Title says it all. What are your top 5 or so, regardless of manufacturer?

#2 9 years ago

I'm personally partial to mid 70s Gottlieb wedgeheads. There are lots of other cool games out there, with fun layouts, and different eras provide their own great gameplay, from wood rails to 2" flippers etc, I think it's truly more about what you grew up with or what style tickles you. I enjoy playing the other games, but for my own collection I want 3" flippers and drop targets and rules that reward careful shooting, and not just luck.

I'm still pretty new to EMs, but I've been putting in my playing time to learn what I like, and I definitely suggest doing the same if you get opportunities.

Abra Ca Dabra - My favorite. Love the theme, love the art, and it's all about drops and accurate shots. You can hit everything from the flippers, no luck required. The roving bonus makes the drops more interesting, and you have to hit a dangerous shot to reset them, nothing automatic.

Centigrade 37 - The gameplay isn't quite as strong on this one, but it's got a theme that is just great, art on backglass and playfield is fabulous, and the layout gives you a variety of shots. Bagatelle, saucer, drops, nudging required. It's the whole package.

Atlantis - Similar to Centigrade 37 in some ways, but with weaker art, and stronger gameplay. The way you can hit two different colored drops at once for the bonus is brilliant.

El Dorado - There's a reason there are so many versions of this game, single player, multi player, SS remake. It's just a strong title, with a really solid playfield design, multiple flippers, great shooter. Target Alpha and Solar City are great, but the single player version comes with stronger rules, and that's always the trump for me. We can take turns, the games don't last that long.

My fifth slot isn't settled yet. I just picked up a Sky Jump, and I'm enjoying that. It has a cool little rule set, with matching the rollovers to the drops, and a roving bonus. I'm also partial to Jacks Open, I think that might be the card themed one I'd want to represent that style from Gottlieb, though High Hand is another strong contender.

Jack's Open - incredible strategy game. Looks simple but its not. Feels solid as a rock. One of the all time greats.

Slick Chick - I love this game. Great looking and great bumpers action. Hard

#4 9 years ago

My five are...
Abra Ca Dabra
Buccaneer
Hit The Deck
Atlantis
Centigrade 37
Triple Strike
Ok, let's make it six.

#5 9 years ago

Mine:

Cowpoke (a resetting Buckaroo, more better!)
Atlantis
Abra
Sweet Hearts
Kings&Queens or maybe Slick Chick

#6 9 years ago

My top 5 single players are

Sky Jump
Flying Carpet
Abra Ca Dabra
Jacks open
Gulfstream
World Fair gets an honorable mention.

#7 9 years ago

Almost impossible for me to pick only 5, but here goes.

1. Majorettes - Unique and endlessly challenging

2. Slick Chick - Classic and timeless

3. Drop a Card - Surprises me how much I like it

4. Melody - Just a great AAB, love the kickout holes

5. Bowling Queen - Rollover heaven

#8 9 years ago

Slick Chick
Fireball
King of Diamonds
North Star
Cleopatra / Pyramid (EM version)

Honorable Mentions:
Kings and Queens
Surf Side

Slick Chick
Fireball
King of Diamonds
North Star
Cleopatra / Pyramid (EM version)
Honorable Mentions:
Kings and Queens
Surf Side

Cheating, he said single player.

#10 9 years ago

I LOVED my Top Card and regret ever selling it. Had the best rotating "Special" and knocker "thwak" of any game I've had.

#11 9 years ago

Oh he did say single player...Okay here goes...

Slick Chick
King of Diamonds
North Star
Kings and Queens
Knock Out (1950 Gottlieb)

Honorable Mention

Buckaroo
Royal Guard...I love the way it plays but I dislike the theme.

#12 9 years ago
Quoted from Rat_Tomago:

Royal Guard...I love the way it plays but I dislike the theme.

Nice, I had a Royal Guard for awhile. I didn't expect much from it but it surprised me at how fun and challenging it was. Maddeningly addictive.

