Working on Bally Wizard! Flip Flags giving me grief. Wade Krause playfield, was working great. I’ve heard the Flip Flags can be a little touchy.

Williams Wild Card. Last Williams EM single player? Covid restore, I should have gotten to this about 3 years ago. Magic Erasure and keylines, new posts and buff anything metal. Bottom side clean and test, plus tons of coil sleeves. Coin door completely stripped by operator before being sold off route. I’ll wire up lights for the coin entry plates. Before photos.

Some after photos of Williams Wild Card. Really cleaned up nicely.

Time to get Bally Black Jack EM done, except I started “improving” an already done Williams Super Star.

Williams Super Star needed a new ring set and cosmetic attention. Here is the finished product. I had hoped to start Bally Black Jack EM restoration after Super Star, but now Rancho has a start problem.

Quoted from EJS:

How do you like your superstar? I’m hot and cold about mine but it’s a fast player for the era so I’m leaning towards keeping mine.

I think Super Star is a very under rated game. It is very difficult to find a nice one, but yes, it plays very quick.

Picked this up last weekend. Cleaned all the score reels. Had to take a Dremel to all the drop targets to get them to score. All 4 sling switches removed, straightened, contacts cleaned, reinstalled and gapped. Extra ball fixed target at the horseshoe missing and replaced. Had to drill the rivets out to remove the old target. Surprisingly had suitable screws, nuts, and washers to reinstall fixed target on hand. Smoke tested and all functions work as designed. Playfield polish, key line touch up and reassembly to go.

Black Jack EM back on its legs and in the restoration position. It runs and everything works, just a tad gummy. BGResto backglass ready to install, but the playfield needs a top and bottom overhaul and restoration. Appears to be HUO with 20k plays and a very restorable but filthy playfield. Second to last Bally EM made, somewhat scarce at 120 made, but I found it on Marketplace with no takers after a month. Should clean up well.

Black Jack is now number 1 in the shop. Had to clear up some issues on other games before I could start on this one again. Thanks to Larry in Olympia for his help with the other games.

We had everything working on this game then the “Winner” horn stopped working. It is the same as the “Over the Top” horn on some of the last Bally EM games. I did find a used Bally horn replacement, but the 3-figure price, while justified, left me looking for alternatives. Then I remembered my old Bally Money Honey slot machine had a bell for each “Winner”. So I started looking for a 6 vac bell and found one for $14. I think the bell is more appropriate for a winner than a horn. I will photograph the bell after I get it installed.

Here is a photo or two of the shop job starting. I think the playfield will clean up.

Please post a video of some gameplay / tutorial once you have it dialed in, along with winner bell/horn sounding.
I obtained mine from some old retired couple in Arkansas off of eBay, if I remember correctly,
but never got the time to get it up and working.

Hi Tom,

Will do. I blindly inquired about buying your Black Jack a few years ago...
Everything works on mine now. That is the way I start all my shop jobs or restorations. My hope is that it is not too easy to win extra balls or free games.

Quoted from Vic_Camp:

Is your Black Jack a Four player or two player? Looks like there were only 120 two players manufactured?

Hi Vic,

I love you collection. You are correct, this is the 2-player EM version of the 4-player solid state game. I have a new BGResto backglass ready to install. Also came with the original EM manual and schematic, schematic is my current record holder at about 25 feet long. My research also indicates 120 manufactured.

I got the “Winner” bell installed today in place of the “Over the Top” horn the factory installed which is triggered by a player win vs dealer win in a black jack hand. I like the bell much better than the horn for a winning hand. Fitted on the side panel where the horn used to reside. $15 well spent for the bell.

Pulled the bumpers off and found the previous owners ham-fisted attempt to remove the Mylar caused more damage than I had initially anticipated. Feck! Damage under bumpers I usually cover with properly colored stick on platters. I think on this game that solution would cover too much artwork.

Photo summary of Bally Black Jack shop/restoration job with before and after photos. Looks like previous owner tried to remove bumper Mylar with a screwdriver. My efforts make it look better but not perfect. Replaced Bally “Over the Top” style buzzer with a bell to more appropriately indicate a Player vs Dealer black jack “Winner”. Now I have to move a few games to place it chronological order with the other Bally games…

Bally Black Jack finally in it’s chronological place. Player 2 100,000 reset relay needed cleaning and adjustment. Tilt relay would occasionally not kill power to the pf when tilted. Relay obviously out of adjustment when I acquired it visually. That concluded the restoration/shop of this Bally. I had to move and re-level 10 4 player Bally games to slide it home. Waiting on parts for my next project.

I love your EM lineup that also had SS games. Have you thought about doing the GTB variants too?

I do have an EM Joker Poker but I am not a huge fan of that SS/EM Gottlieb era. I probably should have bought my neighbors EM Close Encounters when he offered it, but I passed due to too many machines. Space Walk would definitely interest me but probably not at the price the market would demand.

