Picked up a Williams Firepower 2 for myself and a Stern Galaxy for a friend. Pretty jealous that Galaxy didn’t come home with me!

Picked up an Af-Tor a couple weeks ago and an OXO a month or so ago.

Brought the Meteor home last night. It went from the pick location to my friend’s house.

Had to do some re-soldering in the back box; now I can fix the center drop targets and replace rubber + LED it out. Probably not a long-term keeper, but it’s fun for now. Working fine aside from that center drop target bank.

Black Knight 2K came home the same night and I’m slowly working on that one. Mostly just a few broken plastics, old lighting, and aged plastics there. Need to adjust some sluggish targets (they trigger properly, a few just fall slowly) and rebuild flippers, but otherwise working fine.

8ball Deluxe was promised to a friend and probably won’t ever come to my house. It worked okay but had some glitches because some of the wiring is, uh...melted-ish. I’ll let him have fun dealing with that. Sounds like he’s going to fully restore it, so that’s neat.

Quoted from LesManley:

This one kind of came out of nowhere. Within the last couple months I bought a World Cup Soccer that I really shouldn't have as it put me over the game room limit for pins. Then this pops up 10 minutes from my house at a steal of a deal. I've wanted an Iron Maiden but honestly didn't think it was going to happen for a while since the prices as so high still, so I couldn't resist the price and pass up this opportunity. WCS is out and Maiden in. Another quick and easy 48 hour buy and sell transaction involving 4 people that didn't require either of us advertising our games for sale anywhere or dealing with tire kickers and low ballers. All transactions should be like that. Love it.
[quoted image]

Good stuff. Where'd WCS go? I'm loving mine. Kid approved!

Quoted from LesManley:

It went to another local pinsider so it's in a good home. Actually, it's still in my garage right now since things moved so fast in the deals, but I am helping him move it Friday.
I love WCS too. It has something for novice, casual and advanced players. I was excited to get another one, it's the only game I've ever bought twice, but something had to go for Maiden and it was low man on the totem pole.

I like your summary. It really does offer something for all different skill sets. I will hopefully have mine a very long time.

Not so much a pickup post as an updated lineup pic but whatever. Dragged Black Knight 2000 upstairs (heading off to West Virginia) and dragged World Cup Soccer downstairs.

Still need to drag Af-Tor upstairs (heading to Louisville) and go pick up the space shuttle I'm buying in Saint Louis so it can come downstairs and finish off my lineup for the foreseeable future (EBD, Meteor, Alien Poker, WSC94, Space Shuttle).

I'm tired. My back hurts. I need better basement stairs. Lmao

The Tacoma has been great to us, for sure.

I'm not looking forward to fighting this high speed. It's very grumpy lol

Won't hold settings for some reason. I've tried a slew of different batteries, all of which should be good.

And my P2 and P4 displays won't work no matter what I do.

The good things: it seems to play fine, with the caveats above. One of the pops isn't registering all the way around and needs some adjustment, or maybe just repositioning on the spoon. The glass is minty and the cab is pretty damn nice. The PF is kinda ugly but not atypical for high speed I don't think. It's 'good enough' until the hardtop gets here.

I suppose I'll send all the boards off to be gone through and bulletproofed ($200) and I'll figure out what to do with the displays. Hopefully I can keep it under $1500 with all the work done to it. That'd be nice.

Quoted from dothedoo:

Don’t rush off and send your boards out yet. We can probably fix it cheaper. Displays are most likely outgassed.

Fix it bill fix it!

Heh, I don't think it necessarily needs boards rebuilt but it never hurts.

It does let me work through settings and then play fine.. Just won't save them once I turn it off. Bleh.

I'm still not home yet (crashing at a friend's house), but picked up this beautiful wishlist item today in Colorado. Drove from Topeka to get it..

My truck might be a bit too long for his garage lol.

Today was drive-home day with my new space shuttle. First, fog (and light condensation, of course) hit and I freaked. Pulled over and put the tarp down. Proceeded to fight that stupid thing the entire drive home. Then at one point my tonneau cover snapped (POS). Then it started pouring... 15 minutes from home. Somehow it was still bone dry and started up without a hitch in my garage. Glad I'm home now.

No new machines this weekend but I did make a three hour (round trip) drive to grab a bronze lock bar/rails/legs set for my world cup 94, along with a slew of parts I really didn't need lol. Rails will take me a bit longer to install but the legs and lock bar look fantastic. Still need to order the rest of the trim pieces and whatnot to finish completely bronzing it out. I opted to use the chrome legs from WSC94 on my high speed since it had nasty non-original/spray painted legs to begin with.

I'm probably out of the machine buying game for a bit unless a deal I just can't refuse pops up. I like the lineup I've built (Eight Ball Deluxe, Meteor, Space Shuttle, World Cup Soccer 94, High Speed).... For now..

Not really a 'bring home' kind of deal but my previous pickup FINALLY made the trip downstairs to join the row. My friend drove up from Texas to make my alien poker his first pin, so he helped me take Space Shuttle downstairs while we were at it.

Feeling like this will be my lineup for a while going forward (especially since I cleaned out my lead with the meteor/EBD/BK2K/High Speed pick), unless something crazy pops up I guess. Still need to hardtop High Speed (working on it) and EBD later this year/early next. I've got enough to keep me busy for a while.

Quoted from Tbpilot78:

Great lineup man

Thanks! It helps when you get a jumpstart like I did from someone who had great taste AND is selling off cheap. My last two purchases (WCS94, SS) were basically full-blown retail (also both 8-11 hours away) but they were both very very high on my list. Now I've got a lot of work ahead to get EBD and High Speed up to par!

#13734 4 years ago

I've got some bronze stuff from Mike on my WCS94. It's gorgeous stuff. Now I need to sack up and buy the rest of the pieces to finish it off.

Don't think I can do the coin door (for this game, at least)--it's just too gaudy for it, in bronze. Going to go with this texture again, like I did with my MVS on all the metal parts. The chrome door looks great on Lebowski!

Super nice score, again. Totally jealous!

Had my friend pop over and pick this up for me in Iowa. It's making the trek home on Sunday before the super bowl.

Cab isn't the prettiest but I was told it's pretty clean otherwise (and plays well). I couldn't say no to the price because it was a title I was after.

Pretty excited to get it in the row where eight ball deluxe was (it's heading south on Saturday to get hardtopped)!

These followed me home the other day because I couldn't turn down the price. Hadn't planned on keeping either but neither worked properly when I showed up so now I need to put in some time and effort fixing the monitors (vertical/horizontal collapse).. And dad wants the asteroids. Both are early serial numbers/HUO w/ documentation. The Asteroids has owl face coin door which is interesting.

I certainly needed more projects.. lol

Traded my World of Nintendo sign for a T2. It hurt a bit to do it, and T2 wasn't exactly atop my want list, but value vs value there just wasn't any way I could turn it down. I'm not looking forward to dragging this heavy B downstairs...

From a pure value standpoint it's usually a $1200-1400 sign. Covid craziness has made all sorts of things go sky high though. That said, I paid $100 for it.

There are plenty of tables I'd have preferred over T2 for the trade but it'll be enjoyable enough I think. At least for now.

Terrible photos, but I came home with these 4 over the last two days! There’s not much room on the garage to move stuff around now.

Shit...I don’t think I could say no to any DMD game for $900. Well, maybe Street Fighter.

