ZZ top? They haven't made a studio album since 2012 and nothing relevant for 20yrs.

System of a Down just released 2 new songs. Their first album was '99 and they still have the original members. They meet the criterion, but have been essentially been inactive since the albums from 2006, other than playing some festivals.

Primus, first album was '90 and most recent was 2017 and have had the same lineup since '90.

Weezer and Korn have had member changes.

RHCP has had lineup changes but wound up back with the '80 members, but no studio album since 2016.

The old rockers aren't getting any younger and we hear news of greats passing too frequently. Perhaps our current hardships will cultivate some new rock like it has in the past.

The Offspring fits perfectly.

I’m just happy Zeppelin is finally getting made and will be the first cornerstone of 2021 for Stern.

Would love a Motörhead pin.
Pink Floyd would sell well.
Beastie Boys would sell huge.

Slayer retired but would sell.
Pantera would sell, still a good following.
Back in the day Dime approached Joe Blackwell to get a game made. Sadly it never happened.

I love your Rammstein pick @vid1900! They’re one of my favorites, would love to see a pinball machine based on them.
So much material and great songs you could use, it would surely rock!(pun intended )

Difficult rules to find another rock band that’s still topping the chart now!
I’ll have to try to come up with one

Interesting quote from a recent Rolling Stone interview with Weird Al Yankovic:

“The album I listened to the most in 2020 was ‘A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip’ by Sparks. I’ve always loved those guys, and I’m inspired and amazed by the fact that they’ve been consistently releasing brilliant albums since the 70s. They’ve never lost a step.”

Bob Dylan’s new album is really, really good. His band is irrelevant (unless it’s The Band).

That's the idea.

It's easy to just name a bunch of old bands.

It's harder to think outside of the box, like Los Lobos

#58 3 years ago

Killing Joke. Say no more.

#59 3 years ago

Pet Shop Boys. Still touring, New 2020 album “Hotspot” reached #3 on UK charts.

The closest I can think of: their bassist was swapped out recently, but other than that they have been remarkably consistent for over 20 years and have some of the best live performances ever.

The Hives

#61 3 years ago

Dinosaur Jr might be the way to go here. Great indie trio. Still putting out great music like it’s 1987.

#62 3 years ago

Tool is the best I can think of without putting a lot of thought into it.

#63 3 years ago

System of a Down has been around since the 80s, still tours, and just released a couple of songs....

Top 5 Rad Bands that MOSTLY fit these criteria!

5. Green Day
4. Tool
3. Radiohead
2. Foo Fighters
1. Weezer

#65 3 years ago

They don't fit the criteria, but Metallica, last tour sold out stupid fast, and album wasn't bad and AC/DC, just released a new album. I do like the Rammstein pick.

Good to see you back Vid.

#66 3 years ago

The Flaming Lips (same core trio since the 90’s).
Ween, They Might Be Giants, The Melvins (same core duo since the 80’s).
Radiohead (original members).

They might not be #1 on Billboard, but these bands have consistently released boundary pushing rock music. IMO the Lips have surpassed Pink Floyd as the best psychedelic rock band ever.

#67 3 years ago

The Strokes

Over 2 decades, and still keeping stripped to the bones rock tight.

Their new album hit #6 on BB200 chart earlier this year.

For sure....and Race For The Prize foretold our Covid futures.

The Flaming Lips - Race For The Prize

Two scientists are racing
For the good of all mankind
Both of them side-by-side
So determined

Locked in heated battle
For the cure that is their prize
But it's so dangerous
But they're determined

Theirs is to win
If it kills them
They're just humans
With wives and children

Upwards to the vanguard
Where the pressure is too high
Under the microscope
Hope against hope

Forging for the future
But to sacrifice their lives
Both of them side-by-side
So determined

Theirs is to win
If it kills them
They're just humans
With wives and children

Madness is still touring with six of its seven original members. One member Chas Smash is taking a break from the band, but hasn’t permanently quit them yet. Their most recent album “Can’t Touch Us Now” released in 2016 reached #5 on the UK charts.