Bally Black Jack EM fresh from my restoration area into the lineup when the Spade bumper started to intermittently fail to illuminate when the Spade rollover was made. Wire from bumper traced directly to the Spade relay, but would not continuity check across the relay. Fuses, Jones plugs, etcetera checked and rechecked numerous times to no avail. Had to leave the machine unserviced due to work commitments for about 8 weeks. And I needed to step away from it anyway because of my inability to solve a seemingly easy bumper light problem. I was way too frustrated anyway. I took a fresh look today and luckily found a break in the harness I had not noticed in previous repair attempts. Good thing too as I was about to haul it outside and torch the thing. I also just noticed today I put 2 Spade bumper caps on instead of 1 Spade and 1 Club. Oops.

Trying to clear all the discrepancies of games in the collection. This is in anticipation of a playfield delivery from the restorers.

1977 Williams Wild Card
Bumpers would flicker despite new lamp sockets almost too tight to get a bulb into them. Got the bulbs to stay illuminated by scuffing the bulb base and then applying dielectric grease. No more flickering bumpers.
Installed missing beer seal on lockdown bar. Installed 455 flashers from PBR.

1972 Williams Super Star
No apron credit light. Credit unit switch adjustment and new bulb resolved problem.
Installed new side drain pop up rubber. Both fit perfect.

1975 Bally Wizard
2 adjacent pf lights would not illuminate. Not surprising since I installed this Wade Krause pf. I now own a long nose upholstery stapler to tack the braid down on pf swaps so this stuff doesn’t happen. Moved braid to get lights to work again. Doh!

1976 Ball Capt Fantastic
Player unit not stepping properly. 3 ball game would play over 3 players. Cleaned and lubed disc and wipers. 3 ball game now stays on first player.
Intermittent ball in play illumination. Cleaned ball count disc and wipers.
Not awarding or illuminating side drain or drop target special. Adjusted alternator relay.

1975 Gottlieb Atlantis
Intermittent ball in play illumination and occasional game over run on. Cleaned player unit to resolve those issues.

1977 Bally Black Jack
Broken wire in harness found which prevented Spade bumper from illuminating. Gang of 4 suits of cards relays out of adjustment from seeking Spade bumper solution. Going to have to circle back to this one.

Ring sets purchased for most of the games in my collection as the oldest restorations are starting to petrify.

Quoted from phergott:

After 5 months and many distractions, I finally got back on board with my 4MBC. To be honest, the grays are kicking my butt. The other colors weren't as difficult. I've gotta admit that before I started the pop bumper area, I was a little intimadated, but had to remind myself that this is a players+, quality game.
Many thanks to Enaud for sending me some reference pics.

Quoted from phergott:

Finally finished with 4MBC. Pretty cool game-when everything works right. My biggest challenges were the on kicker at the left drain and trying to figure out why the rollover buttons weren't working right. It took a couple of days, but finally figured out on the schematic that the center button switch is normally closed(I had adjusted it open). As for the on kicker, someone had moved the kicker housing up about a half inch. I replaced the coil, coil sleeve, and spring. I then put the housing back to the factory holes. Working great now, but the key to it working well is the rollover switch adjustment. If not adjusted properly, the ball won't eject, and the coil will fry, (as shown in pic).
The only question I have is regarding the slingshot switch gap(that scores points), for the kicker coil. Every once in a while the 10 pt relay sticks when the ball is bouncing around down there.

I’ve got a pretty nice 1974 Gottlieb Top Card that I have never shopped out. I decided today was the day. Photos show pf just after I stripped the top side. Looks pretty good for a game with just over 15,000 games played. Local Seattle game from Music Vend. Pop bumper bodies, skirts, posts, and flippers from PBR, new plastics from Pinball Rescue before they shut down. All the screws and other metal currently in the tumbler with walnut shells and chrome polish. Clean and wax the playfield tomorrow, and when the metal is polished in a day or so, put the game back together.

Bought in 2013, in my storage during 8 years and just finished the restoration to operation of my Drop a Card.
Next step : Paintwork maybe in 8 years !

That would be a pretty easy cabinet repaint with just masking tape.

Gottlieb Top Card continued. I use the built-in playfield rotisserie to get at the underside of the pf. Cut some pipe insulation in half and cover with soft shop towels.
PBR parts order arrived so it was time to install new coil sleeves. The sleeves had never been changed. Cleaned plungers and installed 9 coil sleeves.
Next I had to flip the rotisserie 180 degrees to install bumper acetate pf protectors, bumper bodies and skirts, with the skirt point aimed at the top of the pf. And the bulb sockets. I should have done these steps before I flipped the pf on its back. It would have eliminated 1 pf flip. (I also had to uninstall 1 bumper as the acetate had slipped out.)
Flipped the pf on its back again to connect the bumper bulb sockets. Used a new roll of solder with great results. I always thought my soldering iron wasn’t getting hot enough. Nope, wrong solder.
Before I repopulate the pf I decided to install the glass channel and trim at the top pf arch. Since it is a Gottlieb, all of the top arch hardware is buffed back to a chrome finish, if possible. This finish will last for years and looks great. The problem is I misplaced the top glass channel after I buffed it. I’ll try harder tomorrow to try to find it.