There are plenty I wouldn't want to KEEP for $900 but I know I could turn every single one of them for profit in order to build toward something I DID want. That's about the only way I can afford most pins anymore.

We got nearly drowned yesterday on our way in to Chicago. Seems every time I drive in to/through Illinois I am met with the storm of the century. This time I had spots where I could barely see the road and low spots where water was nearly up to the bottom of the truck doors. Wild.

#16465 3 years ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

Nope, just careful with the play money. Two or three will be for sale, just wanted the DE titles. Next Gen was really fun so might stick around

I hear ya. I just went over 10K on the 8 I now own and I'm a bit queasy from that. But I like where the lineup has gone:

T2
World Cup Soccer 94
Space Shuttle (hardtopped)
High Speed (hardtopped)
Eight Ball Deluxe (being hardtopped)
Cactus Jack's
Meteor
F-14

Not quite the star power some people have but not bad for 10K and 1.5 years in the hobby IMO. I've gone through 14 total machines, wheeling and dealing those I've sold along the way with hopes of rolling into something else.

Still, my picks these days are usually much narrower and mostly near retail or thereabouts. No crazy scoops of late!

Safe travels!

#16477 3 years ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

Oh I blew past the 10K mark sometime ago, lol!
There has been a lot of wheeling and dealing though and I do most of my own repair work which helps. When you get a good deal you just have to run, what can I say? There has been very few if any "splurge" purchases that I regret later. Money in the bank or pins you can play? As long as you are not in debt and paying interest, sinking a little money in pins which you can roll over later without taking a haircut isn't a bad thing. It took me a while but I view them as rentals that sometimes you actually make a few bucks on, I really love the restoration process the best though.
P.S. Really took a shine to early Williams with Blackout, Space Shuttle is on my radar to have a go at one of these days! Good Hunting!

I'm still small-timing it lol. Wife doesn't complain too much about it.. For now.

Good luck to you also! Lots of shuttles out there! My friend loves blackout, and it just got a hardtop made for it.

That’s not a bad line up at all. Nice.

It matches my skill set fairly well -- mostly pretty simple, not overly complex kinds of games. New(er) games are very frustrating to me.

Not a pin and not something I intend to keep, but I picked this up in hopes that I can turn this plus two of my pins (F-14 and meteor) into a nice DMD. Trying to consolidate but simultaneously get more games that will get played by my kids/friends. Meteor and F-14 aren't seeing a lot of play time unfortunately so they get to be the sacrificial lambs.

Hopefully not jumping the gun, I know it's a no-no to even say a word until the deal is done, but I'm pretty sure this one is safe.

Picking up tomorrow, says it doesn't work. No idea why, probably won't even consider turning it on there. Could be a mess, but everything else I see looks great.

I was hoping to clear off my Meteor/F-14/DkJr and pick up a newer DMD but I guess that's dead after this. Whoops.

Nice pick up. I miss my old Taxi.

Yeah, definitely a good laugh out of that. But I was nice and tried to be helpful, not figuring it would amount to anything for me personally, and then I got my chance.

As suspected, the batteries were SUPER old and a giant mess. A quick scraping (this won't be my permanent solution, it was just to quickly test) got it to boot and actually hold settings.

Out of the blue I was contacted this morning about an awesome pin for an awesome price. I drove 4 hours round trip without seeing pics first. And I’m still super ecstatic. The seller was a great person, who explained that after having it folded up in her basement for ten years (And the level of dust on it fully supports this), she just wanted it gone and was happy to get the space back. It's getting tougher and tougher figuring out what leaves in order to bring in new blood.. It's like selling off my children!

#17343 3 years ago
Quoted from guitarded:

No sir. This one is a local Montana machine that popped up outta nowhere.

Thanks.
Playfield is a little rough and it will need a little board (Skate Bank Solenoid Locks on Reset) and typical connector work. But the Glass is fantastic and the Cab is passing fair.
Your lineup is not lacking for much!

Sounds like typical old Bally stuff. My EBD was rigged six ways to Sunday. I was just going to sell it because I didn't want to fix / hardtop it (even though I love it) when my friend offered to do it for me. Couldn't accept that offer fast enough.

I'm a little sad over some of what's left along the way: Allen Poker, a super clean Af-Tor, Meteor, and even Black Knight 2000 (super repetitive game but AWESOME everything else) but that's just how it goes when you're limited both on funds AND space.

I don't have any "top 25" kind of stuff or super modern pins but I'm pretty pleased with how it's all come together.

Quoted from Ceckitti:

I’m just curious, were you worried about the weight on those stairs? Or did you not have any help getting it up and did it that way to make it lighter to do solo?

It's a hard 90 degree turn and the landing is too small to accommodate the size of the cab+head. We've moved some down intact (BK2K was less than fun) but now that I've gotten used to WPC wiring I find it far easier to just take things apart to make the move, then reassemble. Added bonus since I can then do the entire move myself.

If I want to take something down intact, we have to pivot the cab 90 degrees from the 2nd or 3rd step from the bottom and that forces us to put the machine into really weird angles where things could really go awry. Just not worth the potential problems imo.

#17830 3 years ago

Managed to get the Getaway downstairs without dying and/or destroying it. It was touch and go for a minute. I was convinced I was going to have all sorts of things to fix with everything that went wrong.

I do need to replace the plastic at the supercharger entrance now and something is strange about the threaded brackets for the leg bolts in the back.. But that's for another day.

Sweet Jesus I hope I'm done moving pins around for a bit, at least until my Eight Ball Deluxe hardtop is done!

Nice. Alien Poker is awesome...love the BG on that game. I see Cactus too...another fun one you don’t see often.

I wish the glass weren't so crappy on this AP. I mean, it's typical for the title but still. My playfield has some issues but I may touch it up and apply a protector. This was actually one of the first machines I ever bought (my first solid state) so I jumped at the opportunity to get it back.

Cactus Jacks has a pretty meh playfield which is a bummer but it plays nicely. Love the goofiness of it!

My only Christmas pinball item (at least thus far, but I'm pretty sure that will hold).. lol.

I'm still selling down (one more to go, pinbot is leaving in January I think) to get to 7 so I have an open slot. My high speed is coming home again soon, eight ball deluxe (post-hardtop) should be done soon, and then I'm going to look at buying something modern like Tron, Maiden, or something else. It's really hard for me to fathom spending $4-8k on one pin when I've budget shopped so much thus far... but I suppose it's probably about time..

But this was one of those kinds of deals you just don't turn down. They had an acdc pro right next to it that they sold for 3000... this wasn't that level of cheap but still..Couldn't say no. I don't think I can sell ebd after the hell it's put me through lol. Clear is done so I'm pretty close to being ready for the hardtop and reassembly. I hope... max is 8 (I'm at 7 once all the departing pins are gone) but I hope to stay at 7 for a bit. But my attention span is...short...so...

Quoted from Charlemagne1987:

Out with the old and in with the new. I think you made a good choice. Your collection sounds impressive.

Not as ridiculous as some but not bad for 2 years of collecting and only recently switching from opportunistic buyer (IE what pops up) to going and paying full on retail for what I want. It's easy to have gems when you can just flop cash down!

Quoted from Blake:

Three times a charm.
Owned the LE twice. Nice to have the full size back box/backglass. First generation cabinet is still the best IMO. But there’s no doubt the Mylar of the gen 3 has preserved the playfield nicely. And the hinged backglass is really handy. No water damage the the MDF sides although they are faded. New decals will be added for sure. Excited to get this up and running.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Nice pickup. I LOVE EBD -- such a great classic game. I'm working on an 81 EBD hardtop right now.

