Pinball was meant to be 10 balls.

I knew there must be a reason you can set JP2 to 10 balls!

3 ball or 5 ball, I suck either way...

#19353 3 years ago
Quoted from Skyemont:

I invented that. It’s my lifesaver. You put it in the back so it lifts the pinball up to take the legs off. No chair or person needed.

A slightly more portable version.

Some of my games are 3, some 5. Depends on difficulty. And some games have carry over progressive stuff. Which 5 ball games help.

Apollo 13 was meant to be 13 ball!
Most of mine are 5 ball. I have lots of time to play pinball.

i am not skilled enough to do 3 balls i need 5 at my skill level to enjoy these fast new games

Quoted from alexanr1:

The only reason games were set to three ball was so operators could make more money.

This is 100% NOT correct. I

I didn’t mean to start a three ball vs five ball debate. I’ve just never seen a modern game set to five ball before. Do what you want y’all!!!

Do tell!

Growing up I remember all games were 5-ball. Only once we started seeing modern SS and the rise of video games with 3 lives do I remember dropping to 3-balls. I can see 3 balls in order to shorten games and get more revenue. What other 3 reasons are you thinking of?

At home all my games are set to 3-balls. Obviously more difficult to accomplish things but what's the point of playing if you can beat it most of the time.

To prevent further derail...new topic created to continue arguing about how many balls you prefer.

No one really cares

#19366 3 years ago
Quoted from alexanr1:

You could think of three other reasons off the top of your head, but couldn’t type them in? LOL!

Here's 5:

1. Manufacturers factory defaults for EM games was always 5 ball, for SS games it was typically 3 ball. This is more of a gameplay/industry design standard, not an operator's standard. The industry changed in the late 70's and manufacturers strongly suggested 3 balls was a better setting because the "new" SS games focused more on skill and less on luck. Do you know many EM's with consistently long ball times?
2. Reduced wear on playfields.
3. Reduced the frequency that a game needs to be serviced or cleaned.
4. Shorten competition/tournament times.
5. Trying to be a better player. You can reduce game time while trying to still achieve the same goals/score.

To say it's the only reason is extremely shortsighted.

Nearly all operators these days are lovers of pinball and do whatever they can to get people to play more pinball. To suggest operators just cared about making more money by putting games on 3 balls is fairly silly. (#6) A lot of operators didn't even know how to change those settings in the 70's and 80's! They just left them the way there were when they turned the game on from the factory.

Regarding today's op's, two very good pinball friends of mine operate games and barely break even. Making money is typically not the first goal, it's typically getting new machines in rotation for patrons to experience.

Getting sick of people suggesting exactly the opposite of this. Pinball times have changed and old timer's pinball op standards are no longer profitable.
Also tired of people suggesting that a thread being derailed is the most important thing here. If you don't care and don't want to learn something about pinball, maybe you shouldn't be here.

If you are referring to me, “not caring”. What I don’t care about is reading arguments about trivial things. It seems there are a few pinsiders who get in more arguments than others. I saw this coming. Maybe some of us need to relax and take uneducated statements with a grain of salt. I have a passion for pinball, however I do not have a passion for drama. I wasn’t trying to be confrontational but was just wishing for a great peaceful place to share my love for pinball

No, this response was a general observance of recent Pinside banter, not directed at you. I understand what you are saying. Sometimes it's difficult to not care about the pinball. I come to Pinside to try to help people in the tech threads... sometimes it's hard to ingnore statements in "NON-tech" threads.

I find this statement implausible after being on the board for almost four years and in that time seen a plethora of various hacks designed to cheat a player out of his quarter quicker. The variety of ways in which operators have hacked machines has been truly amazing to behold. They didn't stop just because the machines went from EM to SS!

Trust me, they figured out very quickly how to change the ball settings and crank all the other settings to ghastly difficult.

Sorry for OT.

Are you suggesting an operator driven conspiracy made those actually building the machines make the change from 5 to 3?

Because 3 has been the default setting for quite some time.

Don’t try to reason with these folks, it’s useless. People believe whatever conspiracy regarding pinball history they think best fits their reality, it’s the new American way. 3 ball was default for SS. Had nothing to do with Ops.

EM's 5 ball was very common.

Most 60's EM pins will shake you down and steal your lunch money with impunity. Just brutal.

As one operator once stated; if you were playing longer than 3 minutes they were losing money.

I have timed game play on Bally 60's pins, if you break 3 minutes you are doing very well.

#19374 3 years ago

Just curious, but did the title of the thread change? I didn't know it changed to how many balls do you play with at one time

Rumor has it games went from a nickel a game to a quarter a game because:
1) manufacturers defaulted it as an industry standard not an operator standard
2) Two games for a quarter reduced wear on the coin mechanism
3) reduced the frequency of coin jams reducing servicing and cleaning
4) shortened time between games to start a new game. 2 plays per quarter was a faster second game.

To say raising the price of games was to make more money is really short sighted of people.

The seller pulled this beauty out of an abandoned house. Thankfully it wasn’t left in the basement under the collapsing walls even though a mouse did take advantage and set up a home inside. Hopefully the boards can be repaired. I was told it came with a manual and it did but it’s for Black Belt. On a positive note , it’s in better shape than all those Michael Jorden cards ruined by water damage, so Pinball machine 1, Michael Jorden cards 0.

5 for a dime

5 for a quarter

3 for a quarter.

But I could be over thinking it.

Not a pin but I'm pumped just picked this up for $248.00 bucks at a Home Buy store my sis works at in Norwood. It was a floor model display somewhere but it is pristine, hell still had the protective blue film on the moldings. Played so many damn games of Asteroids and Centipede my rear was sore from sitting all day! lol

Thanks, guys! I just opened it up and discovered a new power driver board as well. Sometimes it pays not to look! Waiting to get a new plug end before doing any testing because the ground prong broke off, but I may be hitting up gdonovan again for another buck unit if this thing is noisy too. Haven't really had a chance to get under the hood. Guy said $750 so I passed the cash and left.
