I picked up a cheap Fireball home edition this weekend. Delivered it to the local high school this morning. No backglass and the guy cut the legs short to make a coffee table. Luckily, he didn't hurt anything internal, so it's still intact(aside from the missing backbox). The kids will likely be retheming this and converting to an Arduino/Raspberry Pi control setup.

Quoted from luckycreature:

Im getting an old Bally Red saver cap to mount in the middle of drain and hope to replace the flipper buttons with something better.

First order of business: replace the flipper buttons. They are utter crap, and the machine become playable IMO only after this is done. I had a selection of pushbutton switches in my spare parts, so I can't tell you off the top of my head which size you need. They were meant for a MAME machine.
I bought one and donated it to the same high school engineering program that I worked on a Fireball home edition for. They replaced the flippers and started on a retheme(mine was a PotC version). They were looking at gutting the controls and switching to an Arduino+Raspberry Pi+Mission Pinball Framework setup.

nice pickup. I'd love to have a hotline

Many moons ago, my dad picked up an old Hot Line and had it sitting around for years. This was prior to my pinball interest kicking into high gear, and I sadly didn't try to bring that old EM back to life. I think he gave it away to someone years ago. I have regrets....

Still in the van, since I need to do some rearranging.
It was about 97 or so when I was in college. My wife and I were bowling at the student union, and she decided to go into the arcade room and play a pinball game. It was Scared Stiff. I was instantly hooked.
The one on the right is Scared Stiff. Took a couple of decades, but it's mine! Along with a BSD.

I got to play a Baywatch the other day. I was impressed. Fun game.

Quoted from cottonm4:

My Op friend said he bought a Meteor at a coin op auction for $5.00 and then scrapped it because the boards were bad. This was before Alltek started selling its boards.

It's sad, because even then, replacing it was possible. It's not like people weren't designing systems. Hell, you could have pulled something together with the guts of a Timex-Sinclair or the like. It's not like the MPU design on these was earthshattering.

#18337 3 years ago
Quoted from bluespin:

Back then there wasn’t much of a collector market. Operators would rather destroy a pin than sell it to a non operator. They didn’t want people to stay at home playing pins/vids rather than playing in location as that would hurt a fellow operator.

I believe it, but it is a shame.

To be fair, this ain't just a SF thing. In Kansas, our neighbor came out on his front step, pulled down his drawers and sprayed shit all over the front of his house. When we called the cops, he told them that it was a dog(what dog could shit up the side of your house?!). They made him clean it up. Nothing else was done. As far as I know, he's still pickling his brain in alcohol all day long, if he's not dead.
I don't miss that town at all.

These days, there are enough options for aftermarket boards and such that you can literally start with a partially populated playfield and end up with a fully functional game. With things like APC + LISY, you can actually get the original rules working on games as well via pinmame. Just a thought before sacrificing machines to build new ones....

#21159 2 years ago
Quoted from KSUWildcatFan:

I'm not even sure what some of that is, but it sounds like a hell of a lot more work than taking a beat donor game built on the same platform and swapping out PF/roms to build a restored different game.

It definitely is. One of my projects right now is documenting the difficulty in doing just that(F-14 pf to fully playable game, with options for original and enhanced rules) with an APC board. I'm also working on repowering a Middle Earth with a cobrapin.
I fully admit that I have a problem.
But, I'm just pointing out that there are options for building games like this that don't take donor machines. Or at least, not complete machines.

EDIT:
It occurs to me that I was just back in Kansas last week. I should have pinged you to grab a beer.

#21162 2 years ago
Quoted from KSUWildcatFan:

Absolutely! I didn't get any of the pins from the warehouse haul, unfortunately.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened to the huge pile of pin parts that was in Wichita at Bob Nelson's Gameroom Warehouse. I like to think that it's still sitting somewhere in storage, waiting to be found....

Quoted from KSUWildcatFan:

Crappy old playfields are never going to be swapped back into anything, it just wouldn't make any sense to spend the time doing it. Thus, at that point they're only left with one purpose: art. People getting butthurt about it need to just let it go.

I see worn out playfields and get the itch to turn them into homebrew mashup games. Turn that beast into a weird coffee table cocktail pin with Mars Attacks sound bites.

I did manage to pick up a "crappy" Scared Stiff pf left over from someone's playfield swap. I was going to use it for art, but when I picked it up, it just had the normal wear around the holes that will get covered up by cliffys, so it's getting swapped right back into my Scared Stiff. It was quite a score!

#25658 1 year ago
Quoted from KSUWildcatFan:

Drowning in projects that belong to friends.

I hear that. But I just gotta scratch the itch
There's a homebrew based on a Demo Man about 5 feet in front of me, one that is getting art next week in the garage, and 3 more in storage waiting a spot. None of those are counting the playfield swap I'm doing on Scared Stiff!