I'm partial to the 81 cabinet but the 84 lamp boards are so awesome. I ended up replacing *all* of the lamp sockets on my 81 because the originals are absolutely horrible.

Quoted from Blake:

Yea I'm pretty pumped to go through this one as its the cleanest PF that I have seen on a EBD. Backglass is mint too. There are certainly some benefits to the 84' machine. Have you made posts on your 81'?

Just on the main EBD thread. It's been... interesting/a total nightmare. I've got at least a few more days on the clearcoat curing in my garage. I still need to stencil the cab but my goal is to have it back like this in the next few months.

Not a pickup day for me, but finally meeting up to deliver the Cactus Jack's I have listed. Didn't want to sell but it was necessary to keep the metallica premium I picked up as well as the bksor premium that's arriving in a month or two. Gotta do what you gotta do, I guess!

CJ is a really fun game.

I'm sad to see it go but I had to make up the difference somehow in order to make bksor a reality. I intend to buy another CJ someday but I want a cherry one next time.

I have no idea how I'll feel about bksor when it's here as I've never even played the game but I miss my bk2k a ton (sold that to buy WCS, which I'm totally okay with as that's a forever keeper for me). I'm hoping I love that one when it's here but if not, I'll have a huge chip to use for something else. I'm tired. Lol

I know that feeling. I keep most of my money tied up in pins, so when I need cash for anything important I have to let something go. Many I regret selling, but I’m also so lucky to own any at all. Thanks for your post.

I'm pretty fickle sometimes so I have bought and sold a lot (25 total in two years, lmao yikes) since I started in this hobby in 2019. I've settled on a comfortable lineup of 7 and like you said..I feel lucky to have any at all, let alone some of the cool titles I've managed to get. I'm glad we have community support on pinside to share the experience. It might not be nearly as fun if I were limited to just my own small world in Topeka, KS.

You've got an impressive collection with some real gems!

Quoted from mtn-:

Did you get the pro or premium? Imo, the pro is by far the greatest, that small upper playfield only makes it slow.

It’s a premium. I know people are firmly in one camp or the other but I just can’t see playing a BK themed game WITHOUT some kind of upper playfield, even if it isn’t as well done as maybe it should be. JMO of course and I haven’t played either one.

Had a bit of an adventure yesterday with my most recent pickup. Decided it was time to finally drag it downstairs, but didn’t want to have to bother anyone to help. So... complete disassembly. I was both able to take it down these awful stairs solo *and* get it hooked back up correctly, so that’s good. Can’t believe just how much had to be unplugged in order to do this, though. Yeesh.

Quoted from RonSS:

I definitely would have bothered someone. Or rented a mover.
Good on you though!

Ha. Usually I do, and I think 3 people can comfortably bring one of these down intact, but on the heels of having my wife help drag Cactus Jack's (just the body with the playfield -- I separated the head and took it separately) upstairs without a dolly (bad idea) on Thursday I didn't want to have to ask for *any* help this time. I figured I could suffer through hooking it all back up, at least then the onus was on me and not on anyone else.

Quoted from woody76:

I had to swap playfields on a MET pro one time. The connections on that thing are unreal.

Right? I unplugged everything -- and I mean EVERYTHING -- as required in order to remove the head and then figured it would be easy to just pull the loom out and remove the playfield (heavy AF, at least compared to any I'd pulled prior!)....nope! Had to pull another 10 or so connections, including the damn interlock connectors. I don't think everything I had to disconnect actually ties in with the playfield (although maybe it does? I have no idea, I just know it hasn't been like that on Williams/Bally games I've taken apart), but it's certainly ziptied to the loom that has to go with the playfield when it comes out. Sheesh.

I'm not sure how I want to tackle BKSOR when it gets here. Thinking I don't want to disassemble it at all, though, so I'll probably just make sure I have enough help to drag it downstairs intact (Tron made it down intact with no issue). Not digging the way Stern sets things up with regard to separating components, lol.

#19798 3 years ago
Quoted from yzfguy:

BK will just have those minimal, tiny boards. I'd think that would be easy compared to MET.

If so, I might just take it apart too. It definitely makes the moving process suck less.

#19801 3 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

BK, like Munsters, is a Spike 2 system. The backbox is easy to remove. 2 or 3 RJ-45 type connectors, unbolt the back box pivot hinges, and remove the two anchor bolts and the back box is off. I can't imagine the play field would be any more difficult to remove.

Awesome! Really the PF isn't necessary to remove, but I just don't trust pushing against the cab with my body weight (with it just 'falling' down the stairs) so the only way I try taking things down solo is if it's completely in parts, with the playfield going down by itself. But really the head needs to come off for two people to comfortably take a game down. Head on requires 3 in order to guarantee nothing gets damaged as it goes down, just because of the logistical nightmare of the sharp 90 and the too-small landing. My wife is going to curse my name forever if I drop dead before I sell everything...lmao

Time for a new house

Hahahaha, or just stop moving pins around for a bit. Hopefully my HS coming home, Space Shuttle leaving, and BKSOR joining are the last moves I make for a while. I've moved 25 games up and down these stairs in two years, I think it's time to settle down and play for a bit.

Dirty, dirty $2 whore. She likes to travel....

I want the BK2K back that I sent off to West Virginia. Granted, he playfield swapped it, but still... That and the Af-Tor I sent to Louisville are the only two pins I've ever felt sad about selling. I furthered my collection by seeing them off, but both are missed. Maybe when I have an entire out building dedicated to dozens of pins...

I'm not big on colored GI in general but it seems more appropriate to do up top than down low (at least that seems to be the consensus I've found). Personally I get irritated when I can't see the ball, like..the entire time I'm playing. Delivery day for my buddy today. Driving 1.5 hours east to drop off what he bought from me a couple months ago (one of the necessary moves to facilitate my Metallica premium) and help him get a few of his other machines up and going: my old meteor (I miss her so much!), a '78 playboy, and a paragon..hopefully!

No machines came home with me today but I did pick up some powdercoated stuff. Not really sure what the hell I'm doing with three sets of WPC legs laying around (textured black, glossy jet black, stainless), seeing as I only have one WPC game (WCS) left and I'm in the process of bronzing it out, buuuuut I digress. I guess at least WPC legs look great on almost everything that I'd consider buying at this point.

I need to get my powder guy some Taxi and High Speed rails so I can finish those both off. Might strip down some coin doors for the next run, too. I love the splatter black texture.

I did get word that my Avengers Hulk LE will be making its way west, thankfully not in my truck, and a new toy will be coming back.. May 2nd. Can't wait!

Lol I figured the reaaaaly annoying game was LW3

OK OK OK OK OK OK OK I don't want to act like I think I'm 'too good' for a pin like LW3, it's just that in a collection of 7 like I have...I feel like the cutline is past something like LW3. Obviously if I could have more--10, 15, 20, etc--that dynamic would change. But yeah.

Tbh I don't hate the way it plays. The shots are kind of cool and I love the ramp. The sound is.... Very annoying. But the game isn't that bad. Making progress on shopping it out; it's suuuuuper dirty. I've got the ugliest part left before I'm done....

