This is specifically for Outer Space, and it appears that the bracket was redesigned such that the subsequent Jack In The Box & Hot Shot don't have it (they use a screw). This bracket is the one that attaches the Player Up Unit to the backboard (about 4" long), and the spring locks the Player Up Unit in place (i.e., it would be free to rotate about the axis defined by the clips that the unit sits on top of).
