What DPI is preferred for custom cabinet decals? Also, what is the standard image file format typically required for print shops and maximum file sizes? I'm sure things very a bit, but I'm trying to get a better understanding of the process and want to get it right the first time.

in graphic design the minimum is generally 300dpi

300dpi, CMYK, TIFF is basically the standard. File size will vary by operation and how they take delivery of files, but it's only going to be an issue with some place that isn't really set up to do what you're trying to do in the first place.

Honestly though, find a place that feels right, and then don't be scared to ask them questions. They'll know the best way to optimize things for the printing technology they have.

Good info. I already started at 600dpi in Gimp2 .xcf format and the file size is really starting to slow my computer up as it gets bigger. I'll focus on 300dpi going forward. I'll be able to convert to whatever format is necessary after that.

I'll be looking for someone with pinball cabinet decal printing capabilities soon. If anyone cares to PM me with what they have to offer and what format requirements they need would be awesome. I'm not a fan of the super shiny thin decals floating around lately.

    Thanks!

Brad Bowman at Bowman Signs is an awesome source for printing. Top notch.