I've passed on half a dozen NICE LW3 lately....the collection is growing crazy fast, the SG and ID4 this week, FT and DH 2 weeks ago, been a WILD start to 2021, but I've owned a peschi screamer before lol

LW3 certainly doesn't seem to be hard to find at any given time. I'm almost done tearing this one apart (in sections -- didn't feel like doing a full teardown even though I probably should have), cleaning, LEDing, and reassembling. Should be able to have it wrapped up today other than the Pin2DMD which I need to collect and then install. Then I'll have one less project on my plate again and I can go back to hating the pops on my Eight Ball Deluxe

As much as I love finding stuff, I could probably go without for a bit, barring something just absolutely crazy. I do love posting on this thread when I find something great!

#20145 2 years ago
Quoted from Colsond3:

Does yours have an alternate translite?
LW3 is a good game and fun to play, especially assuming they have always been in the $1,200 - $1,600 range. I had a nice one before I picked up for 1100 or 1200. Call outs are annoying, but more than a decent bang for the buck. And definitely do better and last in a larger collection.
These days though, they are probably going for stupid money like every other game, so I wouldn't grab one now.

I dunno on the translite but it's stuck to the glass and, like....bubbly. So eh.

I think lw3 is a good DMD game for $1200-1700 which it most certainly USUALLY is (seemingly not with pinflation though), even with the super terrible callouts. I actually kinda like it...but no space means no keeping. I did at least make it nice (it was fillllllthy gross dirty, and the inside of the cab still is, for now) for the next guy. Now I wait for the PIN2DMD and decide if I want to powdercoat anything (primarily the gun). Eh.

Should be white/opaque. The controlled lighting was already LED (crappy flat top old style, but whatever) so I just left it. Color matched comet 2smd would have absolutely happened if I were keeping.

Quoted from wayout440:

Not too bad. I would highly recommend getting rid of the purple behind the backglass though.

They're blue bulbs behind the cops. They're a bit aggressive (pics look worse than in person) but the cops ARE blue on the glass, for whatever reason. I dunno, I like it. I love how my cherry red wireforms came out. Now I need to get the legs, lockbar, rails, etc all done to match.

Gotta fix a few things but it's in pretty nice condition...
[quoted image]

This is always one of the games where I completely don't understand the 'value'. I think it looks like a blast but pinside has it under $800. I suspect that number is completely wrong, especially in the current economy but likely always HAS been wrong (alien poker was the same way for quite a while). This game looks like a blast.

#20191 2 years ago
Quoted from rcbrown316:

I paid WAY more than 800 bucks for it. I only discovered this game about a month ago when I was searching for a list of classic sterns. It definitley has a unique presentation and what appears to be a a pretty deep rule set for 1981. it's tough to get a gauge on how many are around but it doesn't appear to be many and they don't come up for sale often from what I've seen. I'm guessing the value pinside has listed for it is based on lack of current sale information. This one is pretty well preserved and complete so I took a risk and offered a decent amount for it. If i like it I will do a full restore. If not it will still be in damn nice condition. I just have to hammer out a few issues, tweak up the mechanicals, polish up the metal and get some shorter legs on it. These are 30.5" and the thing is a monster the way it sits. Playefield doesnt really sit square in the cabinet in the play position. I'll figure that out after i put new legs on it. For those of you who havent seen it here is a decent video.

This would be one I couldn't give two sh1ts less what pinside says it's "worth". It looks like a fun game and I think you're right in that it just doesn't pop up for sale often. I think you got a winner!

She's a good pin for sure. The only issue(s) I continue fighting are the ramp switches. For some reason they've ALWAYS been a thorn in my side. It doesn't technically inhibit play that they don't quite trigger properly but it's frustrating when the ball isn't diverted off to a hideout like it's supposed to. Even more frustrating when you're escaping and that happens because you then have to make the ramp shot again!

I remember Steve saying he didn't really like HS all that much before I brought it down. By the time I took it back he was sad to see it go!

I mean, considering how old classic sterns are at this point and how smooth BOTH drop assemblies *and* spinners work (as long as they aren't gummed up/dirty/out of adjustment), I think we can file this comment directly under "sour grapes".

My only real complaint on classic sterns is the lack of any sort of coating on metal parts. The oxidization is super grody on my dainty little girl hands. Not a fan.

Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

Those games are awesome!!! Where do you order those? Looks like those awesome Japanese arcade games. My friend is looking for one of them for her place!

Under 1500 USD is a good price. There are TONS of spare super-sized high-def DMD spares for this game laying around. They seem unobtainium but they aren’t. Just requires some hard work to wrangle one. I LOVE the gameplay. It’s way better with friends, but if you challenge yourself it’s a lot of fun. It probably could use a code update so it has traditional scoring to improve home-use but I love novelty games like this. It is most certainly pinball, nay-sayers have not played it seriously. They probably put one game on it and dismiss it.

Many were parted out to make BBBs and get more money. They were hated games. DMD is not unobtainium, that’s nonsense as stated above. Capcom had stock out the wazoo when they closed up shop!
I appreciate the opto advice, I started having that issue after an adjustment for the arcade. Drop targets are original and really don’t break often. Dial down the flipper strength if you’re breaking them.

I can't stand soccer but I think it looks like a blast. Kinda like the wizard mode to one of my favorite games of all time (ironic, again, because I don't like soccer): World Cup Soccer!

No idea how it would hold up from a replayability standpoint but I think it looks fun for a bit anyway. They definitely used the HELL outta that gigantic screen and it looks great.

To me this Flipper football screams having the crew over and playing type of game.

I can definitely see how it might be more enjoyable with a group. I feel that way about space shuttle, which I almost HATE solo but think is a blast with a group.

Quoted from Colsond3:

I also posted this in the NE for sale thread, but thought I would post it here too so I could put up a few pics.
Anybody want this Disco Fever I picked up last weekend? I paid $350, and I grabbed it to maybe pull a few parts I needed for another game. I expected it to be a basket case.
But this thing may be HUO, it’s in great shape. Cab is excellent. BG does have some flaking, and PF has some minor swirls. But neither horrible by any stretch. Not a game I would want to take things out of though...so I could use the slot back.
I already cleaned and polished the legs, adjusted some switches and got the sound working. Displays are a little wonky at times, but it is fully working. Figured I’d offer it out instead of storing it.
I’ll pass it on for the same price, $350 to someone else if they want it.

I picked up my second FF last summer (had my first one from 2006 to 2012) and I can guarantee you that if you have some friends over, it will be THE highlight of the night. For solo playing in these COVID times: it practices your reflexes, but that's about it... pretty much ho-hum.

Don't want to burst your bubble, but the goal targets WILL break, regardless of the flipper strength... most of the type, it's the "slow" ball hits that get'er done. Speaking of which, need to find some targets... I'm out of spares...
Kick the F***** ball!!!

There are lots of games that just aren't all that fun for me without company. But I'm also not very good at pinball so there's that.

Do you put the pin on 2x4s to keep the rain from getting to the bottom of the pin?

No but the bed has ridges and it stayed dry. For as much rain as it SEEMED I went through, my tonneau-turned-tarp seemed to work really well. Probably helps that it was only an hour drive. Glad it's in my garage and out of any further harm's way though.

Hard to argue with vans as a pin hauler!