#13 9 years ago

I'm pretty much a 70's guy so I'm biased (not in order):

* 1975 Gottlieb Abra Ca Dabra
* 1976 Gottlieb Sure Shot
* 1975 Gottlieb Atlantis
* 1977 Gottlieb Jacks Open
* 1962 Williams King Pin

Honorable Mention:

*1973 Gottlieb King Pin

Ken

#14 9 years ago

4 Queens (Bally)
Capt. Card
Spanish Eyes
King Pin
Neptune

#15 9 years ago

1963 Williams Big Daddy
1959 Williams Rocket
1965 Gottlieb Kings & Queens
1960 Gottlieb Flipper
1974 Bally Bon Voyage
1964 Williams Palooka

Oh, is that six? Sorry.

#16 9 years ago

Gold Strike is on my list. (I like the 'sudden death' thrill of the AAB version of this game)
Gulfstream (played it when it came out, was a fan of it back then too!)
Triple Action
Volley
Sky Jump

I tend to be partial to 70s WMS EMs (the fastest games at the time), and drop targets.

#17 9 years ago

Teacher's Pet
Ding Dong
Triple Action
Subway (Crosstown)
Sing Along (Melody)

#18 9 years ago

King of Diamonds - Probably the best of the '60's.
Slick Chick - Great objectives for specials.
North Star - 1 of only 2 '60's with "All Rollovers Special" mode.
Dimension - Nice drop target layout
Flying Carpet - Whether you like it or hate it, it's a good shooter's game.
or
Atlantis - Excellent multiple version playfield design with the right side bagatelle
re-appearing on many other games as well.

#19 9 years ago

Okay, haven't played near as many titles as some of you guys, but...
1) 4 square
2) Atlantis
3) Jacks Open
4) Klondike
5) Flip a Card

Not necessarily in that order.

#20 9 years ago

Ok heres mine

1. Bank a Ball
2. Target Pool
3. Royal Guard
4. GTB Kingpin
5. Cowpoke

#21 9 years ago

From what ive been able to play

Abra Ca Dabra
2001
Atlantis
Jacks Open

Id like to include jungle queen or super spin but i think those are both two player games...

#22 9 years ago

Wow, some of my games being mentioned here (Top Card, Triple Strike, Triple Action, Ding Dong, Royal Guard). I thought I only owned unpopular games...

1. Jacks Open. Still on the lookout
2. River Boat. Only owned it less than a year, just love the game.
3. Top Card. Targets deluxe, as mentioned above, specials heaven and great sounding knocker.
4. Royal Guard. Challenging game. Never get tired of it
5. Bally Surfers. A sentimental choice, my first game, still own it 43 years later. Extremely fast play and great art.

#23 9 years ago

Not so familiar with Gottlieb single players:

1. Gigi - is the second pinball machine I ever bought (1980), difficult to master especially when you're use to the longer flippers, or zipper flippers.
Sold the machine in 1981 and found it back again in 2000, since that time the only one that "lasted"in my arcade.

2. Gulfstream - love the mix of extra balls and free games, fast game, best thing - getting 1,3,7 and 9 and game setting on three extra balls.

3. Post Time - not because it's such a great game, but had a very liberal setting, making it possible to play for at least 15 minutes a game.

4. Cue-T - yes, another Williams, our local dealer imported a lot of Williams, love the bumper between the flippers.

5. Triple Action - better game then the 4-player version Star Pool, especially carrying over the dropped targets from ball to ball.

Kings and Queens
Atlantis
Abra Ca Dabra
King of Diamonds
Jacks Open

Dimension and El Dorado should be in there too but only 5

#25 9 years ago

In no particular order.
1. Diamond Jack
2. Subway
3. Flipper Pool
4. Gold Strike
5. Jacks Open

#26 9 years ago

No particular order. Any list without Volley on it is incorrect.

2001
Volley
C37
Flip a Card
Atlantis

#27 9 years ago

Jacks Open... Hit 3 of the 4 top lanes, then keep hitting drop targets. Doesn't sound all that skillful but it really is on this table. The targets are down low enough to plan the ball's trajectory off a hit, and the outlane nudge saves are awesome.

2001... Hit the vertical drop target banks, to make it to the top of the playfield. Many ways to fail... Itty bitty flippers, but a great tournament game, with inlanes.

North Star... Beautiful artwork and gameplay.

