Man I loved those molding machines at the SA Zoo when I was a kid! I think they had recomissioned them a couple years back. They're selling them off now?

edit: nevermind, thought you had bought the machine! I get it now!

I had a lot of fun playing this one at TPF this year. I actually love the cheeseball art package on this one too. It’s in pretty good physical condition, but unfortunately had a little nicad leakage to sort out. For $175 though...

I wish it was my home (and my game) but I moved this for a friend. He’s not a pinball guy and could use a good tech in Austin that has experience with this era of Gottlieb. I’m fairly certain it needs the ground mods done as most of its problems are just quirks. I just don’t have the level of comfort working on such a rare game that I don’t own myself.

Second that. A game I can’t ever seem to get my hands on.

Quoted from yzfguy:

Wow, that looks like it has a lot of unique features. And way cool artwork!

I'm beyond stoked to finally have Spooky in my collection. I love Zaccarias and even though I wasn't on the hunt for most of the years, I've wanted a Spooky since I saw a grainy pic 15-20 years ago. Now... where to put it?! I'll be selling* off some games soon, I suppose.

*NOT SPOOKY!

I'm tired of waiting for the reveal.
Boo Could It Be?Boo Could It Be?
All the way from Italy!

So the story goes, I snagged my grail pin from rvdv when he listed one of his finds back in April. I couldn't have been happier to add the ever-elusive Spooky to my collection. I've wanted one since I first made a "rare pins" folder collecting pictures of weirdo, euro, prototype, etc games back around 20 years ago (I was a teenager!). I never thought I'd see one, let alone own one.

A couple weeks go by and I'm just scrolling through Instagram at 1am with some all too common insomnia. This pic shows up in my feed...
58724816_2112836692103899_8112833402668843008_o (resized).jpg58724816_2112836692103899_8112833402668843008_o (resized).jpg

My heart stopped for a second and I thought "what the hell?" I looked up the account that posted it, a design/vintage shop in Northern Italy. I think "damn, I'm glad I got mine... I wonder if he's selling that one and for how much?" Cut to 5 minutes later, me asking. The price was well within reason and I think "oh jesus, am I going to try and import a game... that I already own?" Hours and hours and hours of research, bugging strangers in Europe for help, and ultimately finding help through Pinside (I'll wait to name names in case he doesn't want to open the door to tons of people asking him to do this same thing )

After a looooong journey, and three different shipping companies, I have Spooky #2 here in Austin. I was hoping the transformer would be convertible like my other Spooky (which is the only one documented with a convertible transformer... still). So I'm waiting for the step up converter to show up in a day or so before I can turn it on and start messing around. The playfield is wedged in the cab somehow too. It. Will. Not. Budge. Someone, at some point, has done a "resto" on it, clearcoating the playfield (not the greatest job but not terrible either, just a little clear settling around inserts). The inside of the cabinet and the underside of the playfield were painted black too, so I'm not sure I'll be able to get the production number. Based on the serial number, I think it's a late production.

Pics from my first Spooky:

And the new guy in town:
Screen Shot 2019-07-16 at 6.10.07 PM (resized).pngScreen Shot 2019-07-16 at 6.10.07 PM (resized).png

No, I don't know what I'm going to do with it yet. I've got to move it around a bit. it's just stored temporarily at work for now.

The Pinsider who helped me import the game was none other than rare game extraordinaire rvdv (Thanks again forever!)

I did feel a little bit guilty taking it from its homeland, but I guess not enough to commit the crime. Sorry!

#12690 4 years ago

colsond3 can help you with that decision....

Eventually I'll look to trade for a game on my wishlist. Eventually...

#12703 4 years ago
Quoted from Colsond3:

Like eventually now? Come on Chris, you don’t need two of them.

It was a lot of stressful and risky work to get it over here (made much quicker and less risky with @rvdv's awesome connections). That said, lemme have a little fun first!

I haven't even been able to plug it in yet because the step down converter doesn't support the Italian 3 prong plug on the game.

Finally got it home, here’s a few more pics of my brother’s Voltan pickup. Boards have some hacked up work but damn look at this playfield!

Anyone know what the numbers stamped under the coin box there are? They don’t match the serial number.

word of mouth, she was practically in my backyard also. Just shows there are still lots of games out there. Found out one of my neighbors has a T2 in his basement so went over and offered to buy it. He wanted $4500 not working. Win some lose some i guess.