Any Sloan fans? Been doing it since '91 with no break ups and no lineup changes. For me, they're the greatest Canadian export of the last 30 years. I was introduced to them in the Mid 90's by recently defunct 89X radio out of Windsor and have been a big fan ever since. I've seen them every time they've come to Detroit, usually at St. Andrews Hall.

By another definition, the greatest "Dinosaur" band has to be "T. Rex" (they are in the R&R Hall of Fame).

Garbage is still touring with all original members. Their most recent album “Strange Little Birds” debuted at #1 on both Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts in 2016.

Most of the members of Garbage were already dinosaurs when the group started.- haha. I do like a lot of their tunes.

The Killers get off easy, by being a 2 man band.

But after 2 decades, the hits keep coming; their latest album "Imploding The Mirage" peaking at #8 two months ago on the BB200

ZZ top? They haven't made a studio album since 2012 and nothing relevant for 20yrs.

I saw them at a casino on the last tour up front and there was an entire row of hot drunk 20 something year old girls dancing the whole time in front of me...

that was pretty relevant to me. And much appreciated..

Gosh, Vid. I like the Killers, particularly their 1st two records. I think they still have about 10 years before they become “Dinosaur Rock” though. I think that you have to at least be HOF eligible before you get the dinosaur rock label. They’ve only been around 16 or 17 years and Brandon Flowers isn’t even 40 years old yet.

I was going to bring up the Lips, but figured they wouldn't count because it's not the original lineup.

I reject your insulting and demeaning question.
Music is a wonderous gift.
Whether its 500 years old or second old.
And shortsighted people try to reduce it to words like relevance.
Shame on your poorly thought out question.

Message from the Freeeek Kingdom.

P.S. new Lost Themes on vinyl February 5th.
Hooray!!!

Iron Butterfly

One of the original members disappeared in 1995, found in 1999. Initial thoughts were suicide but still seems as though there is a mystery about his death. His remains were found in a hilly area ( appears as though he had driven his car off the road and died) .

I’ll follow that up with Coldplay... I can’t take but they pack the stadiums. Do the Libertines count?

Pearl Jam- our U2..
Radiohead- still relevant? Big fan but last 10 years were experimental trash
U2- name another band with that many hits over 4 decades? They went from rebel rock- mainstream- experimental- rock- elevator..

I think the point of this thread is 1. It is crazy hard to be in rock for more then 10 years with the same people every damn day 2. Most current rock stations are still playing these dinosaurs..

311.

My personal favorite. rock/rap band doing their thing for 30 years with 13 full albums, many of those have been platinum. All albums have the original 5 members. Most popular for their mid 90's self titled album. They put on a 2 day, 50 song concert on March 11 (3/11) every other year and head line the 311 Caribbean Cruise every few years. Packed shows with a fun vibe!

Stay positive and love your life!

Great Michigan band but there's an overly stringent set of rules that they cant pass.

#95 3 years ago

How about Golden Earring? Although not all original members (they formed in 1961), all musicians in the present lineup of the band have been continuous members of the band since 1970, although other musicians have joined and left the band during the intervening years. Their last album was in 2012, and went to #1 on the Dutch charts twice (not released in the US), so they’re still apparently somewhat relevant. They did record and release a single in October 2019...

Tough one to meet all criteria.....ZZ Top is good and may be one of the few that checks all the boxes.
AC/DC is close considering the only reason any members left is they died. But still recording and same sound/formula still works for them.
Rolling Stones but they have had line up changes.

Solo acts are tough because the backing bands almost always change lineups over the years...or no new material is released.

Even if you changed the rules so that bands had to have 2 or more founding members most haven’t recorded anything relevant. Most are just touring on their old hits.

This is a tough one....

Here’s the fundamental question. Does playing La Grange live for the 157,000th time make you relevant?

I say yes.

The Stones have to be the oldest band with any relevance today. The only Stones lineup changes of relevance were Brian Jones in 69 and Bill Wyman in 93. So pretty remarkable they have remained largely unchanged as the rest of the supporting cast really aren’t considered Rolling Stones. Even Darryl Jones after 27 years of playing bass isn’t considered a Rolling Stone, just a hired gun. They are still recording music that isn’t bad.

I’ll throw The Who into the mix, yes they lost their bass and drummer because they passed away but they are trucking on and still recording music. Last album is actually pretty darn good.
