Quoted from CaptainNeo:

is that the ramp that does NOT have the loop around? Mine has the loop around. I don't mind it, but it does consistantly go down the far right lane every time.

Exactly. I don't mind it, per se, but I like the added flow and intensity of the upgrade. It's particularly noticable during the main multiball, when you can just tee off when the balls are launched directly to the left flipper, rather than wait for them to randomly come out of the pops...because like you say, you never know what kind of bounce you are going to get from them. You definitely have to work harder to get your JAM multipliers builtup with the upgrade, but overall I like the flow much better.

DE Golden years (DMD era)
Sega DE Coattail years (Large DMDs)
Sega Crap years (the rest of them)
Stern Sega Coattail years (up to TSPP)
Stern Golden years (TSPP, LOTR, RBION, POTC, SM)
Stern Dark ages (CSI, 24, NBA, IJ, Avatar, RS)
Stern Renaissance (IM, Tron, TF, Xmen)

+1. Right on the money.

Wwf royal rumble is the best

Wwf Royal Rumble is the best

I'm not sure I think it's the best, but it is a very nice game indeed. Only thing that's really missing IMO is a loop-shot, for the rest it's a great game with nice shots and rules.

#157 8 years ago

I've found I really enjoy DE games -- but it's probably because they had all the licensed themes that I tend to love and collect. That's a pro and con, since the themes often times are a huge turn-off for many people. Specifically WWF Royal Rumble tends to be underrated by those who don't like pro-wrestling. But comparing that game's features, rules, and shots - it really stacks up against the greats and provides a huge value for the price (considering it's typically a sub $2k pin). I own that and the new WrestleMania LE, and I find myself playing Royal Rumble more frequently after the initial newness of the game wore off.

I also just picked up Batman and while I've played it quite a bit prior to purchase, and it's not a deep game, the theme and artwork are fantastic especially for a huge Batman fan (specifically the Tim Burton/Michael Keaton movies.)

A comment I've noticed a few times in this thread is about the sound quality of DE games. They all definitely have a very similar "sound" amongst all the games, but I just purchased a PinSound Board (PinSound.org) which replaces the DE sound board and is one of the best upgrades I've ever installed! It was like going from an old AM radio to a Bose sound system! Not only does it allow independent volume and EQ for each of the 3 speakers, it allows you to replace every sound from the original ROMs with high quality WAV files of your choice! It's unbelievable how much that makes the game even more enjoyable - especially these licensed games like Star Wars, WWF, Batman, etc... which can now use the real music and themes from the movies or shows they're based on.

R&B is super fun, not super deep though; so can get a little boring after awhile.

I have WWFRR; love it; was my first pin, and still play it a ton. I have played GnR; awesome; want to get one at some point. Checkpoint is alright, kind of cheesy; there TFTC and JP as well.

DE's don't get the love they deserve, I think they are extremely fun; dependable too; I didn't have many issues at all with my WWFRR or R&B.

Dude, that sounds sweet!! Might have to try that with my WWFRR; that probably sounds insane.

Data East has its fair share of bad games, like Royal Rumble (I know, make fun of me all you want) and Batman.

IMHO Tales from the Crypt is the best game they put out during their existence. Fun shots, a great horror theme, a deep ruleset, and some amazing atmosphere combine to make possibly the best horror themed table this side of Walking Dead.

torpedo alley. Amazing game with that system 11 feel [even though its a de]. Great sounds and cheesy artwork and amazing game play. Just a blast to play everytime I push start.

If you like drop targets Maverick can't be beat!

#167 8 years ago

Data East pins were rolled out of the closed Stern Factory, with Gary at the helm, and Japanese video game money financing the show.
Purchased by Sega mid Maverick run, until closure, and re-opened as the Stern we love today.

If you look at the names behind many of the Data East titles you will find them on the modern Stern's

From the repair side of the business I can say without a doubt, the Data East product was built just as good as, and in many cases better than Bally Williams. They added many 1st rate innovations to pins that we take for granted today.

From a operators standpoint back in the day, Data East product required less repair for the same revenue earned, and that was gold!

Back on topic: Overlooked, but some day sure to highly sought after, as it's a pinball players pin the 1st Data East produced

Laser War, another great one Secret Service, and Phantom of the Opera.

Yes, Yes I know not super deep rule set, but great players, that keep you coming back for more.

My two bits.

So true and why it was the first DE/Sega I bought. I really like the rule set and how the drops are utilized in Maverick.