A friend tipped me to a Data East Simpsons (a game I truly must have some day just for theme alone... if you only saw all the Simpsons stuff I have) that is literally 4 houses away from me. It's soooo beat up and literally has rubber bands on the playfield.

The guy wanted $5500.

Snagged what I assumed were going to just be parts when I saw the post but this Black Jack is pretty damn nice, I might have to save it. Unfortunately the guy was converting games to Virtual Pins until his wife said enough! The head on Black Jack got run over by a sander and brushed on primer Will need to stencil the art back on and remount the boards. Harlem Globtrotters cab is now a VP but the playfield is totally populated and I got those boards with the lot too, which look pretty decent/repairable.

Anyways, anyone have a backglass for Black Jack laying around? Didn’t come with. I know bgresto is an option but dang those are pricey. I’ll have to get some stencils for the head too.

I should cross post to the horror thread but picked up these filthy beasts today from a dilapidated house. I just went to pick up the Hot Hand and before I left the lady told me “there’s a second game you can have free!” (after I had already negotiated way down from her $300 asking price on the Hot Hand). I didn’t even ask what and internally screamed when I saw it was another classic Stern! The playfields, backglasses, and electronics are shot/ripped up but the cabinets are surprisingly stronger than almost any other 70s/80s game I’ve ever picked up.

These will serve me well in my quest to scratch build a Quicksilver!

Just did a four hour around trip to pick up my first free pinball machine. Can't go wrong at that price! The seller/giver-a-way said I saved it for going to the dump.
The main issue is a cracked/broken back glass that the movers did. Anyone know if they make replacements and if so where to buy.
Let me know.....Thanks Mike

You can also get them from Coos, who I think can recreate the mirroring that bgresto cannot: http://www.coos.net/bingo_e/backglasses.html

For some reason I’m remembering Farfalla having it. My brother has one. I could be wrong.

#15932 3 years ago

Devil Riders too. We’ve got 6 Zac titles between us. I just remembered some mirroring in the outer glass on Farfalla, specifically around the player numbers. Again, I could be wrong. Mikespinball should be able to tell if I’m just suffering from some Mandela effect.

Edit: my brother checked, he also thought there was mirroring. We were both wrong. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yesterday, but CL scores can still happen! Slight battery leakage, cracked playfield glass (yikes! plate glass!) and the side rails are all pried to hell, but thankfully PinballLife makes replacements. The pf is in great shape except right at that center rollover. Backglass is a solid 9.5 too!

I need to hurry up and get my backyard game room finished up! Hurting today from all the ridiculously steep, curved stairs I had to lug it down!

Y'all I can't even believe the score I got on this today. 5 hours on the freezing Texas roads (we're not used to this stuff!) and honestly blown away the CL seller held his word on his listed price. The seller was flipping a house and the homeowner had told him to just chuck it in the dumpster! Thank goodness he didn't! Anyone know where to get the prototype cabinet stencils?

Congrats on finding a Spooky ! Is there a story behind finding it? I hope it didn't have to go far with all that snow around!

Can’t wait to try for tube shot. Amazing deal, looking forward to getting this playing again. I have a hardtop I’d ordered in anticipation of finding a beater Xenon but of course I’d nab this beautiful original. Anyone need a hardtop?

Our dad loves the show, so naturally I had to pick it up for him. Love Pat Lawlor’s design on this even though the theme is not for me.

She’s in dire need of attention both in form and function. Story is, this was a tournament games at TPF back in 2008 when it was new, where the seller bought it after the show and had it at his house since. He converted it to LEDs and swapped out some rubbers here and there, but I don’t know that he ever changed the balls.

He told me he cleaned the playfield right before he listed it. I can’t imagine how dirty it was before! Took a heck of lot of conversation time to get the seller to commit to his (previously assumed low, but now clearly appropriate) asking price.

Proof that HUO is a meaningless term that should be eliminated from the hobby’s lexicon!

Anyway, dad likes it (or at least the theme of it) so far and that is as the primary point. Need to fix the centrifuge optos before he can really play it though.

I picked up this Xenon a few weeks ago for a total steal. It was stored outside… by a pool… in San Antonio TX. Somehow the backglasses were both perfect.

