I started going over a project machine I picked up and found this sitting inside the machine. I was wondering if anyone has any idea what it is? It looks like some kind of medical quackery device, but I can't tell if it is old or not.

Quoted from orangestorm87:

Giant flipper coil?

Must've come out of a really huge pinball machine!

Quoted from Darcy:

Does it have 'Marconi' any were on it? Or Westinghouse?

There are no markings on it. The little metal topped glass piece says merit detector stand on it. The thing is mounted on a piece of finished wood. All flathead screws.

Quoted from Jean-Luc-Picard:

Used to convert electromagneticwave energy into electrical current or voltage.

What would this have been used for?

...or even most of a home made radio.
If "Merit Detector" has a chunk of silvery rock inside it you can probably make it work.
google " crystal radio " and you should find some info.

Thanks. Mystery solved.