Gottlieb Top Card.
I found the missing playfield trim and installed the top and bottom arches. I also installed a new set of flipper bats and 3/8” flipper rings. Short session due to work tonight.

This game worked perfectly before de-populating. It’s been a few months since I stripped it down for restoration. Fortunately it is my 6th pf replace/restore and my preparation for reinstallation now starts at the de-populating stage of the restore. I hope that helps this time.
Pounding the snubber rails and other wire guides back into place with care. So far the clear coat is holding up. Playfield restored by Las Vegas Playfields.

Wiring harness off the flat cardboard and back on the pf. So far 2 switches have needed adjustment. Easier to do now than later. Usually taped screws to part being removed for easier installation later. Got it wrong on a light bar though. Didn’t look right. If I had used that screw, it would have punched through the pf. I still have hardware from a couple games I parted out pre-internet. I needed some of that hardware tonight. Also bought a long-nose staple gun to hold the tinned braid out of the way. I should have bought one a long time ago. I’m going to have to turn down the air pressure on the gun. Wow!
Looks like I got about 17% of the pf wired and the relay bank tightened down.

1978 Gottlieb Gemini

Installed the rest of the wiring harness and smoke tested it on the game for the first time. Short in upper pf lamp socket resolved, and pf lights are back to normal brightness.
I begin all my restorations with a working game, especially pf swaps and restorations, as a bookmark of sorts to see where I messed up. This game started and worked first time. All functions worked except white star. Extra ball and special illuminate, but special does not award replay. I suspect it is white star relay in relay bank.

Playfield rails and upper arch installed.

Resolved last two discrepancies. White Star was a poor light socket connection, and Special not awarding replay was simple operator error. With game running 100%, I repopulated the playfield and ran a few test games. The bumpers were sluggish at best prior to tear down. I usually don’t replace coils, only sleeves. But this time I decided to try Pinball Resource Yellow Dot bumper coils. Huge improvement and overall, the game plays fast.
After all this I noticed that the number match was not illuminating at end of game. Cleaned the 00-90 pcb’s and contacts with no result. I’ll try the player unit tomorrow. Restoration, with the exception of the match problem, complete.

(And Thanks to kangourou for the Gottlieb-never-made-it playfield plastic.)

Update: Match fixed with PBR lamp socket cleaner and 10 new lamps.

I just shopped out Bally 4 Million B.C. I’ve shopped out Williams Pat Hand, Spanish Eyes and Klondike in the past few weeks.
I am shopping out machines that I have restored 20+years ago. They all played okay, but the rings were turning to dust. Repairing stripped screw holes, polishing metal, and cleaning and waxing playfields.
Bally Nip It is next.

1965 Gottlieb Buckaroo. Restoration done about 15 years ago. It was time to shop it out. Stripped, cleaned, ringed and waxed. All metal tumbled or buffed. I thought I would try something new so I switched from 5 ball to 3 balls per play.

1965 Gottlieb Buckaroo. Too late to test Buckaroo until today on 3 ball play. The changes from 5 ball is interesting. At the top making A spots C and making B spots D. Also at the start of the game both numbers displayed on the roto are spotted. I also replaced 2 bulbs in the backglass with LED’s. The “tilt” light and the “over”light in “game over” were changed to LED to increase legibility. I am quite pleased with result. And I cleaned the back side of the backglass because it was a little filmy.
Also Buckaroo and the Central Park next to it are 2 of the cabinets I repainted back to original before there were stencils.

Ooh. That's a nice one! All original?

I had the cabinet repainted back to original with Pimp stencils, bumper bodies, skirts, and caps from Pinball Resource, and I replaced the center collect bonus plastic with one from Pinball Rescue. This game was very nice to start with. Purchased in Nampa, Idaho circa 1993.

Taking a break from shopping out games to troubleshoot 2 Gottlieb multi-players. First up is Joker Poker. Left pop bumper would not consistently score. I have looked at this before to try to solve the problem with no joy. This time I noticed the end of stroke switch was catching sometimes at the bottom of the bumper stroke. The solution was to loosen the stack and pull the top end of stroke switch out of the bumper path. Now it works perfect again.
Next up is Gemini. 100k would not illuminate when achieved with either player. Cleaned both light sockets, checked switches on 10k score reels, made adjustments to those, but still not working. Would illuminate with manually activating J1 & J2 relays. The solution was as simple as cleaning both score reels jones plugs.

1973 Bally Monte Carlo. Coin door reinstalled after hinge and trim polishing. Operator installed lockbar removed leaving four holes in the front. I filled the holes with buffed out carriage bolts.