Guns N' Roses is the best Data East by a mile. Lyman Sheats code, John Borg/Slash designed, and now 100x better because of pinsound boards- just have a look below of mine in action.

#170 8 years ago

Duff Mckagan remembers how a dispute over the Guns N' Roses pinball machine helped teach him the importance of friendship and letting bygones be bygones.

From How to be a Man (and other illusions) by Duff McKagan.

In the maelstrom that ensued after GN’R’s Use Your Illusion tour, my good friend Gilby was somehow chucked from the lineup. I say “somehow” because, in all honesty, I don’t remember precise details about the second half of 1993 and the beginning of 1994. All I know for sure is that we had a new Guns N’ Roses pinball machine.

I don’t intend to get into a whole video game versus pinball machine war here, but it’s hard to deny the romance of the blinking lights of a pinball machine. The sound of the pinballs dropping into the catch still raises the heart rates of us ’70s kids. We can still picture the other kids gathering around the glass as we took our turns. If you were good, you gave off a Steve McQueen–like mystique. The kids who were good at pinball got laid more (kind of like video gamers of today, right? Oh, wait...).

Slash was always one of those Steve McQueen–like pinball studs. He was good at every pinball game out there. Not that this should come as a surprise: whether it’s guitars, snakes, dinosaurs, or pinball, Slash studies and excels at the things he is passionate about.

Sometime during the Use Your Illusion tour, Slash—a collector as well as a player—hooked up with manufacturer Data East, and the idea of a Guns N’ Roses game started getting floated around.

We grew up with some great pinball machines. The Playboy machine was epic. The Rolling Stones had one. KISS had one. There were gambling-themed games and Western-themed games. For our band to actually be entered into a conversation of having our own game was a totally cool and unbelievable step in our otherwise totally unbelievable ride up the rockandroll escalator.

Like I said, I wasn’t very conscious at the time, but I remember going to a recording studio in the San Fernando Valley to do voice-over sound bites for the game (the “oh, dude!” when you lose a ball is me... I think). McBob laid down an introduction for the game the same way he ushered us onstage every night: “Of all the bands in the world, this is definitely one of them!” McBob has a huge, deep voice and can sound exactly like the guy on one of those monster truck radio commercials. McBob also has a very dry sense of humor and would change up his intros of the band to fit certain opportunities. For example, when we were late to take the stage, McBob would announce us as “the band that put the punk in punctuality.”

Slash worked hard on the design of the game and was rightfully proud of the finished product. I was blown away when the machine showed up at my house (we each got one for free). I still have it, and it has a little plaque in the bottom right-hand corner with my name on it.

The game was designed after Izzy Stradlin left the band and Gilby started playing with us. It’s obvious that it was a forgone conclusion that Gilby would be in the band for keeps, as his picture was included on the big mural of the band on the game. Ah, but rock bands can be a fickle bitch, and Gilby, in a flash of confusion and a hiccup of GN’R growing pains, suddenly wasn’t in the band anymore.

Gilby, pissed off for sure, sued us for using his likeness on the machine. I remember thinking back then that this was a point when Gilby rightfully could have written me off (for life) for not standing up for him, and I could have just carried on without him in my life ever again as well. I think we both did that for a while.

There was a lot going on. My drinking began to drive Matt Sorum and Slash away from me. After the Use Your Illusion tour, even though Gilby was out of GN’R, he kept on playing live with Matt and Slash for a project they had all just finished (Slash’s Snakepit). I guess I could have resented that, and they could have just kept resenting me.

In the US, we are all told that at eighteen years of age, you are an adult. For me, real adulthood didn’t come until I was thirty-one. I had no idea how to take responsibility for my actions before then. I’m still trying to figure it out.

It came to me all at once, up onstage at the Avalon: “I like these guys!” I thought. No, I love these guys. I’ve passed some of life’s most momentous mile markers with Slash, and Gilby is a good guy and great friend. Matt and I sometimes fight like cats and dogs, but at the bottom of it all, we have sincere respect for each other. We can all be motherfuckers from time to time, but that’s life. When I became an adult, I made a concerted effort to repair my friendships with these guys.

Resentment is a brutal thing. In the first year or two after I got sober, I found myself swimming in a dense, black swamp of resentment and regret. I heard stories about myself in which I was the punch line. I started to recognize what alcoholism had kept me from doing, from experiencing.