Went to pick up my Big Game playfield from a restoration/clearcoat and took my brother’s Warlok up for its own restoration treatment. Can’t wait to see that one when it’s done! It needs a pro’s help, because it’s been mistreated in its life.

Was that the $300 Batman Forever on FB?

#21629 2 years ago

Wow, you picked it up today? I didn’t even message the guy yesterday because I didn’t think it’d hold for the time it’d take to drive up there. Nice score! Batman Forever was the first game I ever played at a home. My friend in 6th grade, his dad bought one NIB. Anytime I stayed over, I’d literally stay up ALL NIGHT playing it. Great game.

Not necessarily brought home today but officially added to the collection: my Star Gazer scratch build!

Made in fits and starts. Painted the cab in January, got the harness in June. Played my first game this morning. Some kinks to iron out but it’s “done”!

Quoted from T3quila:

That is spectacular! Where did you get the plans for the cabinet, or did you buy one and just painted it?
Congratulations! That has to be the nicest one out there!

It was converted from a Stern Hot Hand* that I pulled out of a hoarder’s horror house. Somehow the cabinet was structurally in better shape than almost any other pin of that era I’ve owned. Playfield, backglass, and everything else was wrecked.

*I did find the correct 16B-6 transformer Star Gazer uses to install for this build though.

Back on track here, I have a problem and cannot pass up a deal. For the price I was expecting to just be picking up a parts pin that I’d use as a conversion base for another stern. Much nicer than expected for <$300 including gas and a forgotten step ladder at the seller’s house!

Weekend score story! Just got them setup today though.

Early Sunday morning, I was sitting on the couch, casually checking my eBay saved searches. Some games popped up for sale in Dallas that seemed like they might be too good to be true. Since it was eBay, I figured, low risk on my part. i could file a claim and get a refund.

I calmly turn to my partner and tell her, “So I just bought a Lord of the Rings pinball machine

I had my doubts since the seller had 0 feedback and the games looked really nice for the price. But they were all pictured in the same room. I had selected “pick up” as my shipping option. Hours pass on in the day, I don’t hear anything from the seller. I temper my expectations.

Finally, sometime in the afternoon I get a message with a phone number. We exchange some texts and I am suddenly hitting the road to Dallas!

Well-to-do medical professional (doctor?) downsizing from maybe the nicest home I’ve ever been allowed inside. Pins were some of the last things in there. eBay didn’t allow him to list them all, being a new user, so he had a couple more to sell! All his games were HUO, including the LOTR he bought in 2004 (but it got its fair share of play as his favorite and longest running game. HUO is a silly and meaningless term). Anyway, I had a choice between a minty Walking Dead Premium or Game of Thrones Premium. Neither have been themes on my radar but I read so much about Lyman’s code on TWD, and when he named his price, I nearly bit my own tongue off before saying “how do I pay you?” If I could’ve fit the GOT, I would’ve taken it too. It up being sold to a dealer in California over the phone while I was there with him. Think Stern Pro prices pre-explosion. Quite a score.

Super nice guy, helped me load them down the stairs (I would’ve died solo). Mini-vans are the best pin haulers.

Excited to finally get some solid time on both of these. LOTR has been a longtime want for my brother. We have never even played a TWD Premium before! Need to figure out why the magnets aren’t working but otherwise it’s perfect.

After nearly 6 weeks of back and forth, fighting with an absolute junkyard dog that had this half-a-F2K listed for nearly the price of a complete working one. I finally acquiesced to a manageable but still overpriced deal. Luckily the seller lived literally on my way home from my brother’s house, so at least no extra gas expense. Finally have a lower cabinet for my Cheetah scratch build! Bumping that one up in my project queue.

I really hope my pinsider brother isn’t checking this thread because we’re comically low on space.

I couldn’t help myself. Great Craigslist score this morning. I was the first to respond around 7am, less than 10 min after it went up. The sellers were super nice to accommodate me working today and then driving 90 min deep into the Texas hill country. I was super up-front that they were going to get inundated. They laughed at how right I was by the time I got there late in the day. This game has been on my wishlist for ages and, jeez, I got lucky on the condition of this particular one. To do right by the sellers, I (unprompted) paid a lot over their listing price, as a thank you and to be fair to its value. They were blown away and said “are you sure?!” I didn’t bid it up in advance of arriving, but I found out *after* I paid that others tried. I feel very happy with this pick up, and I made some honest folks day too. Win-win! Good karma!