1975 Gottlieb Atlantis. Great playfield and backglass. The rest of the game is not so great. I don’t have time to paint the cabinet but I thought I could fit the new front coin door and other hardware until I do have time. My intention was to just polish and install new rings but on closer inspection the petrified Coca Cola/beer combination on the front of the cabinet hardware had to be dealt with now. Evaporust-ing the hardware but put the door, striker plate, and coin entry on for now. More to follow.

Quoted from Vintage-Pinball:

Just finishing off a '64 WMS River Boat. This has had its cabinet restored, playfield areas that were badly worn around the sunken card lamp inserts repaired and repainted and the whole playfield clearcoated and then all new pop bumpers, etc fitted. Might also buy a Bgresto glass for it too, if the owner thinks it fit. Note too that I deliberately left some of th minor playfield wear 'as-is' so that it retains some of its originality. The owner didnt want it looking factory fresh, more a nice looking playfield with just some age related marks.
I've just got to clean the cab of its adhesive reside left from the stencils and a fine tune here and a few new lamp sockets here and there and it's ready to go home.

1975 Bally Wizard!
1978 Gottlieb Joker Poker
1977 Gottlieb Centigrade 37

On the Wizard, the flippers have always been too noisy. Read a post somewhere which suggested noise may be caused by plunger not hitting coil stop. I cut two notches in the flipper link to accommodate the return spring when compressed or when holding the flipper button down. Problem finally resolved after many years. My hat is off to the poster that suggested what the problem may be because I had tried everything.

Joker Poker had a rough single chute coin door. I found another EM door in much better shape. I had hoped for plug and play, but no joy. Switched the wiring harness over to the new door and added an additional light socket to illuminate both coin entries. Looks much better now.

Centigrade 37 had a coin return door jammed in the up position. Removed the coin return trough and removed the flap for buffing. One side of the spot welded coin return area was tweaked and bent back to allow the coin return flap to operate as designed.

The Joker Poker cabinet was restored by the previous owner. The worst part of the game was the coin door. Easy, but time consuming to switch the door skin.

1977 Bally Mata Hari
This machine apparently started life in an amusement park in Ohio based on some tokens found in the bottom of the game. The coin door was pretty beat up. I bought a door skin a while back and installed it today. Although the cabinet needs a respray, the door has always been an eyesore.
I removed the door and trim. Old lock bar holes were filled with carriage bolts for now, and the trim was cleaned and buffed. 4 screws basically fasten the coin works to the door skin. Left everything loose until all the screws were in, and then tightened down. I think the result is worth the effort.

1972 Bally Little Joe.
Previous owner(s) was kind enough to lube every coil plunger on the playfield. Key-rice’d what a feckin’ gummy mess. All original metal coil sleeves had to be punched out of the coils with a hammer.
Playfield looks okay, should clean up.

Looks nice. I hope you had luck digging those metal sleeves out of the coils... doesn't always result in success for me, especially the early 70s WMS games.

I think it was maybe easier to get them out because they were metal sleeves. I haven’t tested the coils to see if I broke anything but they looked good.

1972 Bally Little Joe
Completely stripped playfield to make room for orbital buffer and polishing compound. Then waxed with the same machine with 2” pads. Plastics cleaned and standoffs polished. Installed new bumper bodies, skirts, and flipper bats. Screw heads tumbled or buffed. New pf glass installed in the Bally frame. I also removed the upper kick out assembly and tossed it in the tumbler. Looks like new but the associated switch was one of two that needed adjusting on the first start after restoration. Now plays 100%.

A friend came over today and picked up his Gottlieb Top Card today, leaving me with an open space. I bought Strange World from another friend and I haven’t run it since I picked it up about 3 years ago. Took me about 5 minutes to get it running and playing again. It’s a nice break from a couple of other problem pinballs in the game room.

1977 Williams Big Deal. The match unit has never worked because of the common armature failure. The plate which gets pulled in by the coil and advances the match unit is the part that fails. Some fellow Pinsider’s had the parts I needed to make the repair. I bought a working unit from a EM Hot Tip and installed my pcb’s from Big Deal. Took a little bit of adjustments and cleaning, but now it works perfect. My only game without a working match unit was almost too much to bear. Fixed now thanks to Pinside and Pinsider’s.

Quoted from John_in_NC:

Pimps stencils are great but I can’t seem to part with the same money I buy most my projects at. I make mine with various methods, I’ll trace original pattern on clear plastic (even painted over cabs still reveal that once stripped a bit) for free form patterns like El dorado or quick draw, I’ll create stincils with the plastic by cutting it and tac spray. For geometric patterns I’ll just use tape and paper.

1977 Williams Wild Card. Wood screw type mini-post kept pulling out of the playfield despite glue and toothpick repair method. It would have eventually stopped the spinner from rotating. Solution? Drill through the playfield at the old mini-post site then drill a slightly larger hole on the bottom to accommodate a tee-nut. Mount the tee-nut with a drift punch and install a threaded mini-post in from the top. Not bulletproof but works well and should last a long time.

