What is the white powder / dust seen in these pictures?

I recently pick up two rough project pins for relatively cheap and they both have it. They are early SS ('79 and '80) and likely haven't worked since around '84 based on the tax stickers.

I've seen the powder in pictures from other pins as well such as this one:

These pins were in non-climate controlled garage for at least the last 2 years and likely much longer. Is this dirt / pollen / cigarette smoke residue? Termite excrement (I see no obvious termite damage)? Metal corrosion (powder is concentrated at inserts not really metal)?

It vacuums off easily but I'd like to know what I'm dealing with and if I should be wearing a respirator.

Looks to be corrosion to me.

I don't know why I didn't think of that before now. I think you guys are right.

Luckily it seems dead, is easy to clean, and white mold is generally non-toxic from what I've read. Looks like I will wear the respirator while cleaning...

Specifically it is called "white mold" from mild dampness in the air and usually found on the walls in a cellar. Better explanation can be found on Google.
