$400 HUO RS ~3 years ago. It didn't boot and was dirty, but figured I wasn't taking much of a chance at that price. Fortunately found a couple cables plugged in wrong. Booted and played fine after fixing that.

    Ditto that.

You guys reminded me of the $250 Meteor I bought.

When I went to see it, I lifted out the backglass and was immediately disappointed to see the insert panel was charred. I laid the glass down and saw the back was covered with packing tape. It saved most of the art so that's good, I guess. I swung open the door and saw more soot and water damage. The display trays and backglass lock mech were rusty. It was obvious this is where the fire started.

Then I noticed the boards. They were all perfect. All had been replaced. The MPU was a brand new Alltek. I immediately closed it up, loaded it, paid the man and sped out of there.

The best part (and I've got to take a pic and add it to the worst hack thread) was the fan mounted in the head. Obviously, it got too hot in there and that's why it caught fire. Couldn't possibly have been because some prior owner used screws for fuses.

Back in 1996 my boss, who runs arcades says, hey you're heavy into pinball yes?
I'm looking for a female friendly machine with the old style scoring.
We don't seem to have such a machine in the company so maybe you have.
I say, sure i have a very nice Bally Nip-it in good shape, that should be ok.
Turns out it was a request from a female mayor as a prop for a city hall in a town where we were lobbying for a casino permit.
After i show him a picture of the nip-it he says; great that what i'm looking for.
How do you want to get paid?
This is in the time that pinball was waning and alot of machines were in the company building waiting to get traded away, so i offer him to maybe swap the nip it for a machine from that flock.
Excellent idea, he said.Take your pick and inform the sales manager you take that machine and that i'm fine with it.
That evening i took home a Medieval madness with 900 games on the bookkeeping...

About to pick something up Monday. Will be the best deal I have ever scored. Cant say what it is yet, till I get it home. Don't want to jinx it. But I am very excited.

Just think how i feel. I was buying several pins a month on average of about $250 a game until 2009 then took a break from the hobby until we finally moved to a bigger house last year. Prices are probably
    4 times as high now.

I blame the flippers who have no intention of owning and only buying, to then put it back up for sale for a ridicules price without doing anything to the pin. To be honest, them people need to go to hell. We have a lot of douche bags in the bay area that do just that. I don't think they even play pinball.

However, we have some that are honest and do great work. I bought a few pins from a guy in Discovery Bay "Bill" that flips pins and he is not only a great guy he really fixes up and delivers an amazing pin. Also very helpful if you ever need help. He's A+++++ awesome. So we have hope. As for the other F**kers that buy everything decent just for profit and jack up the prices the next day... Judgment Day is waiting for you... "Hasta la vista, baby."

not a pin, but got a free pacman cocktail yesterday. within 5 minutes had it up and working.
hacks that need fixed, but monitor has been replaced at some point with a VERY clean one and top glass is scratch free. Gonna mod it to play 4 pac games and high score save and some cosmetic stuff that will total about $100 and have a sweet game.

Went to look at my grail pin that one of these flippers had. I know for a fact he paid less than $100 for it (he paid $200 for 2 pins and 4 or 5 jukes) and did nothing but vacuum out mouse poop and wanted me to pay him $500 for it. I said $350, he said no, and I left.

I still can't believe I walked away from my grail pin over a lousy 150 bucks, but I knew he'd be calling me back. Sure enough, a week later he accepted my offer.

I got an Elektra in 2011 for $25 off Craigslist from a guy that bought a storage unit of games. Needed a MPU and backglass (still looking for one).

Addams Family in 2013 from a neighbor that saw my games in the garage for $2600, nice condition.

This week I got a FREE Fire! from my sons Cub Scout den leader who is getting ready to move. Dead batteries and some display issues.

Someone I knew at work had a Whirlwind that needed a minor repair. I
went over and fixed it for him and since it was very easy I didn't charge
him anything. Later on, he asked me if I would be interested in buying it
for $450 and he would bring it to me. It was in great shape and there
was nothing wrong with it. At the time, I was strictly into EMs and
I almost turned it down. Then I realised that it was too good of a deal
pass up and bought it. Later I found out it was a prototype serial
#2, the second one made. It has production roms in the game but
it came with prototype roms revision 0 in the cash box.

500 bucks for a Demo man that was really with a ton of switch errors etc, but all boards were present and fine and did turn on and play.

2400 for both Last Action Hero and World Cup Soccer '94 both in good condition and functioning perfectly.

    #81 4 years ago

The best was an operators 14 pins, a dedicated Ms Pacan /Galaga. Sit down Ms Pacman/ Galaga and a few Megatouches for $10,500. He wanted $15K, I bid him 10K, plus it came with 5 locations or so.

I went to a Nascar event (not huge fan, and tried to find a way of not going) when someone was handing out the Wilkes / Berry tribune and there was a classified for a $1000 pinball. Turned out they had 4, TZ, FH, FT, and Mario Andretti. The MA was in the worst shape, the others were 8's-9's. She gave me the old I just saw a TZ go for 4K on e bay, and a FH went for 3K, etc story but I wound up getting them all for $4800.