It’s got some typical hacks to the rectifier board and MPU, no big deal to either. The worst is someone drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom for some reason. Really though, super nice! I forgot to take a pic of the backglass illumination lamp board— it looks bright white brand spanking new. I’ll need to move some things around before I can set it up this weekend.

You can absolutely strap around the head. If you didn’t already have the green packing strap holding the head in place, you’d actually have to.

No head? No siderails? Is it just a cab?

#25648 1 year ago

There's definitely nuance y'all are not considering with these coffee tables. Obviously a beater bare AFM playfield is not the same as the dunce a year or two ago that destroyed a complete but non-working Nine Ball to make an ugly $300 coffee table because the game was "broken anyways". Or the guy I had to somewhat overpay ($750) for a headless F2K because he wanted to make a coffee table that he thought would be worth $5000 when he was done (not a chance in hell. Just repairing this crappy cab has been hell). I'm using that cabinet and mechs to build a Cheetah this year. Now let's not start talking about game conversions...

Anyone got any new games?!

FINALLY brought home an Alice Cooper after I bailed on my preorder back when it was new

Traded my way into this one at TPF. Lined up with my brother’s Spooky games. We’re gonna have to transport Transporter somewhere else (note: not for sale) in a few weeks when Scooby Doo arrives SpookyBug

It was transported back to Austin for me by the seller, Pinballz, since I was out of room from needing to bring home the ACNC above and a whole boatload of parts from the swap meet.

I’ve had a lot of classic sterns but this is my first Stars! Willkommen zu Hause, Sterne

Quoted from Star_Gazer:

Got this monstrosity this week, its got no name, any suggestions welcome
Besides that, what to do with it? its got 3 bumpers, 10 targets and working flippers (and is controlled by DIY boards). option A sell it, B remove all and make some virtual pin(but its wide body), C use the parts to repair an Stargazer pinball, D keep as is
[quoted image][quoted image]

It would be a shame to part it out or, even worse, turn it into a *shudder* virtual pin. Someone worked hard on it and it's unique. Don't kill it because you don't like it.

Nothing on there seems appropriate to use in repairing a Star Gazer. Just buy the parts you need. Anything on that thing is readily available, and again, none of it looks like it'd be "correct" on a Star Gazer.

Games I’ve had with operator lock bars I’ll remove the metal piece and just put the carriage bolts back in the holes until a true repair is done. Much less visually obtrusive.

Not really a game that was on my list, but have you ever been PAID to get a game before?! First time for me!

I tried helping some nice folks get their game working again. It was about an hour and half drive round trip to help them, so they felt a little guilty using my time but I had hopes to get it running for them quickly. First trip I found the coils were not firing, display wasn't coming on, and the playfield lights out, but it was booting. There were a few improperly sized fuses in some spots, the pf light fuse was missing entirely, and some real shoddy soldering from a previous repair tech back in 2012.

I got the fuses swapped out and it was popping the solenoid fuse. So I poked around the boards and found 3 blown transistors on the driver board, all for the solenoids. I took the board home and got it repaired and tested. Went back this last weekend to put it in and the fuse was still popping on the solenoids. I was fairly certain there was going to be a shorted coil somewhere (the fuse I originally found in the solenoid spot was 2amps higher than spec, so maybe why it had blown transistors). Anyway, I told them I'd have to spend time ohming out all the coils to figure out which one it was, order parts, and come back again. I had no idea how long all of that would take.

Their response was "no, forget it, we'll just send it to the dump". I let out a wide-eyed NOOOO! and offered to return the money they'd paid me for my time so far ($120) and give them some money for it. She said absolutely not, handed me $25 more dollars for my gas and said "take it, we had a good life with it. I hope you can find the time to fix it and enjoy it." I really did try to refuse their money. They were just tired of it being broken and were too old to move it themselves anyway. Unfortunately my project queue is deep right now so it's just gonna be folded up for a bit. It's in overall good condition and came with some cool repair notes (not pictured but the NOS ramp was $25 and coil stops were $5 in 1998!)

Even their original sales receipt from Christmas 1992, when they bought it from @gexchange!