1972 Bally Fireball
When I restored this 20+years ago I had to install new captive ball plastics. (Thanks Herb!) This required drilling out a lot of the plastics posts for the new captive ball plastics. It was time for a wax and a new set of rings. I was reluctant to do this because getting all the loose posts to line up was tough last time I did this. The old rings were ABC and still had some stretch to them! New rings installed after waxing the playfield. Plays like it should again.

1977 Bally Evel Knievel
New rings and a fluff and buff. Quite a bit more lively.
The lower center target should be red. I have the part but no time to install it today. That target when hit spots S-U-P-E-R and awards a replay when SUPER is completed. On some games that is the only shot I try for. Makes for a pretty short game because the ball almost always drains unless it’s a direct hit.

1976 Bally Old Chicago
Lower kick out bonus hole not working. No bonus and ball stuck in saucer. This had happened before and I remember the repair was on the lower relay board. I thought it had to be a normally closed switch and the schematic showed it on the 5000 relay. Cleaning the switch on the kick out itself did nothing. Cleaning the normally closed switch on the 5000 relay fixed the problem.
1971 Bally 4 Million B.C.
Droopy left flipper repaired by tightening the set screws. New problem with this game is the red, green, and blue skill shot to light the bumpers are not resetting between balls and at end of game. Sometimes 2 of the 3 will reset leaving 2 or 3 of the bumpers lit instead of extinguishing between balls. I’m not sure how to fix this one.
1977 Bally Black Jack
Top lanes illuminate bumpers. Very simple circuit and relays that would not stay fixed. Cleaned and adjusted contacts to repair the bumper light problem only to have it fail again the next day. And the next day, etcetera. I finally noticed some sort of greasy lube appeared to be sprayed over those 4 relays. Used a spray-on degreaser several times on the relays and contacts, cleaned and burnished the points. Repair has been bulletproof for a couple months.

Bally Nip It Bonus/Ball Count
End of ball bonus and ball count not working. Game would not award bonus and not step up to the next ball or end game. I had fixed this problem before without knowing how I fixed it. My previous repair lasted about 2 weeks until it stopped working correctly.
Solution was found on the lowest arm of the 3 arms on the bonus unit. Adjustment was good so I cleaned the wiper arm and disc contact. Still functioning properly after about 20 test games.

Quoted from DRDAVE:

Picked up this very rare gem a year ago and just getting to it now. Bally Black Jack EM.
Cleaning up really nicely. BG was trashed so have a BG resto ready to install into it once I am done with the playfield.
The thing I do like better on the SS version is the saucer sound effect when you beat the dealer.
On the SS when going into the saucer, it gives a 1,2,3,4 note 3 times then scores.
The EM just sounds that annoying "Over the Top" buzzer that sounds like your laundry is done. I clipped the wire going to that buzzer
for now. Would love some ideas on what to install for a sound effect or light effect instead for this clipped wire to drive.
Anything is better than that buzzer.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

I have the same game and the “Over The Top” Bally buzzer for each “Winner” was too much to take. It is not an appropriate indication of anything but an Over The Top score on the Bally games I had played up until Black Jack. For my solution I found a 6 volt bell and made some modifications to splice it in to the existing Black Jack wiring harness. Now each Winner sounds similar to an old Bally EM Money Honey slot machine jackpot. The photo shows the bell in the old buzzer position with no mods but a couple screw holes just prior to final installation.

Quoted from atpcfiaim:

I have the same game and the “Over The Top” Bally buzzer for each “Winner” was too much to take. It is not an appropriate indication of anything but an Over The Top score on the Bally games I had played up until Black Jack. For my solution I found a 6 volt bell and made some modifications to splice it in to the existing Black Jack wiring harness. Here is the bell I used from Amazon. Cover was removed to allow access to mounting holes. 2 buzzer wires from the harness attach to the wires from the bell unit after removing the banana plugs on the bell.

1972 Williams Super Star
I installed some orange Comet 2-headed monsters to illuminate both sides of the 1-5 orange button rollovers. I liked the look but the leds showed how dirty the buttons were. Removed them from the game and soaked them in household degreaser inside an ultrasonic cleaner for about 30 minutes. Looks good now.

1977 Bally Night Rider
I had wondered why the bumper caps had “When Lit” on them until I saw a Night Rider set on 5 ball. My games are all on 3 ball. As soon as I unplugged the 3 or 5 from the 3 side one bumper, one spinner, and one ball return lane went dark. Exactly what I wanted except I wanted it 3 ball play. I was able to “insulate” one pin on the jones plug to get this alternator function to work on 3 ball. Looks cool and makes the game a little bit more difficult.

