We're back!

After a disaster in our datacenter took down our server, we are now running Pinside on a brand new server. However, things may not work as expected as we are still polishing the playfield and adjusting some switches! We might be switching to maintenance mode a few times. I have something of an affinity for games that are mean and cruel. You know, games where you get that great first ball, and you just KNOW that you are going to be putting in your Grand Champion initials. Two balls later, the game has completely humbled you and smacked you around like the wimp in those old Charles Atlas ads.

My top two: Whirlwind and Iron Man. Both of these games can be so vindictive it's absurd. Love them both though!

I wouldn't want an entire collection of them, but gotta have at least one of these in the game room.

And Tron.

And every other game I suck at.

ACDC would top my list...

Xmen for me.

No initials or grand champion on it, and I'm not going to let anyone carve them in, but in my house it's Big Daddy. 1000 point games are rare.

AC/DC is king of the cheap drains....

A preorder

Hmm.... I can't believe no one said Bram Stockers Dracula yet, or The Shadow. My JM is playing evil too... maybe I just suck lol

#11 6 years ago

BSD is incredibly unforgiving!

#12 6 years ago

FT. After a year I still can't the factory default high score.

#13 6 years ago

Twilight Zone with the legs cranked high,
bally star trek, bally eight ball, ...early bally ss pins...

#14 6 years ago

Flash Gordon will kick your teeth in!

#15 6 years ago

5-ball games in 3 minutes, very common on my machine.

Also, I'm a crappy player.

That's why I needed that POTC.

Although I suck at that too.

#16 6 years ago

I agree with Whitlwind. Ugh.. Another brutal, yet fun game is Monday Night Football.

#17 6 years ago

Pinbot and F-14
Pinbot for those inevitable side drains before you ever get to touch the ball with a flipper
f-14 for the sheer speed of a dialed in game.

#18 6 years ago

Flash Gordon.

BSD. Without a doubt. So mean.

#22 6 years ago

Nahhh... early 80s Ballys were fairly easy to beat for the most part with a few exceptions. However, Bally 60s 2-inch flipper games - now some of those titles were flat out brutal to the player.

As far as 80s games - Firepower with that huge drain on the left kicked my butt. How about the Williams games with the banana flippers - wow were those brutal or what! Cant speak for 90s or later... don't have a desire to play them; I'm too old and tired.

Superman is also a brutal pin. 99% chance of side draining after any center targets are hit.

#24 6 years ago

F-14 at the highest pitch...unforgiving!

#25 6 years ago

F 14 all the way !

#26 6 years ago

WOZ, BSD, and Whirlwind get my votes

#27 6 years ago

Flash Gordon and Diner. Diner things just shoot out the outlanes. Tommy as well

#28 6 years ago

Fireball classic, no inlanes. And the spinner has a tendancy to throw the ball down either outlane or straight down the middle.

#29 6 years ago

Fish Tales is high on the hard list.

DE simpsons, Wwind, BSD, and IM are also tough IME.

#30 6 years ago

BSD...Lightning flippers and brutal outlanes...

#31 6 years ago

Quick Draw!

#33 6 years ago

STTNG - hands down the cruelest outlanes IMO.

Fully agreed. Pardon the cliché, BSD literally sinks it's teeth into your neck, drains your blood and rips out your freaking spine.

#36 6 years ago

yes def agree with f14 and BSD.

#37 6 years ago

Define cruel...

Do you mean, a game with short ball times that often leaves you cursing, when you are given no chance to save a ball?

How about a game with not 1, not 2, but 3 pops with line-of-sight to a drain... (This is not something you'll see again in a post-1981 pinball machine.)

I shall stop there, because Black Hole has no competition in the cruelty contest.

#38 6 years ago

From my experience BSD, AC/DC, STTNG, WOZ, but there are many I haven't played Also, I played a I500 and it kicked my ass but I am not sure it was set up properly.

#39 6 years ago

BSD and STTNG--I loathe the outlanes on those tables. They sure do ruin a good game in an instant.

No matter how good, fun, or pretty a table is, if the outlanes are drain monsters, it completely ruins the pin for me.

#40 6 years ago

IronMan for sure..............it's a love hate relationship and of course I keep coming back for more.

(Insert smart remark here CenterFlank)

#43 6 years ago

Flash Gordon, Jungle Lord, and Shadow can be tough at times.

Quoted from mof:

This thread was soundly resolved in this post:

I find there to be a difference between cruel and tough.

A tough game is one that you simply can't beat. For instance, I had an Avengers for 8 months, and realized I would never, EVER be able to get to Battle for Earth. I didn't find it a cruel game, though - it simply had a depth that I would not be able to achieve with my skill set.

Whirlwind, though...it's one of my favorite games. I think I've done pretty much everything on it save for closing the Skyway. But I will play it and sometimes, on a first ball, I'll be halfway to the Megadoor...and the next balls will just drain due to a bounce or spin of the discs, whatever. THAT is what I mean by cruel. A vicious little game that you just can't wait to play again.

Flash Gordon.

Darn that Ming! He's ... he's ... MERCILESS!

#46 6 years ago

BSD,IM,DW,I500,FT,WW,BR are the one's in my collection.

Flash Gordon. It even made Bowen cry.

No doubt about this one, I'm actually going to sell mine because everyone hates it in my house. My wife says, "what's the point of this one"?. The 2 minute games on it push everyone away.

I had a Fireball Classic. Those three inch flippers make it a lot easier to keep the ball in play than the two inch zipper flippers on the original Fireball.

But still neither compares to Big Daddy with it's very fast play, two inch flippers, no inlanes and
three inch outlanes.
