fake knockers, I don't like them on women or pinballs.

    #32 11 years ago

Cut-and-paste backglasses. Iron Man has a cool backglass, Stern Indiana Jones and Batman Dark Knight have terrible looking ones.

    #33 11 years ago

Photoshop art on pf and translite.

Same art when different versions are deployed.

    Incomplete software.

    Lack of a cool toy.

    #34 11 years ago

The overall art package. I hate translite photo-shoped art.

Give me a beautiful backglass any day.

    #35 11 years ago

Just picking 1...I would have to say LE/pro/whatever.

From a business standpoint I totally understand it and agree with it; but I don't care for it.

EDIT: Haha I didn't even think aboot incomplete software as stated above. Whoooops.

    #36 11 years ago

Not a fan of virtual locks, especially in multi-player games when it was possible to 'steal' the other player's locks!

... or, Chicgo Coins Casino (which had 2), Twin Win, and Fireball Classic.

    #38 11 years ago

Incomplete software is the reason I haven't bought a NIB Stern yet.

    #39 11 years ago

    crappy looking playfields

    #40 11 years ago

Many games have too many multi-ball modes for my taste, and most video modes are horrible imo.

I wasn't alive yet. And by the time I discovered pinball, EM's were nowhere to be found.

I think I have only played 2 EM machines in my entire life, and they were both home machines.

    #42 11 years ago

    Price.
    Oh and photo shopped artwork.

    #43 11 years ago

My main dislike is that almost every pf layout is the same fan layout, no originality or inventiveness or fun. Ramps aren't the be-all, end-all of pinball.

    #44 11 years ago

Way overboard, with the photoshop art package: playfield, translight, cabinet and plastics. Let's go back to the old school of graphic style / hand drawn art.

    #45 11 years ago

Huge, cheap loooking toys on the playfield. I like a lot of the newer Sterns but XMen is one of the ugliest and most ridiculous things I have ever seen.

    #46 11 years ago

(Incomplete summary of) rules printed on a stamp-sized piece of paper using a 4-point font...
(Or am I becoming farsighted ?)

You don't like "Attack of the Giant Pez Dispensers"?

    #48 11 years ago

No light boards. I don't like the tube light. I like the older pins backglass/translights that had light shows.

    #49 11 years ago

I dislike the price point. 2k higher and you get 1k less stuff in the game than you got when they were $3500 NIB.

    #50 11 years ago

Any pin that you have to download a ruleset sheet before you understand the goal. I like simple modes that has a nice reward be it multiball or a jackpot. Something that I can just walk up to on location and play it and know whats going on.