TL;DR… Today I did a straight trade for my nice fixed up Xenon (great playfield, fully shopped, but kinda tatty cabinet) for a decent unshopped South Park.

Another one not on my list but a deal I couldn’t say no to. A few weeks ago I drove out to one of the affluent Austin suburbs to work on an older couple’s game for them. By the end of the endeavor they just gave me the game for free (a Hollywood Heat, the story is 3 or 4 pages back). While I was out that way, I was also put in touch with someone who needed work on their South Park. I went over to check it out and it was stuck in a boot loop, never quite making it on. Someone at some point had clipped off the battery pack because there was some suuuuper light corrosion on the terminals. I cleaned them off with my finger, pressed on the chips, and reseated the connectors — back in action. There were several other things that needed to be done — one broken target, very dirty overall, but everything seemed to be “working”.

As we were chatting, he said he was really just planning to sell it because he had some young grandchildren and he didn’t think the game was appropriate. The game actually conveyed with the house when he bought it a few years back, so he had no major attachment to it. I told him he really shouldn’t spend money having me fix it up and he could net more money just selling it as-is. I wasn’t interested because I am up to my eyeballs in project games right now.

As the chatting continues, he said the only pins he would really want were the two he played a ton as a kid: Xenon and Eight Ball Deluxe. I laughed and said I had both of those and was planning to sell them soon. He said “what if we traded?!” While I love the show, this game has never been a hit to me even back when it was new. South Park really needs an updated game (or an awesome code update). He said one game for the other.

We chatted it through and I explained the values clearly, told him he was free to google it all up and make a decision later. I’d have to return with the game to do any sort of trade anyway, so it wasn’t going to be a quick transaction. Almost a month later I made it back out there and did the swap. I also gave him some wall hanger playfields, backglasses, a couple vintage neon beer signs, and some more decor stuff for his casita. He was super happy to be playing Xenon again! Win-win (except for that project queue of mine )

That damn Xenon. I need to drive back out there soon and replace a broken drop target. Had it playing flawlessly and post-trade it's been a maintenance nightmare.

I forget the model but it's a Magliner. It wasn't cheap!

#28081 70 days ago

Just in case there's any confusion over the "stair climbing" note above. It is not powered like an Escalera. Around $830 sounds right for today's dollar though. I think it was around $650 several years back.

I have a project Time Warp that I've already repinned almost every connector, repaired the MPU and driver boards (bench test works), installed Inkochnito's bridge board, new rubbers, LEDs, etc. Displays confirmed good at the time I bought it last year. It actually worked but had some flakiness that I think was due to the connectors.

I lost the space I had it set up in while I was working on it though so it got stuffed in storage and I kinda would rather it get out of there. $725 is what I have in it. I had a flipper mech removed when I had to move it. Have it ready with a new coil (old one had a broken lug) but not installed. Backglass is not bad, done some cabinet structure support with fiberglass. Playfield is actually very nice. Definitely needs the drop targets rebuilt (I was going to do the NMP boards).

It's not far from the finish line. Not as popular as the ones on your list but if you or anyone is interested, lemme know.

Yep. It’s crusty. Lots of spider webs and nicotine stains. Back door is missing and the backglass is shot. My EM skills may make me unqualified for such a game as rare as Double-Up , but I’ll treat it with the utmost respect.

I’m just a sucker for a rare game I may not get to play otherwise, so I couldn’t help myself. I also somewhat feared it ending up in another owner’s hands who had no idea of its rarity, such as these very nice owners I bought it from. It was apparently in a closed down bar in Iowa as recently as a couple years ago! He picked it up there and drove it to Texas. It was tossed in with a deal on a jukebox, but they had no pinball knowledge. Since it didn’t work when he got it home, it just sat in the garage since then.

I always dug the art on this one too, since seeing the huge mural at the pacific pinball museum several years back. I thought for sure Coos or BGresto had this one in their files but I don’t see either having it listed. Ruh Roh.

Looks like Pecos did a great thread on one a number of years back. Looking forward to digging into this thread. https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/bally-1970-double-up-minimalist-restoration

These girls have lived hard and I need another project like a kick in the head, but how many of us would turn down a free game?

Booted up and played but obviously some repinning, cleaning, and ground mods needed. Cabinet had some moisture damage, backglass is shot, but playfield isn’t too bad. Battery looked ok but… snipped!