#20567 2 years ago
Quoted from JohnnyPinball007:

If you really like your pickup truck, and only wanting a SUV to keep pins dry, consider just buying a enclosed trailer to tow.
The only insurance I pay on my trailer is 9 bucks every 6 months in case of theft, and the tag for it costs like 12 bucks a year. (it is a 5x10).
I love trailers, because they save a lot on insurance costs, and maintenance costs.
My trailer has a camping toilet in it, in case I am stuck behind a wreck somewhere for hours, another plus of a enclosed trailer.
I just wanted to give everyone something else to think about. A enclosed trailer may can save you a whole lot of money for more pins.

Technically the Tacoma is my wife's The trailer idea is a decent one although aren't enclosed trailers kinda expensive? She already gave the heart-filled 'NO' on a camper shell

I drive a Camry and taking my 98 F150 for any sort of pin pickup sounds...dreadful with the cost of gas these days. Tbh I kinda hope I'm ready to lay back and relax for a bit. BKSOR makes pin #27 since late January 2019 when I started collecting pins, with the goal of getting basically where I am now. I'm tired, but pleased with the collection.

#20570 2 years ago
Quoted from JohnnyPinball007:

I just looked at my local craigslist, and there is a 5x8 in good shape for $850.00.
The main savings is not having to pay insurance on another vehicle.

Yeah $850 isn't bad. My son is getting this Camry in a few years, so when I said 'next vehicle' I meant whatever it is I buy for myself to replace it. By then the Tacoma will be paid off, might as well stick with Toyota and buy an SUV of some sort But then again, I really kinda hope I'm done buying and selling pins for a bit. I'm maxed on the row (7) and I don't think I could put any of them on the chopping block at the moment, other than for some insane offer I couldn't turn down. Kinda makes for a weird situation where I'm looking at storing them places besides my own home, lol.

Quoted from Mathazar:

I've long thought about the trailer idea but I'd have no place to store it, unfortunately. Our HOA prohibits trailer storage in driveways and my garage space is filled with vehicles. Thought about renting space at a local storage facility to park it, but aside from the hassle of picking it up and dropping it off each time I want to use it the cost for parking it is $65/month!
So far I'm doing ok with my pick up truck and hard tonneau cover. Most of what I haul around are classic Bally and Williams solid states, and I can fit two cabinets in the back with the cover down, locked, and dry with the heads put in the back of the cab (Crew 4-door). If I'm moving a DMD or later Stern around and don't want to deal taking the head off, it's gotta be a sunny day with the tonneau cover tied/secured in the open position.

Yikes! No HOA here but there's already a lot of crap in my driveway.. Lol

In retrospect I could have easily pulled the head on this bksor (I'm doing it right now anyway). Good to know it's super easy on modern games (or at least on THIS modern game!) should the need to transport ever pop up again in the future. At least the wadded up TonneauTarp (TM) served its purpose yesterday!

So I went back to the estate sale, reluctantly, planning on dragging the Mouse Haus edition Odds and Evens pinball back home, only to find out that it sold on the second day... for $90. Yikes. Instead, I spent $450 on 10 totes of action figures (God help me), some misc crap for my kid and myself, and a lane cedar chest. I shoulda stayed home.

There's probably enough value here in flips to buy another pinball machine--certainly a better one than the one I went to go look at!!-- but I think my wife has this windfall earmarked for some concrete patio work in the backyard. eBay is your friend. I sort of went crazy when my boys were young. They were children when the Star Wars prequels came out (Phantom Menace, etc). I went overboard buying action figures. Those still-carded toys have made their money back and then some (even counting for inflation).

Yep, I'm working on inventory / pics / Mercari listing right now. This is something of a nuisance but is in my typical wheelhouse (video games, action figures) that got me the kind of funds I needed to start collecting pinball machines in 2019. At least they came with totes so all I have to do is list them, put them back in the totes, and wait for them to sell. I can store 10 totes in my basement while they take their time moving out.

I was convinced this was going to fall through but it all worked out great. Left flipper wasn't working but a new coil fixed it. Too bad we lost the feature lamps in the process. The rectifier board is hacked and looks like crap (not surprised) so we'll swap in an xpin and then see where we are on those feature lamps.

Ultimately it's going to become a Quicksilver someday because the cab is horribly painted and the backglass is crap. In the meantime I left it at a friend's so he can play it.

Random thoughts this morning from helping yesterday with the Galaxy acquisition... I told my friend I didn't have time to bring any EMs back to life (and I don't fix pop machines!) but that I would help him to clear space by selling off some of what he had spent gobs of money accumulating before he let me start guiding him--lol.

Gottlieb Skill Pool - two complete cabinets, three playfields, one brand new backglass and set of plastics (both cabs have complete set of pool balls)

Gottlieb Surf Side - complete, some flaking on BG but decent overall

Williams Doodle Bug custom painted Beetles retheme project - probably not worth much more than random parts/mechs and for a solid cabinet to do something else with -- IMO

Gottlieb Continental Cafe - complete, backglass okay but not great, would be a solid donor for a Woah Nellie build

Bally Dude Ranch bingo (head under the Surf Side in pic 4)

Some other bingo (head under the Surf Side in pic 4)

Pepsi vending machine - doesn't cool but I think he said it works otherwise

He's a bit overwhelmed and I'm not sure the best way to go about getting this all sold for him. Clearly he needs better pictures and it would be nice to have some sort of indication on overall (dys?) function of everything.. I just know he needs them gone and I need him with cash in hand for all the projects I'm going to be doing for him (lol). Any suggestions?

Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

Night Moves is the greatest cocktail game made! Congrats! It has a really awesome rule set for such a small game

Agreed -- I'm waiting on boards returning so I can fix another friend's machine up so I can finally play it again! Night Moves and Caribbean Cruise are *awesome* games..definitely a break from what most cocktail tables offer...which isn't much.

Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

Galaxy is a great game!! So sad people keep killing them! yes Quicksilver is amazing, but Galaxy is too!

I really don't like the idea of killing one game to make another, but given that this Galaxy has a TERRIBLE paint job, a shot backglass, and only a so-so playfield..it's a perfect candidate for such a conversion IMO. If it didn't need a new glass and cab repaint, at a minimum, or if the PF were really nice..I probably wouldn't consider it. We'll probably attempt to touch up the playfield, once stripped, to see if it can at least live on in some other application.

Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

Those Pepsi machines are terrible. I believe that model should weigh about 600+ pounds. Hate moving them.
They’re only worth like $200

Hahahaha yeah I agree. I think that's about what he paid, and I'm sure he'd be ecstatic to just get his money back out of it. Definitely a silly purchase IMO, just buy a damn mini fridge -- or a real fridge -- and call it a day!

#21154 2 years ago

I'm not against it happening (although I do cringe a bit seeing it done with Meteor which I simply love) because those rarer games deserve to be played as well, regardless of value, I just wouldn't personally do it to a game that isn't otherwise VERY flawed (ruined glass, bad cabinet, blown out playfield, etc). I wouldn't take a nice Meteor or Galaxy and convert it but I also wouldn't condemn anyone else for doing it. There are definitely multiple valid arguments--on both sides--on this whole thing as far as I'm concerned.

#21156 2 years ago
Quoted from ThatOneDude:

These days, there are enough options for aftermarket boards and such that you can literally start with a partially populated playfield and end up with a fully functional game. With things like APC + LISY, you can actually get the original rules working on games as well via pinmame. Just a thought before sacrificing machines to build new ones....