My peculiar life path at the time, though, led me to a martial arts discipline that dealt with taking responsibility for your own actions and bettering yourself for yourself. Self-discipline and self-respect were completely new ideas to me. I was desperate for a new way of living, and because I was (and still am) in such awe of how much at peace my martial arts teacher was, I followed his instruction to the extreme. I wanted just a little part of that peace.

Working past regret and resentment was key to me actually liking myself. The more I liked and trusted myself, the less I blamed others. I stopped thinking about what could have been and focused on the things I could do now.

But that was just my own personal story, and these three guys had found their own way past some of the resentments and regret. We all eventually became friends again, played in bands together, and found ourselves in faraway places playing great rock songs together, in front of a ton of people— with Billy Ray Cyrus in support.

Yes! It is my understanding that Data East was 1st to market with the dmd display. Now
I am 52 and grew up playing pinball without a video type display...but I now I am hooked on pins with this technology! All 19 of my pis are dmd

Oh yeah....hmm best d.e. pin......ummmmmmmm.......Tommy for sure. Miss mine bad now. Blinders are the best concept and really put you close to being in aTommy's actual shoes while playing!

#172 8 years ago

I haven't played all of them, but of the ones I have, Guns 'n Roses wins. Lots of good shots, a great soundtrack, combos, lots of multiball, and a very satisfying wizard mode.

#173 8 years ago

I haven't played all of them yet either, but hands down for me, TFTC. Crap ton of modes and I've yet to get to crypt jam because that darn scoop is so hard to hit. I have gotten close several times, been only one or two modes away. I really dig the art and the sounds, including the laugh, but I am also a big fan of the show from the 90s.

I have not played a Tommy or GnR yet, none in my area, so I reserve the right to change my opinion

Three spinners, shaker motor, 6 ball multi ball, metal ramps. Loaded game all it needs is a color DMD so many great dots.

#177 8 years ago

I own 3, Leathal Weapon 3 , Royal Rumble, and Batman. 2 Sterns and a JJP. I think Data East has great themes, and ball play. Plus they are beautiful pieces of art. I wish people would make more replacement parts for them. That is the only down side to them, no parts, no color dmd's. Wake up world Data East is great.

#178 8 years ago

Does GNR play there music? Sorry if dumb question , I have never seen one in person.

I've owned gnr and tftc and time machine. All super pins. Great modes on the first two.

The one thing I dislike is the pops. Not as snappy as Williams.

#184 8 years ago

BTTF folks it's 2015! Great game, this pin takes a lot of heat on certain issues, artwork, to much doc call outs, and I've heard lame skill shot. But, this game is hard, it's a low scoring game that is hard to fullfill the objective, and the skill shot is not easy. Love the music, my favorite data east.
Hook, is the worst.

#185 8 years ago

Guns N Roses my top pick . Great music for the era and bad ass band. Back To The Future was a fun game. I own a G N R. hard to part with

#186 8 years ago

Tftc is the best where else can u see the crpyt keeper cut himself in half with a chain saw or blow his brains out with a 44 lmao people love it may not be for the kiddies though
Gnr close second

My daughter loved TFTC so some kids like it.

#189 8 years ago

LW3 has awesome sound:
great callouts and movie quotes
choice of music
fun chimes when you get past 100k points
besides good shots, multiball, extraball,
just try to let go of the flippers and grab
the gun during gameplay. challenge. fun.

#190 8 years ago

Jurassic Park.

The first time people see the T-Rex eat the ball is always worth it. And don't forget the shock of seeing the ball fire back at them from the raptor pit!

#191 8 years ago

WWFRR is a game I always come back to. Great game hands down! Also the price is right.

#192 8 years ago

I have WWF, and owned R&B. Love DE pins, GNR is on my want list; it's amazing IMO.

Not sure why everyone rags on DE's; I have B/W and newer Stern, and there is a certain charm with them.

R&B is very fun, but a little shallow; great family pin. WWF is deep, lots of shots to hit at different angles, the geometry is interesting and I still play it almost every day after getting it over a year ago.

Go with a DE, you won't regret it.

Bttf all the way.

TMNT!
Cowabunga dudes!

TMNT is on the list of pins I want to pick up some day.

Just picked up a TFTC - been playing a lot of games on it and I'm enjoying it. Soon to join the collection is a Maverick. Looking forward to the drop targets.

Had a GNR - wasn't overly impressed by it.

Have had a JP for a few years and it is still a lot of fun.

Secret Service is the DE that is similar to High Speed.
