What does the adjustable metal block on Gottlieb score reels do?

I had to move it out of the way on one of my reels because it was causing it to bind intermittently causing issues. It doesn't seem to do anything although it seems to be adjustable. Am I missing something?

On the 'rat trap' style score reel, that block helps center the stopping point of the reel (I think; been awhile since I've fiddled with one). So when you see the digits displayed through the backglass, when one 'dips' low, that's why.

(I'm going by memory here, so caveats abound.)
