A few of you might remember a few posts in some STLE threads where I refused to buy one, as the local Stern distributors thought it would be a stirling idea to increase the price to $13,500 NZD. Xmen, Avengers etc were $10-11k NZD, that was far too much to pay for a pinball machine as it was. $13,500 is just crazy.

STLE might be the best game ever, who knows ... but $13,500 is too dear for me.

So, I went on a quest to see how many machines I could get for $13,500.

Remember this thread relates to the New Zealand market (and prices) but I'm 100% sure that it relates in a similar fashion to your local market.

So, here we go .... $13,500 ... what can I blow it on ....

1/ Bally Pool Sharks

Some of you may know that I collect System 11 machines, and I almost have all of them. Some of them just aren't available in NZ ... either they didn't import any, or if they did they have been smashed up or stored somewhere very hidden because i have never seen them. Pool Sharks was a game I had never seen until I went to IFPA10 in Germany last year, they used one in the main comp.

I found this one in the UK ... 600 Pounds. Could have got a cheaper one but this one was nice and the owner would pack it for me for free (thats a big issue for us guys down under!)

The machine arrived mint, I threw a NZ plug on it, fired it up and away she went. A quick clean and some LEDs and she's all good.

600 quid plus shipping, GST etc ... thats the first $2000 NZ gone. $11,500 left .....

I like where this is going!

2/ Apollo 13

Not really a game I was looking for, but 13 ball multiball ... thats got to be good, doesn't it?

One was listed for sale for a while on our local auction site, it was offered for $2000 NZD so I took a punt.

Machine turned out to be pretty good nick, nice cabinet, good PF, but the legs, rails, hinges and lockdown bar were a little rusty from being in this guys basement. I removed them and had them blasted and repowdercoated for $100 the lot. Added LEDs and rebuilt the flippers, did the rubbers and buffed the PF .. came up nice.

The first time I got 13 ball multiball going, I just cracked up laughing! Its just mental! Balls everywhere. Worse than a gay sauna. So I've heard.

Total investment ... $2200 NZD.

$9,300 left to go ....

3/ WWF Royal Rumble

Always a game I've wanted ... I've just been waiting for one to pop up in good nick at the right price.

Got this one locally last week. Really tidy cabinet (best I've seen) and very good PF. Guy had already done LEDs etc (he bought them from me ...) A few little tweaks here and there and shes a good'un!

Has the topper too which is a good bonus! Good game, maybe the theme isn't everyones favorite but I like it!

Total cost: $2000

Money left in the kitty: $7,300

4/ Genie

I played in the IFPA10 last year in Germany. The comp was 8x EM, 8x SS, 8x Modern. I did OK on the modern but sucked extremely badly on the EM and SS because I haven't played any of them for 10-20 years. My collection is all System11 games and newer.

So I needed to mix it up a little to get some practice in before IFPA11 in Denver this May.

This Genie popped up. It has a tidy cabinet, a really good PF, was nicely shopped up and has the added bonus of a Pascal all in one board which cures the unreliability issues which steered me away from the old games.

Total cost $1500 (the Pascal board alone is worth $400 NZD + ....)

Money left in the bank: $5,800

5/ Bally Game Show

Another System11 game for my collection. Again, I'd never seen one of these before I went to Germany last year.

I found a minter in Utah, nicely shopped and again, the guys were really good and packed it, palleted it, and arranged some cheap freight to the port in LA for me.

It hasn't landed yet (I wasn't going to even post it in case I jinx it ...)

Total cost is yet to be determined but it should be $2000 NZD

Money left in the piggy bank: $3,800

Keep tuned, more pins on the way in the next few weeks!!

Come on Flank ... that doesn't have 13 ball multiball!

13 is the new norm now.

Why have 4 or 5 or 6 .... when you can have 13!

Its just pure gold.

Like one of those showers you can get.

I'd take the 5 girls.
As long as I could have them all at once....

I'm with Vid on this one .... Vid again proves he's a wise man.

Besides, most girls who are "genuine 10s" that I have met are total bitches who are so far up themselves it isn't funny ....

Was the money really burning a hole in your pocket? Why not consider not spending all that money buying many machines?

But dont listen to me I am on a spending spree again something I promised myself I would not do again. But here I go with two heps, a trade for STLE, and a gorgeous TAF soon. So I am not one to judge but of the games listed I to would have gotten STLE. But cool collection no doubt.

10s are too high maintenance, give me a solid 4 who smokes Marlboro 100's and she will polish your shooter rod in the parking lot.

Great thread. Nice price on the Apollo 13 too!

#30 10 years ago

Love this. Now all you're missing is what is possibly the greatest pinball machine of ALL TIME!!!!! Haha, I kid. I love my STLE, but I would trade it for your 100 machines in a heartbeat. I will even ship it to NZ for you! As long as you'll look after shipping the 100 my way. I'll take care of the power conversions, that shouldn't be your concern.

Quoted from vid1900:

After I *ahem* cleaned up, I spent more time looking at details.

Very interesting thread. Good for you Dave! I really like where this is going. Well played.

For the record, as nice as that 10 example is - I'd take the 5 all day long. I love baths!

#45 10 years ago
Quoted from starbase:

I could have *not* spent the coin.

But that wouldn't be much fun now, would it?

Also, the System 11s I am looking for only come up every now and again, so I have to grab them when I can. It just happens that they came up at the same time.

Great answer Dave, money is money and pinball is fun. I thought I had cured my pinball buying addiction but apparently 2014 is going to be a crazy ride.