I'm not even sure what some of that is, but it sounds like a hell of a lot more work than taking a beat donor game built on the same platform and swapping out PF/roms to build a restored different game. JMO. I think there are enough ways to either reuse good parts in something else (lots of games out there need better parts!) for anything worth saving. I would assume most people who would do a conversion wouldn't just go out and beat usable parts (which aren't needed for the conversion) with a hammer. I know I wouldn't.

Lots of ways to skin this cat, should one care to do so..

#21158 2 years ago
Quoted from lowbeau67:

This might sound kind of dumb
but I think those quicksilvers and stargazers have no "Pinball Soul" that are made from the meteors and galaxies. They never were in an arcade bar or bowling alley as a quicksilver or stargazer . I love my early ss for their play and how cool to think of all the games played on it and all the places they have been.
Just my goofy way of looking
at things.
I'm currently refurbing a meteor now.

While it's neat to think about the history these machines have--where they've been, what they've seen, and what's been done to them--I'd argue that any restore, not just conversions, loses this "soul" the second they get restored. New playfields, new paint on the cabinet, new backglasses, etc..the act of restoring is simultaneously the act of undoing the historical elements, all the patina and imperfections. It's not necessarily a "bad" thing, it's just "a" thing. JMO, I'm certainly not saying this is factual information. Merely my take on it.

#21161 2 years ago
Quoted from ThatOneDude:

It definitely is. One of my projects right now is documenting the difficulty in doing just that(F-14 pf to fully playable game, with options for original and enhanced rules) with an APC board. I'm also working on repowering a Middle Earth with a cobrapin.
I fully admit that I have a problem.
But, I'm just pointing out that there are options for building games like this that don't take donor machines. Or at least, not complete machines.

Lots of ways to skin a cat for sure.

JMO but I would think most people who would want to do a Quicksilver or a Star Gazer wouldn't want to do it without the end product being desirable as an "original"/"complete" game (IE using original parts--cabinet, platform, whatever) because it's a lot of work to do this and should the need to sell ever present itself, they wouldn't want to be handcuffed to any sort of oddball configuration that would limit their ability to sell. Kinda the same argument with putting a hardtop on a machine (which I've now done twice -- I don't care).

Like I said, I don't really *love* the idea of converting a perfectly good game into something else, but if the game is already crap -- with a gross cabinet, shot backglass, bad playfield, etc... I think it's perfectly fair to consider conversion to a rare game vs. dumping money into a game that's not worth much once done. If one has to spend $1000 to restore a $1500 game but can spend $2000 to turn it into a $6000 game they may never get to play otherwise? Well, from a dollars and cents standpoint it seems like an easy decision to me.

Quoted from ThatOneDude:

EDIT:
It occurs to me that I was just back in Kansas last week. I should have pinged you to grab a beer.

Absolutely! I didn't get any of the pins from the warehouse haul, unfortunately. I was really hoping to snag a Meteor. But... my old Meteor is one of the aforementioned projects on my list (CPR playfield, cab repaint, etc) and it will circle back to me someday. So, no REAL need to go grab one now. Just gives me more incentive to go visit my friend and play his.

#21164 2 years ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

Agreed.
My restored Flash Gordon has far fewer OEM Bally parts in it than the Flash Gordon I'm building "from scratch"

I give all the props in the world to people who keep things original (original playfield, original plastics, original backglass, non-repainted cabinet, etc) and somehow churn out a really nice example..that's a hell of a challenge IMO. But at the end of the day is it better than a restored game with half of it being new production parts? Or a conversion? Or some other scenario? IMO it's all whatever you want it to be. As long as it's a working, playable pinball..it's pretty damn cool as far as I'm concerned.

Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

My apologies! I did NOT mean to start this war!
I agree that they did make a ton of them so it’s a fair point to use games that had large production numbers. I just worry eventually they’ll end up “rare” like loads of other old EMs and early solid state titles that people used to think sucked and would fit for parts. Remember that back when these were coming out Stern games were basically scoffed at. This whole Classic Stern craze is relatively new.
Good luck to all of your builds tho! I wish one of those cheap player Galaxy’s would come up near me!

Hahaha I don't think you started a war. Nothing wrong with some spirited conversation! I certainly can see the concern here but I would imagine the number of conversions that will actually take place (as noted above) is still going to be super low in the grand scheme of things. It's not an *easy* conversion to do. Hell I'm not even sure I'm really up to the task, but I'm damn well going to try.

I certainly didn't come from a background of classic Sterns but the more I play them, the more I love them. They're just so silky smooth when they're set up correctly and well maintained. I think it's great that other people are coming along for the ride as well. They deserve to be loved!

Quoted from Methos:

True, but they can be cleaned and brought back to a much better starting point (never as when it left the floor), but much closer than a Frankenstein machine that uses reproduction parts from top to bottom.
It's like building a "33 Hot Rod from Factor Five Racing. Is it a real 1933 Ford? No. It's a new car built to stay as traditional as possible.

I think your summarization of a restored (new playfield, etc) machine as being "Frankenstein" is kinda laughable, but whatever boats your float lol.

Does bringing your entire collection up from a crummy unfinished basement and into a gigantic finished (walkout!) 27x19 basement qualify for this thread?! We moved last weekend--loving the new house! My Eight Ball Deluxe didn't fare so well from the move (my freshly powdercoated rails were gouged badly when the backglass came loose from the channel but THANKFULLY the glass didn't crack) so it got moved to the new pinball shop. It needs to be finished anyway before it gets added to the row.

Looks great! Super jealous of that expansive shop space
with insulation and nice 220 heater. Great pics.

I've got a lot on my plate right now (still dragging crap over from the old house, close date 10/29 and I wanted to have a garage sale with things I didn't want to bring, surgery 11/1+recovery after)..might put me at 2022 before I can really dig into any projects or get back to my poor EBD, but man I'm excited to use that big shop space. I've had to work around all my pins in a cramped space with no light in my dank unfinished basement for so long that I almost can't fathom what it'll be like to have both space *and* light to work! The shop seems pretty decently insulated from what I can tell but we'll see if I need to do some more work or not. I definitely need to at least do something to cover the insulation as it exists now.

Still need to drag over my SkyPilot rotisserie and the Stars playfield that's sitting on it but I managed to get all my other pinball supplies (toolbox, bulb box, craft organizer filled with rubber/targets/matrix lights/etc) over yesterday. Little by little, I'll get it.

As for the row, the neighbor kids came over and experienced some pinball (I'm pretty sure for the first time). They seemed to have enjoyed themselves. Hopefully this is the start to a couple of new hobbyists! Big ups to my kid for picking the most frustrating damn game in the bunch to play... lol

These landed in my shop today. Projects for a friend of mine. Not sure I'll be able to do much with the Surf Side for him (bummer, as the game looks super fun) but I'm pretty sure the two Mata Haris are getting hardtops. I feel a lot more comfortable with those projects, even if they're starting out as basketcases..

Had my buddy bring me a couple new toys to play around with and sent him with my BKSOR as collateral for the time being.

Cats is pretty rough, but plays. It will need a full shop job and a new set of plastics..the cab will need some attention with stencils, but that'll be much later.

Slugfest seems to work fine from what I can tell although it does have a credit dot. No idea if Slugfest will be a forever keeper, this is my first trial with a pitch and bat. We'll see what the kids think.

Quoted from grantopia:

If you have the space, SlugFest is alot of fun, especially with kids if the card dispenser works. It gets alot of play when I have people over or when there are kids down there. Admittedly it's not the best one player experience but if you have a spot you don't mind it taking up I love mine.

