I picked up this Volley yesterday from a super nice older lady.

Very nice cosmetic condition and partially working.

I could tell that it was tough for her to let it go. She told me there were many great memories tied to it. Apparently it spent most of its life in her small kitchen where she was able to keep an eye on her kids and their friends as they played.

I let her know I would take good care of it.

I have a couple like that - been in the family a long time, happy it was going to someone who cares. A little more responsible as the caretaker, but a good feeling you are continuing their legacy too.

We have around 20 or so of them on the property like that.
If you go up the road about a mile they get really dense where it’s more hilly and it’s like a forest of them.

Gottlieb 80 series pins are harder to find today because the boards weren’t grounded and a lot of the pins were thrown away. I was at TPF three years ago and ran into the owner of the local arcade where I grew up in California.

I asked him what he did with all of his pins when he closed his arcade in 85. He said that he didn’t have room to store everything, so he put all of the difficult to maintain pins in the dumpster; all Ataris and all Gottlieb 80s except Haunted House and Black Hole. He kept a few Williams and all of the Bally pins.

It is interesting that he did not bother with trying to sell these pins. I guess the prices were so low they were not worth bothering with, perhaps ?

My Op friend said he bought a Meteor at a coin op auction for $5.00 and then scrapped it because the boards were bad. This was before Alltek started selling its boards.

Exactly, not worth the time and effort as parts to make them working again were not available, especially boards, just like your op friend found out with that Meteor. A local operator I know tells stories of panel trucks full of early SS Gottliebs being taken to the dump and thrown out of the back as well....

It's sad, because even then, replacing it was possible. It's not like people weren't designing systems. Hell, you could have pulled something together with the guts of a Timex-Sinclair or the like. It's not like the MPU design on these was earthshattering.

Was never really on my want list...but they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

Figure I’ll clean it up, led, and Titan it. Play it for a bit and then offer it up for a trade.

Plus now I can use some of the parts off the spare PF I have.

Nice pickup. Even if you just play it for a while and then move on, I think you will enjoy it. Monopoly has become one of my top favorite games, and I think its a bit underrated. Enjoy!

Back then there wasn’t much of a collector market. Operators would rather destroy a pin than sell it to a non operator. They didn’t want people to stay at home playing pins/vids rather than playing in location as that would hurt a fellow operator.

What? If you don't take this off of our hands it will go to the trash? That would be a no-refusal argument.

LoL...we were going to sell it at work. And they offered it to me first for a steal.

I believe it, but it is a shame.

#18338 3 years ago

I’m sure nowadays, if anyone saw a pin sitting on the side of the road ready to be dumped, it would get snatched up! I would for sure anyway

I think you are definitely right though. Pinball machines were seen as disposable back in the 80s. They were to run for 5 years then get tossed. Super sad

I wonder if any of those ops turned some of those worthless old pins into coffee tables

Sorry. I could not resist

I've finally got one of the machines that started my pinball fascination. I just love the sound of Firepower, it takes me back to where it all began.

She's a bit rough and needs some TLC, but man I'm stoked!! Even found a few coins kicking around in the bottom of the cabinet

I didn't actually bring it home as it was delivered by the great guy I bought it from. Had been trying to find an Indiana Jones for some time and finally got a good one. Sadly I had to sell my one of a kind Tee'd Off with custom colored DMD to make room, but I think this line up will work for my needs.

Guy called me to fix his Captain Fantastic, said it was totally dead. Thought maybe I could end up just getting the game off of him. Of course when I showed up, it was a home use version.

Why couldn’t it be a home use EK? Then at least I would have all 3 of these things.

When I explained what it was, he asked if I would just give him $50 to get it out of his house. I have one down in my basement somewhere that also needs repairs, so I figured what the hell.

I think I was more excited to pick up the SBM framed backglass along the way home.

Awesome BG. Couldn’t say no to that. Cord is damaged, so I’m replacing that right now.