4 Square... A "target shooting" game with itty bitty flippers and inlanes. Tough! Could never roll this one over...

I would have a lot of fun playing this lineup.

#28 9 years ago

Spanish Eyes
Palace Guard (can't believe the love this and Royal Guard are getting now)
Klondike
Diamond Jack
WMS King Pin

Rat - love Surf Side. Surf Side and CC Gun Smoke are the two games from my childhood that have eluded me through the years. I did own a Surf Side for a few weeks in the '80's - but it was too rough to keep and had a repainted cabinet. There was no thought of cabinet stencils and playfield touch ups and clears then.

#29 9 years ago
Quoted from John_I:

2001
Volley
C37
Flip a Card
Atlantis

I agree volley is one of the top 3" wedgeheads most people don't give it a chance due to the art
I think that 2" & 3" flippers play so much different that 2 lists must be made IMO

my list this week
--2" flippers
star jet
4 square/ astro
2001
bank a ball
north star
---3" flippers
el dorado
atlantis
abra ca dabra
Volley
jacks open

#30 9 years ago

My list is subject to weekly change! In no particular order -

Gigi
Crosstown
Ice Review
Hit the Deck ( my favorite 70's game )
Mystic Marvel ( my favorite 50's game )

3 weeks later
#31 9 years ago
Quoted from John_I:

You are correct.

Haven't played them all (who has?), but I'd say...in no particular order...

Jack's Open
Volley
Atlantis

Pro Pool
Team One
image-563.jpgimage-563.jpg

Yes, Pro Pool can hold it's own.

#32 9 years ago

Since I only have 5 single players, here they are:

King of Diamonds (My current favorite)
Atlantis (Most recent addition. Becoming my new favorite)
Sure Shot (Like the moving 'Special' lights)
Buccaneer (My first game)
World Series (Gtb 1972 AAB)

Looks like KoD and Atlantis show up on favorite lists quite a bit. Glad to have both.

Steve

That's a tough one to come up with only 5...

5. Sky Jump
4. K&Q
3. Slick Chick
2. Gtb King Pin
1. Gulfstream

Don,
Do you have a "Sky Jump"? I'm still looking for a nice "Free Fall".

#35 9 years ago

2001
Abracadabra
Golden Arrow
Rock Star
Target Pool

#36 9 years ago
Quoted from jrpinball:

Don,

Nope, I do not... I've passed on a bunch of average to terrible Sky Jumps in my neck of the woods; I'm holding out for that really rare example with a great P/F... there's got to be some out there, right???

#37 9 years ago

Strange World (Gottlieb)
Blue Chip (Williams)
Baseball / Batter Up (Gottlieb)
Atlantis (Gottlieb)
Neptune / Hit the Deck (Gottlieb)

#38 9 years ago

I put Sky Jump on my list earlier, but tentatively since it was new to me. After playing it more it's definitely a great game, really glad I picked it up.

#39 9 years ago
Quoted from Dono:

"SJ"/"FF" have to be two of the toughest games to find in all around nice condition. I have a "FF" with a badly flaked BG, and severly planked PF, but strangly the underside components of the playfield look like brand new!

#40 9 years ago

My Sky Jump has a little planking on the playfield, and a couple tiny pricks in the backglass, but is otherwise in pretty nice shape.

I don't think it's a forever keeper for me, but I'm really enjoying it until another wedgehead I want more comes along that I'll swap it for.

#41 9 years ago

I had a sky jump with a great pf but a bad bg and cab. it is a great game I should of never sold it. never will find one with a nicer pf. shay does the bg

ebay.com link: SKY JUMP PINBALL MACHINE COOL LOOKING GOTTLIEB WEDGEHEAD

Don, a bit of a road trip for you, but it's doable!

#43 9 years ago
Quoted from Aurich:

a couple tiny pricks

You need to use the self tilt feature.

#44 9 years ago

Sky Jump is at the top of my list. It's all about lining up the 10x with the lit drop target. It really sets it apart. I had no idea what to expect when I bought mine, as I'd never played it before. It will never leave my collection unless I find a better example.

My top 5:
1. Sky Jump
2. Pin up/king pin
3. Abra Ca Dabra
4. Atlantis
5. El Dorado

#45 9 years ago