Yeah, I'm hoping the kids love it. I cleared one space (BKSOR) to fit both of these, although Bad Cats absolutely needs stripped down and fully shopped at a minimum (it's FILTHY) so I could have gotten away with keeping BKSOR around a bit longer... oh well. I'm looking forward to seeing how the kids feel about it.

Quoted from the96stang:

Check that serial number on that bad cats. I'd bet its a Prototype. Some of the colors seem off.

Doesn't seem to be anything special here besides all matching boards (except for the power supply -- bummer). I think it's just *that* dirty lol

Quoted from grantopia:

I think the kids will, I love it too! I find non pinball people really gravitate towards it when we have people over. When I have pinball people over its great because you can play any number of innings, so there are alot of people that will play 1 to 3 inning games waiting to play their ball on a pin, or we've had real quick dollar tournaments. Anyway - my sales pitch is complete!

That's the general consensus I've heard on pitch and bats. As to whether it applies to my kids and their friends? Who knows. We'll know soon!

Quoted from SilverUnicorn:

Congrats on the pickups! I have a Bad Cats and would love a SlugFest as well. Enjoy them! They will go great with the rest of your lineup!
Chris

I've wanted a BC for a while now. Admittedly I wanted one a bit less......rough...and dirty...than this one, but I'm also horribly cheap and could not have even begun to be willing to pay the going rate for a super nice one. Slugfest has always been fairly intriguing to me, although I had never played it prior to the one test game I put on it yesterday.

I certainly wasn't looking to buy more pins right now as I just more than doubled my house payment (ouch), but when I was offered these for what I felt was a steal price in 2021, I decided it would be a good time to take the equity out of my BKSOR (well, when it sells) and grab two pins I've wanted. I know I'll miss BKSOR being in my lineup but I think these two pins + cash will help me lick my wounds a bit.

I'm trying to help my friend straighten up his bad situation after getting "taken" several times early on when he got into the hobby and was unfortunately very naive. He brought Galaxy (I actually pushed him to buy this ugly thing for CHEAP because someday I'm going to convert it to a QS) and two Doodle Bugs. One has been.....poorly half-rethemed. Not really sure what to do with it to be honest, I'm thinking it might be best served as parts to other projects at this point.. it's a mess.

My shop is starting to look like a damn homeless camp: two mata hari hardtops (in progress), a night moves with weird flipper coil overheating issues, my wife's Roy Clark that's been shopped out but still needs a drop target replaced, my buddy's LAH that I've gotten working except sound (waiting on new sound ROMs) and now these three. Sheesh.

We did get to play a few games on my newest additions before he left town: bad cats and LOTR. High praise from both of those which made me happy since I've done a lot of work on both.

Before you trash that galaxy, try it with the new code. It’s pretty cool.

I'll have to check it out. I'm a long way away from being anywhere near ready to take on a QS conversion but it's definitely something I want to do. This Galaxy is in pretty gross shape (bad backglass, hiiiiilariously painted cab, meh/average playfield) but I'll make it an okay player in my shop for a bit while I move through some of these other projects.

#22950 2 years ago
Quoted from koji:

Even without the update, Galaxy is a great game.

Yeah it'll be fun for a bit. I have a hell of a backlog to clear out before a QS swap is even remotely doable (also I've not purchased PF/glass/plastics/harnesses) before then, including my never-ending EBD hardtop from hell. Though, I'm getting closer and closer to just cutting my losses on that and moving on. Don't have to worry about projects if you just abandon them!

Technically it's not "here" yet but will be on Sunday. My friend picked it up for me the other day so it's in safe hands.

The distributor thought they'd stick it to me by charging me an extra $100 for the backglass "because it wasn't in the game" (it was on the floor 3' away) because "that's their policy" but that wasn't the real kicker... they yanked the displays/mpu/sound board out of it and didn't say a word about it, sticking to their full asking price. Ridiculous.

Nevertheless, I've got a working Galaxy to gut and make one fairly nice one out of (this playfield looks like it could be VERY nice under all that dust, potentially nice enough to touch up and clear even) so it will get done. Can't wait to get cleaning on it so I can really assess the playfield.

Wish you were closer, keeping eye out for early stern playfield to build a machine.

I plucked a mostly-populated Stars playfield out of a friend's attic for the second 3-bank I'll need for my Quicksilver build. I still need to come up with some more spinners!

It's looking like I'll have a Galaxy PF and a Stars PF hanging in my shop at the end of all of this. Maybe I can find something more to do with them, but I'm not sure. They'll look okay next to the Mata Hari extra playfield I got from my two basketcases I suppose!

Quoted from Da-Shaker:

I can’t believe they would remove the back glass and boards, then want to charge you more. That’s insane.

Yeah, I definitely got worked over, in multiple ways. Charging more for the glass was insulting enough but then finding out they had pillaged boards and displays too...ouch.

Whatever, it's out now and I get to rescue it from its life of sitting!

Quoted from gdonovan:

Oh I'm not looking to strip, I'd like to bring that Galaxy back to life for my Bally/Stern cabinet. If you are going to strip it and wish to part with it LMK, I think I have enough parts to reassemble.

Yeah, that's what I'm going to do with this new one. Cab and glass are okay and the playfield looks great. So I'll rob boards and displays from the reeeeeeally bad (albeit functional) Galaxy cabinet currently in my shop with the intention leaving the one really bad cabinet empty so I can start stripping it down and painting it for the Quicksilver build. The playfield currently inside that cab will have to give up its drop bank along with several other parts that I'll need.

What I got from the warehouse is about the minimum I could have gotten in order to build a Galaxy while still having my Quicksilver cabinet, but I think the resulting Galaxy should come out pretty nice.

Made a quick jaunt to Nebraska to meet up with my buddy Bill for a playfield he picked up at TPF that I wasn't able to arrange before he passed through Kansas. Got to play his awesome Quicksilver and confirmed just how much I want to build one.

My real pickup post comes Monday after I load up the trailer and head to Oklahoma. The 35mpg i got driving the hybrid to Nebraska felt a lot better than the 8mpg I'm about to get en route to Oklahoma on Monday

What was the older Williams game you picked up for him?

My friend brought me a working Doodle Bug and a pretty bad half-finished retheme a couple months ago. But I'm NOT an EM guy, at all...I lined up a trade for a solid state game I feel far more comfortable working on. That trade happens Monday.

I'm definitely not an EM guy but more than anything else I'm trying to help a friend out by clearing up some of his early buying mistakes (IE busted machines he can't fix). Feeding me SS games I can actually fix rather than EMs which I can't/don't want to fix definitely makes it easier on me.

Sounds like my other friend who's getting the bugs wants to make them aggressive tournament machines so they'll work well for that purpose. Win-win-win.

Quoted from gdonovan:

I am slowing down now that I figured out what I like.

I've definitely done a bunch of moving in and out over the 3 years I've been doing this (pretty sure I'm still in the 30s though) but 100 pins...my God

I've got room for 8 in my main row (my Slugfest flies solo in a corner across the room, it looks super goofy next to the pins anyway).

I spent today breaking down BK2K and Bad Cats and bringing them into my garage, ready to deliver 2.5 hours south in a week. Taxi slid back in (from storage) temporarily, but it's eventually going to my friend's. I'm hoping to replace it with a TNA 2.0 and ideally... I'm hoping my row stays configured that way for a good while. Gorgar and Mata Hari, plus a long term Galaxy->Quicksilver conversion are hanging out in my shop, but I only intend on keeping QS, and I'll have to scrape the row again if/when that actually comes together.