1977 Gottlieb Centigrade 37
Match feature not working. This occurred after I explained what a match feature was to a novice player. He matched, no replay. Of course. Started with cleaning the FS 00-90 relay followed by the pcb on the tens score reel. Still no joy. Cleaned all the male jones plugs and tightened the female sides. Cleaned the related score motor switches. Still not working. I thought I had checked the gaps on the O relay. Apparently not as the switch pair related to the match feature were gapped too far apart to make. Doh! Easy repair in the end.
I needed a little help to figure out the next problem. Scoring a special would restart the game. Turns out I had a short on one credit reel switch pair. Special now awards a replay and does not start a new game. All credit for this repair to our friend in Vancouver. Much appreciated.

1977 Bally Night Rider
Took a flyer on some apron stickers from eBay. The original paint was good overall but thin where the stickers were installed. I didn’t bother to repaint the whole apron, just stuck the stickers on. Big improvement.
1977 Bally Black Jack.
Somehow the shooter rod got bent resulting in poor consistency from ball to ball with the top of playfield skill shot. I tried to straighten the old one with heat and a hammer. No luck there. Fortunately a friend had a spare. Works perfect.
1977 Bally Evel Knievel
The lower center target was broken when I bought the game. I replaced it with a white target which was incorrect. I’ve had the proper red target for a while and found time today to install it.
I also changed the high score replay threshold. Usually not a problem but the wire pulled out of the plug. I used two sets of locking forceps to hold the wire and plug in place while I soldered the wire back in. The pulled wire turned a two minute job into a twenty minute repair.

1977 Williams Hot Tip

Game would allow a maximum of 2 players. 1 and 2 player worked fine. Could not select a 3 or 4 player game. This did not surprise me as the game was wired incorrectly at the factory, allowing 1 horseshoe to credit horseshoe 2 and 3 to advance with each each turn of the score motor, whether you earned another horseshoe or not. It made the game way too easy to win replays and extra balls. The high score feature was also cranked up to 570,000 on a 3 ball game. Thanks to my friend Larry for finding the incorrectly wired switches on the score motor to fix the over-awarding of the horseshoes
I suspect the ridiculous high score award and limiting the game to a maximum of 2 players was a response to try to get the game to earn money. I’m just guessing but it makes sense the original operator made these adjustments.
Since the game was malfunctioning it was time to open the manual and schematic. First stop on the schematic was the lamp section to see what unit lit the lamps on player 3 and 4. This turned out to be the coin unit. Back to the manual to see which unit is the coin unit since a few mechanism identifying labels were missing. Found a normally closed switch pair pointing to the ground, clearly not where it should be. Solution? Adjust NC switches to only open after player 4 was selected, instead of the switches opening incorrectly after the player 2 was selected. Now I have a 4 player game again.

Sent out this playfield for restoration as it was beyond my capabilities to restore it. The entire playfield was planked and the inserts were loose and sunken. I thought I was ready with the parts cleaned, tumbled, re-sleeved and ready to reinstall. Not quite yet. Thanks to Tim and the crew at Las Vegas Playfields for the transformation. They do very nice work.

1977 Williams Wild Card

Match not awarding replay. I had gone through the 00-90 unit previously and it appeared to be cleaned and functional. Inspected 10’s unit and found one of the horseshoe contacts not making contact with the pcb. Took the unit apart and adjusted the horseshoe contacts. Reassembled unit and match still not awarding replays. Went down a few dead ends on the schematic until I came back to the 10’s unit. I must have knocked the horseshoe out of alignment when I reassembled the unit. Repaired the match while the 10’s unit was assembled with a switch adjuster.

1977 Williams Lucky Seven

Restored playfield wiring harness reinstall. I managed to knock two wires off their lugs and chewed up a section of ground braid during disassembly or storage. Lots of photos taken so recovery should be easy.
I’ve done a few other playfield swaps and was always let down by my inability to neatly clamp down the ground braid. I bought a long nose pneumatic stapler from Amazon to tighten up and short circuit proof my harness installs. This pf about 10% complete.

Finished up the underside of the playfield tonight. The new pneumatic stapler is great for keeping the ground braid away from from the other side of the electrical circuit but I was hoping it would improve the underside aesthetics better than it did. I guess I’ll have to practice more on the next of swap. The good news is that when I plugged in the pf it lit up and started a game with no smoke, fire, or blown fuses. All the pf functions operate as designed, special, extra ball, bonus, double bonus, and all pf switches, bumpers, and targets. While the step up side of the pf functions seem okay, I was unable to test the step down functions as the outhole switch is not operational at this time. Also, when the pf is lowered from the service position the 10 point relay pulls in. Of course everything looks okay so I got the easy part of the diagnostic out of the way. I’ll start the hunt to get the rest going tomorrow.

Visual inspection failed to find source of 10 point relay short. Still no outhole functionality except at game start. I do have a copy of the schematic but a copy of the manual, if there is one, would be handy right now. I have not referenced the schematic yet and will try to make do with the manual from Hot Tip as it is a similar release date game. Playfield lighting installed as a test. Depending on the location I am using the following bulbs: 44, 47, 51, and 55. Installed the outhole coil assembly and lower apron to protect the playfield better while in the service position.

