    For a high quality no-frills all purpose station I’d recommend a Hakko FX 951. The heating element and temperature sensor is integrated into the tips, and it has excellent temp control and gets up to temp within a few seconds. There is an extremely wide selection of tips suitable for everything from SMT to heavy-gauge terminal lugs (as well as nonelectronic stuff like jewelry and stained glass). The tips themselves are very high quality and wet better than anything else I’ve ever used, and will probably last a lifetime with hobbyist use. Every part is replaceable (down to the component level), and is all made in Japan.