I still haven't figured out "what I like", per se. It kind of varies I guess. I like to have variety and with space for only 8 it makes it a bit of a challenge.

Quoted from SilverUnicorn:

2 titles I wish I still had.
Chris

I hate to say it but I won't miss bk2k. This is my second one and it just didn't click with me like I had hoped. Sucks, there's a lot going for it..but also a lot going against it IMO.

Taxi is obviously a classic. It's going to a friend who will keep it safely tucked away. I don't want her leaving my life for good.

I've gone in waves of being super heavy on Sys11 in my row (at some points more than half the row) and kind of cycled down to where I'm actually going to be extremely thin (1 of 8 once taxi leaves -- I refuse to sell my high speed) but I suppose that's not terribly atypical. Seems Sys11 is pretty standard early collecting for most new hobbyists. Makes sense, they're great for what they are.

#24265 1 year ago

Haha, nothing wrong with any of these approaches. I let things come to me for a bit and fixed/traded up as I could. Got lucky to have one of my very earliest scores be an Eight Ball Deluxe, Bk2k, and Meteor for 2000 followed by her high speed for 800. That gave me a real springboard to all kinds of other things. My purposefully-bought, for basically retail (at the time) pins were World Cup Soccer, then Metallica, then Tron. Most other things I have are situational sorts of dealings that were good deals or mutually beneficial trades, etc.

I'm definitely lacking "new" tech (can't afford it) representation but that's okay. Even with crazy prices out there I just can't see dumping LOTR, Tron, or Metallica to fund something else. And with the market as dry as it is around here these days, I consider my row fairly settled, at least for the time being.

Hard to argue against the value of system 11 games though. There's just enough going on with them for them to warrant long-time keeper status. Great games!

Oh man, great scoop. Stars is on my list.

Are you planning on trying the code updates on those? Galaxy transforms into a GREAT game (sorry, I think it's booooooooooring stock) with the 2021 code!

It is a fun game. My friend picked one up and found a repro backglass at Expo, so he'll probably restore the game. I'll have to take you over there to play it next time you're in town.

Nice! I need to come play QS again, I'm having withdrawals.

No fun pickups for me, but today is finally delivery day for bad cats and black knight 2000, 2 hours south. My bank account will appreciate the driving. My ultimate goal is still a TNA 2.0 when they post

Not sure if I'm buying this myself (I want to, lol) or just shopping it and helping a friend sell it but this showed up yesterday. Looks like a really good candidate for a restoration!

I'm not really sure this counts but I picked up a whole slew of cocktail stuff (7 complete games plus extra glasses and playfields--and still left one behind) from a friend who has moved from Kansas to Arizona/Vegas. I only unloaded the truck, opting to just park the trailer in the shop to deal with later. I'm tired.

Most all of these will just be shopped and sold I believe, along with his f14 which I've already finished shopping. Just trying to be helpful where I can be, I guess.

Worked too fast to grab an in progress picture. I needed to make a quick run and be home to get the kids in bed. Luckily I found a new friend to help me speed unload and setup this JP pro I added tonight. Did I buy the van for the family or for me to haul pins? Hmm...
[quoted image][quoted image]

Just bought a cheap 07 Rav4 with pin hauling in mind. I figured having something with a closed cab would be nice when I didn't want to hook up the trailer and I was worried about hauling with the truck.

Nice grab!

My favorite thread to post in.
Three years to the day my buddy Matt started lending me games to shop out for him. Two weeks back he mentioned that a guy wanted to sell back a F14 he sold him earlier this year and asked if I wanted it. Hell yes I said. A call out of the blue yesterday led me to Saskatoon today and I'm so pumped to be back into pinball ownership with one of my all time favorite games
[quoted image]

Such a great game. If things go right I'll be F-14less again tomorrow (in a perfect world I'd be able to keep it!) For a second time. It's easily one of my favorite system 11 games. Nice pickup!

Your mylar looks perfect, as do your inserts, and you don't appear to even have any discoloration outside the mylar. That's incredible.

This makes 4 gameplan cocktails in the shop... lol. Two now work. Still a lot of work ahead. These are my friend's (Roy is mine) and all are likely to be sold when I'm finished.

Took delivery yesterday of an American Girl pinball I had won in a year-long bet with a friend, as well as a swapped AFM playfield from another friend. I'm in the process of scrubbing it as clean as possible (before I polish it with the DA). Eventually I plan on building it into a coffee table with lights behind the inserts.

She hasn't touched her AG in months. Big interested today with a second one here :eyeroll:

#25642 1 year ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

You will have half of pinside coming down on you for making a coffee table. They will think you are depriving someone of a playing pinball machine.

Seems likely. But this one is definitely an old, beat, faded AFM. A brand new Mirco is getting swapped in and this tired old PF can live on for some other purpose.

#25647 1 year ago
Quoted from waymon:

I just didn't make a post about the one I did. I shared mine with you on the Facebook machine. I learned my lesson when I posted about hanging a Star Race playfield on the wall. What will be really bad is when I sand down some really old and beat up playfields and hang them as bare wood!

Man I'm about to come to TN and steal that Stars table. I love it so much

Crappy old playfields are never going to be swapped back into anything, it just wouldn't make any sense to spend the time doing it. Thus, at that point they're only left with one purpose: art. People getting butthurt about it need to just let it go.

#25653 1 year ago
Quoted from ThatOneDude:

I see worn out playfields and get the itch to turn them into homebrew mashup games. Turn that beast into a weird coffee table cocktail pin with Mars Attacks sound bites.
I did manage to pick up a "crappy" Scared Stiff pf left over from someone's playfield swap. I was going to use it for art, but when I picked it up, it just had the normal wear around the holes that will get covered up by cliffys, so it's getting swapped right back into my Scared Stiff. It was quite a score!

Building a complete homebrew game sounds like a complete nightmare to me, tbh. I've got 9 cocktails, two hardtops (Mata Hari), and a Gorgar all needing attention in my shop as it is. Drowning in projects that belong to friends. At least I can see light at the end of the tunnel on many of those. Can't wait to try out the new Gameplan MPU that's supposed to arrive today -- those are 4 of the cocktails I'm working with!

It's certainly possible to come across a B+ playfield that someone swapped out, for whatever reason, and that might be perfectly fine to just throw back into a game (I'd probably opt for touchup/reclear at a minimum, if I'm going through the effort of a swap, but that's just me) but this AFM definitely wasn't that. It'll look great inset into a table or on a wall..but that's about it.

It does happen.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

I followed that one closely. I admire your skill, it's far better than mine. lol.

It's hard for me to find more than a few minutes at a time to work on things, too. Makes it incredibly difficult to accomplish all that much.

#25659 1 year ago
Quoted from ThatOneDude:

I hear that. But I just gotta scratch the itch
There's a homebrew based on a Demo Man about 5 feet in front of me, one that is getting art next week in the garage, and 3 more in storage waiting a spot. None of those are counting the playfield swap I'm doing on Scared Stiff!

Mad respect to those who can really innovate with this hobby. I'm lucky if I can just get things playing and keep them that way lol.

I'm pretty good at the "sweat equity" types of tasks though, like scrubbing and polishing playfields. You know, the brain dead tasks literally anyone can do