Outhole functionality restored. I noticed when installing the outhole switch the tension spring was contacting the opposite switch leaf. Adjusted the pair so it would not make contact then added a fish paper insulator which somehow rendered the switch inoperative. Diagnosed by shorting the switches across the lugs after the first ball was played with a point file. All game functions now operational.
I am still unable to trace the 10 point short. I’ll have to pick it up again tomorrow.

Stuck 10 point switch found under right slingshot. This resolves the last of the reassembly problems for now. All functions now working 100%.

Starting to install plastics after straightening with heat gun. Unfortunately I broke a post fastening screw while tightening up one of the plastics. I tried to drill out the broken piece with no joy. I also managed to install the top arch and get it screwed down, which took a surprising amount of time. Spinner installed as well.

1978 Gottlieb Strange World

I started a playfield swap on this game as the original had “paid the rent”. Strong playing Canadian export machine appears to have never been shopped out with the exception of the rings and the flipper bats. Wiring harness removed with no problem and repopulation has begun on a beautiful Wade Krause playfield. Some photos of the old pf.

Just a couple items left on the punch list. I like the apron light to illuminate when a replay is awarded. Replaced bulb in apron after adjusting credit unit switches. Also removed a free play jumper and adjusted credit unit switches to do the same thing as the jumper.
Match unit not awarding replay. Previously cleaned and adjusted 00-90 unit. Cleaned 10’s score reels horse shoe contacts to repair problem.
Slingshot switches not pulsing 10 point relay. I gapped these before I installed the playfield in the cabinet? Fixed now.
Game still plays pretty tight but is starting to loosen up and play faster. Time to push it into the Williams row.

Quoted from MikeO:

How is it for game play?

It is pretty early in the post-restoration process but I think once it loosens up after a couple hundred plays it will play Williams fast. It is already showing signs of that after about 30 plays. I’m still tweaking and adjusting things like flipper angle and slingshot switches to optimize gameplay. Still have LIB/CONS adjustments to consider as well as 5 ball rules on 3 ball game.

Cabinet respray complete.
I needed to increase the difficulty of lighting Special. I used some 5 ball settings on a 3 ball game by insulating some male ends of the 3-5 ball jones plug. On a 3 ball game the 2 or 3 rollovers awards 2 and 3. On a 5 ball game each rollover must be achieved individually. I might have to tweak this a little more to dial back the difficulty.

Finally realized previous owner had sprayed some sort of “lubricant” over those relays. Used a degreaser to remove the unneeded lube. Worked well for about a year before the same problem reared it’s greasy head. Spray degreaser to the rescue again. Works good for now.

1965 Gottlieb Buckaroo

I grew up with 5 ball games but I have all mine set to 3 ball so I can crank up the difficulty with easy to reverse mods to the 3-5 ball jones plug. No mods to Buckaroo and Central Park but I did switch them to 3 ball play.
I removed 2 balls from those games a switched the jones plug to 3 ball from 5 ball. Worked great with Central Park, adding a couple advances toward special. Buckaroo started out great, now not so much.
Buckaroo spots the 2 numbers indicated on the roto to start the game on 3 ball play. This used to work great but now it only works about 30% of the time. It also awards 50 points incorrectly at the start of the game. I have cleaned all the jones plugs on the game. I have removed the roto and cleaned the contacts, realigned the roto with no result. But I also can’t figure out how it spots or reads the roto at the beginning of the game. It’s apparently magic. I do have the schematic but not the “manual”. Could I get a little help with this one?

SOLVED! Steve got me pointed in the right direction with this. Turned out score motor switch 3B somehow got positioned to closed at all times pulling in the 50 point relay on start. Opened up the gap on 3B and no more 50 points on start.

Quoted from Mathazar:

atpcfiaim - you have a crazy beautiful EM collection. You don't see many EM versions of Black Jack, either - that one is gorgeous.

Thank you, Sir.

1978 Gottlieb Gemini

Replay unit would decrement ALL credits on the credit wheel instead of just 1 credit on game start. I purchased this game out of Florida and it must have been operated by the beach based on the amount of rust on the mechanisms, with the credit unit no exception. While the unit’s themselves all look okay, the springs are all rusty and one broke on the credit unit. Quick check in the 1978 Gottlieb Parts Catalog revealed where the broken spring attached. Fortunately I had one in stock to replace the broken spring. Now credit unit only decrements 1 credit at a time as designed.

1972 Bally Fireball

Zipper Flippers not opening via mushroom bumpers or end of ball in play. Armature that allows flippers to open badly tweaked to compensate for an incorrect, underpowered, presumably in-the-field replacement coil. I did not have a correct coil so I decided to make this one work by tightening up the gap on the mb’s switches and associated relays. Now the flippers open as designed but would not stay closed. Uff Da.
I had to move the underpowered coil within the armature housing back to its previous position which allowed the flippers to stay in the closed position until mb’s or end of ball in play opened them. Now works as designed.

