I'm in the mood for some Halloween/spooky/scary movies.

I've probably seen most of the mainstream classics of the 70s through early 2000's at this point, though I haven't really kept up too much on films that have come out in the last few years.

What are some more recent and/or somewhat obscure films that get your thumbs up? Or some of the classics that you keep coming back to?

From this year I liked Ready Or Not and Crawl, although the latter is more of a creature feature than horror. Ready Or Not took the simple formula of sticking a girl somewhere and putting her through hell and had a lot of fun with it.

The first episode of Creepshow was pretty good. Watched that last night.

Devils Rejects is great. I’ve also always thought The Ring was great.

Just watched that- it’s 2
Stories. The first one is good and is a remake of the 2nd story in the first Creepshow movie - we were
Watching it, and my wife, who is barely awake enough to pay attention, goes “is this the one where he turns to fungus?” And yep, it was.!

I liked the doll one more actually -
Both were pretty good.

Devils Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses...The Devil's 3 (third in the trilogy) is coming out soon. Unfortunately, Sid Haig was sick and his part greatly reduced and he recently passed.

Another one that's not so main stream....Pieces. The ending is fantastic.

And Happy Birthday to Me.

Oh, and for pin tie ins (since we did RZ), watch Alice Cooper's The Prince of Darkness.

#20 4 years ago

Us was really fantastic. I actually liked it a lot more than Get Out which got more buzz. Really creepy, great performances, very inventive.

It’s a comedy mockumentary about vampires from the flight of the conchords guys, not strictly horror but lots of horror elements and and hilarious.

Not much into horror flicks, but I'll go for Cabin in the Woods. But if "scary" doesn't matter, than the original Scary Movie or Nightmare Before Christmas for originality.

This one is not for the faint of heart. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be like how the hell was this even made??! Still a go to staple.

I'm a HUGE horror fan. So much so that [shamelessplug] I cohost a weekly horror podcast that mostly covers horror movies, but occasionally delves into conventions and other genre-related stuff (we talk horror-themed pinball games sometimes, too). If that sounds like something you may be interested in, and you're not offended by semi-frequent f-bombs, please check us out! We're called The Swearwolves, and we're on Apple/iTunes, Android, Stitcher, Podbean, etc. Pretty much everywhere podcasts are available. You can also stream our episodes directly from our website: www.theswearwolves.com. New episodes every Monday at 12am EST. [/shamelessplug]

My all-time favorite horror movie is probably John Carpenter's The Thing. I met a bunch of the cast members a couple of years ago, and had them sign Petri dishes, like in the blood test scene:

TheThingDishes1 (resized).jpgTheThingDishes1 (resized).jpg

TheThingDishes2 (resized).jpgTheThingDishes2 (resized).jpg

TheThingPosterAndDishes (resized).jpgTheThingPosterAndDishes (resized).jpg

One movie that hasn't been mentioned yet that I would say is highly underrated is Night of the Creeps!

NightOfTheCreeps (resized).jpgNightOfTheCreeps (resized).jpg

I met pretty much the whole cast (and the director) at a convention a couple of months ago, and they signed that poster for me. I even hung out and had some beers with the guys who played JC and Brad. Oh, and I splurged for a "photo op" (which I almost never do) with Tom Atkins, Jason Lively, and Jill Whitlow in costume. It was a blast!

Those petri dishes are genius!! Did you ask Keith David if Childs is a Thing?

The great underrated follow up to Creeps is “Monster Squad”, which is a sequel-in-spirit to House of Frankenstein - with kids!

Also I wanted to mention “You’re Next” and “The Strangers”, and the French movie which inspired it “Ils” (aka “Them”)

And the miniseries Behind the Walls (on Shudder) is also brilliant

Some recent horror films I thought were really well made.

Thanks! To be honest, I can't really remember if I asked Keith about it, but he was super stoked about signing the petri dish. He was extremely cool.

Monster Squad is awesome, and my podcast borrowed its tagline from that movie (our tagline is "A horror podcast... with nards."). I'd love to see Fred Dekker get back into directing and do another horror-comedy.

You're Next was a lot of fun. I haven't seen The Strangers yet.

I'm planning to watch the first episode of Creepshow on Shudder today.

Great movie. On my mount Rushmore of horror comedies. Dale and tucker versus Evil is very funny. A lesser known comedy and horror is Bigfoot the movie. Hilarious. Especially if you've lived in the Cleveland Pittsburgh area. Bubba the redneck werewolf I'd also amusing.

I am hearing a new Joe Bob special is coming in October

Another really fun horror comedy mockumentary is Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.

Good fun scary obscure movie I like is The Cube:

If you want to be actually scared, watch The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. My wife wanted me to watch it so I did. Great acting, great directing, good story. But now I wake up in the middle of the night and see the Bent Neck Lady. That show is intense. I watched most of it during the daytime, and made sure to stand against a wall so no one could sneak up on me.

#42 4 years ago

Haunting of Hill House was a fresh breath of air in a world of stale banality.

Evil Dead Trilogy, Hocus Pocus, and Trick R' Treat are staples around this year for me. Oculus deserves an honorable mention too.

We like some humor mixed in...

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark
Elvira's Haunted Hills
Van Helsing
Hansel and Gretel
Frighteners
Sleepy Hollow - with Johnny Depp
Corpse Bride

And the original Halloween - the 4K Version looks great!

Phantasm.

And another vote for Evil Dead flicks.

Lots of fantastic choices above. I’d like to add 2 more, albeit semi obscure. These are watched every year by us out of tradition:

Kiss fans can certainly appreciate the 1976 classic TV special with Paul Lynde.

1985 TV The Midnight Hour is family friendly fun we have enjoyed for 34 years now.