I got a true HUO LOTR ( with Pinball Sales price card), for $1500

Just got a HUO POTC for $2300

Just got a HUO LOTR for $2300

    A beautiful HH for $1300

A nice Top Card for $200

A free Surfer. ( nice condition, but not working)

    #82 4 years ago

Bought a mint Maverick for $900. The real deal was finding 5 spare motors valued at $90 each and 4 large DMD screens in bottom of case valued at $450 each. Obviously the pf was not lifted when I bought it, lucky me. Tried to be nice and call the guy back months later when I discovered them. Phone disconnected so I sold the stuff except for 1 spare. I actually made money and still have the pin.

    #83 4 years ago

Eight Ball. $150. It needed a bunch of work, but I still have it.

    #84 4 years ago

Congrats to all who posted, lots of great deals.
2 for me that stand out the most were a Free Bally Eight Ball and a perfect mint TZ.Not even a mark on the cabinet. They shopped it for me too before I picked it up. I gladly handed him $1500 for the machine. But that was 12-15 years ago too and I still have it.

    #85 4 years ago

Karma is finally getting back to me. I've been promised a near-mint POTC from some wonderful people who are moving within the next year. They want it to go to somebody who will show it some love.

But....since God hates me, their house will probably burn down and that'll be that.

    #86 4 years ago

Bought 3 machines for $200 just last weekend. Stern Trident, Gottlieb Count Down, and Williams Full House. They're all projects, but still a good deal down here in the south.

    #87 4 years ago

Got a Top Hand and Firepower for Free. "They don't work, get them outta here"

    A couple of fuses later...

    #88 4 years ago

Last summer found a WWFRR at a garage sale for $300. Said he was going to ask 400 but couldn't find the keys. It was pretty mintyyyy.

    #89 4 years ago

I got a few games for free, but they were all $400-600 range games.

I got a nice, domestic WMS IJ for 2200 back in 2007. A HUO BTTF for 600. A very nice Fast Draw for 225. A couple years ago, I bought a Sinbad for 200, repaired it, and traded it for a Black Rose that same week. 7 years ago, I traded a working upright Pac-man arcade for my Devil Riders. I'm counting that as a $400 Devil Riders. $100 Strikes and Spares, $400 Sample Sorcerer. I can't honestly remember what I paid for my sample SOF... something like $1000.

I picked up a fully working Getaway for $1000 in March of this year. There's still some deals out there!

    #90 4 years ago

Eight Ball for $20. Needed a backglass. Otherwise in great shape and fully working (ball was stuck under a plastic).

    #91 4 years ago

My first pin $275 working beater space shuttle. Or a junk Eight Ball Deluxe LE for $150

    #92 4 years ago

I'm getting a space station for replacing some header pins and bullet-proofing a couple of boards. I also may get a Tempest out of it.

Today I looked at a few pins that I may fix for a gun shop owner in trade for guns or cash.

    #93 4 years ago

I've had some deals, but to me nothing beats this. Not mine but I came across on RGP June 2002 and I don't know who the user is or if they're on Pinside, but good God look at that deal. That's like $50k worth of games in today's market, just 13 years ago.
    Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 7.04.05 PM.png

Yeah, but this is all about context. Some of these games went up a LOT since then. In particular at that time, TAF, TZ, STTNG and CP were all pretty easy to find under $2k. I somehow managed to collect all the games that appreciated the least since then, it seems. If I was in this for money, man do I wish I had better taste

    Quoted from KingDaddy:

I don't think so... There may be a period where things flatten out - and some less desirable titles depreciate - but since there is a finite number of existing machines and demand is there, my bet is a continued upward trend in prices over the next ten years. You may see certain coveted titles appreciate a lot a more.

I honestly don't think we're going to see a continued upward trend in prices over the next 10 years - at this point, we have multiple manufacturers pumping out really good new machines that people are swooping in to purchase regularly. Heck, I - who rarely have ever had the want to purchase more recent titles - have three games that were made within the past five years in my collection now.

Unlike card collecting, or even video game or action figure collecting where adding one or two things doesn't really take up that much space, with the exception of a few people, after a certain 'critical mass' is reached, one bought pinball machine has to equal one sold pinball machine just due to space constraints, so unless we're welcoming in enough people to absorb however many new games are coming out a year at their prices, demand will drop as space is filled up. Based on the amount of collectors I see purchasing new games, I assume that will squeeze the older games more.

Time will tell. Since routing pinball has come back at least somewhat in some areas, I do think that there is a solid floor for some titles too.

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot - I don't like talking about deals I work out with other collectors personally, but my best "public" deal was an auction probably 7 years ago now where I got a SMBMW fully functional for $425 after fees. It was folded up and the auctioneers told us all it was working they just didn't have legs. No one believed them, but they managed to tell the truth and they actually sold all three that were in the line. The FH that sat beside it sold for $800 after fees to someone I know too. It was darn near mint.
