    Are they interchangeable at all?

    specs say 4001 is 50v 30A
    and 4004 is 400v 400A
    interchangeable, yup. 4004 is hotter
should be interchangeable. but I would look for yourself

Yes interchangeable. Either should be good, but the 4004 has higher tolerance.

I standardize on 4004. It's better when replacing a component to put one in that has a higher tolerance so that it is less susceptible to failure in the future.