I somehow inverted one of the Pinball Pimp stencils on my Gottlieb Atlantis. I managed to correct my mistake with some help from Jeff and here is the result, before and after.

1972 Bally Fireball. An extra ball would occasionally be sent to the shooter lane. It didn’t matter whether it was ball 1,2, or 3. And the ball would intermittently get stuck between the ball trough and the shooter lane. There are 3 switches in the trough to keep track of the ball in play during multi-ball. I adjusted the trough switch actuators to increase the dwell time on the trough switches. I also found the ball release gate was letting balls into the shooter lane too easily. Readjusted the ball release gate to narrow the passage to the shooter lane. With those 2 adjustments the occasional extra ball problem has been resolved.

Zipper flippers would not stay closed. G31-1800 relay solenoid was installed presumably back in the day on a route repair. Too weak and smaller than the FC-30-1300 so the armature plate was bent to make it work. Found a replacement solenoid with a vendor at the NW Pinball show. Installed new solenoid and straightened the armature plate. Now flippers stay zipped when they are supposed to.

Installed new coin door skins on Bally Capt. Fantastic and Night Rider.

Finished off my third and final cabinet respray for the summer on 1977 Gottlieb Centigrade 37. The other two were Strange World and Atlantis. I had some trouble with the yellow pulling up primer/base coat but I think I can fix that next time with a different brand of paint. The pink color I selected turned out darker than I had hoped. Despite my Earl Scheib-level of cabinet preparation I think they turned out okay. A huge improvement over what they were. Thanks to Jeff at Pinball Pimp stencils for his help on these cabinets.

1971 Williams Doodle Bug. Playfield being stripped in preparation for shipment to restorers. I have not seen brads used to secure the braid. I’m used to seeing staples.

Doodle Bug stripped. I had to cut the brads I couldn’t pull up with a hook on the braid. Lost another ground somewhere on the playfield wiring harness during the transfer from Doodle Bug to storage on an old playfield.

1971 Williams Doodle Bug. 3 of the 4 score reels were yellowed and numbers damaged. Fortunately my friend Larry had some nice ones. Installed those and new coil sleeves yesterday.

1971 Williams Doodle Bug.
Coin door cleaned up well. After 60 or so EM’s, my first triple chute door. Replaced coin return flap. Too pitted for this project. Unfortunately an operator snipped the wires to disable the nickel and dime sides of the door. Fortunately they did not cut the wires for entry illumination. Another mission accomplished while cooling my heels waiting for parts.

1971 Williams Doodle Bug
2 yearbooks, some wax paper, and a heat gun.
That is what I use to flatten playfield plastics. Took 2 rounds of heat to get the long ones flat. Huge improvement and good result.
1972 Williams Super Star
I was getting an intermittent stuck 10 point relay sound. Inspected the relay and found one of the contacts had fallen out of the leaf. Futile attempts to press the contact back onto the leaf failed. Too lazy to use my cordless soldering iron, I found a good leaf in the parts pile and just installed it against the bad leaf with the new contact poking through the bad leaf. Works good now

Bally Night Rider. Game occasionally would exit play and go to game over. Narrowed down the problem to middle pop bumper activation. I inspected the contacts and wiring associated with the bumper to make sure there was no inadvertent contact. Looked okay. The bumpers run through a bridge rectifier with a diode across the bumpers. All other DC component’s operated normally so I replaced the diode with one from the bone yard. Nope. I finally figured out I needed a closer look at the switches, so I took them apart and that is where I found the problem. The bottom switch associated with the bumper spoon was shorting out nicely against the scoring switch below it due to a short fish paper insulator. Installed a longer piece of fish paper. Problem solved.
Also, I used 2 different amperage circuit breakers on this search. These are worth every penny they cost in unblown fuses. These came with spade connectors which I use with long leads and insulated alligator connectors so I can have the breaker next to where I am working and see when it pops.

1971 Bally Four Million B.C. I restored this game about 30 years ago but only recently got around to lighting its heart of darkness at the top of the playfield. I made a wiring harness from spare parts and tapped in to the general illumination harness below the upper shooter lane. Smoke testing, bulb type and placement next.

1976 Gottlieb Surf Champ
The only work I’ve done so far is bring it home. A clapped-out, dry rotted, previously damp Surf Champ. I didn’t notice that the head was from a different game until after I got it home. Fortunately, the guts inside the head were later confirmed to be for a Surf Champ. Stamped as a sample game, but without the original head or sample schematic that is now only a curiosity. Game started and played but needs to be completely tuned up. Playfield should clean up, backglass is almost perfect. Lower apron and coin door are very nice. Cabinet and head will need to be re-glued to build back the structural integrity so head can be acetone stripped and main cabinet skimmed and sanded for a repaint. If the original head was still with the game I would mask off the serial number to preserve it.
