Merry-Go-Round first Gottlieb metal rail. Cabinet was painted over red and white, transformer burned some time back and was Frankensteined back to life. Working on final mechanicals.

Only if the transformer in mine is shot, hopefully it does not come to that.

I have a transformer for it

Quoted from dasvis:

Looking good.
I hate painting cabinets. My Royal Guard project has been stalled for the last couple of years while I get up enough gumption to finish it.

I start with cabinets to get motivated. Been stalled on mechanics as this one had a transformer fire.

Took years but done. It was a mess with about 1/4 of the wiring harness burned due to a transformer fire. Steppers seized due to heavy layers of lithium grease. About 30 loose wires needed re-soldering. I was surprised I was able to get it up without schematics. Just kept at it all day, one problem at a time flushed out.

Quoted from pinwiztom:

I like that from a distance the splatter/webbing is not very noticable, but up close it is apparent enough.
The job of the splatter/webbing is to take ones eye away from possible defects in the paint job or dings in the cabinet woodwork,
not to draw attention to itself; which unfortunately far too many repaint jobs
with amateur application of splatter/webbing tend to do.

Agreed Spatter/splatter is a meant as a details distraction vs attraction. The above job is not bad, I give it high grades for density (not going too heavy, biggest rookie mistake) but the consistency could be a bit better. I have redone a dozen machines and have been 100% happy with the webbing on maybe 2.I was only happy with one of these.

Wade repro on the left. Well restored original on the right.
[quoted image]

I’m getting tired of waiting on Wade to rerun this one. I have a quick draw Playfield that could easily be restored but wanted a new one. If I finish and recover from doing my Cowpoke ground up before he gets them going I may just go for it.

Starting a Cowpoke complete restore:
Playfield: There is a lot of planking requiring extensive touch-ups/insert leveling/clearcoating
Cabinet: Structural repairs, repaint to original, renew hardware, new lockdown endcaps, new Ron Webb Repro backglass
Mechanics: Mechanically it looks to be in great shape, just needs a complete & thorough cleaning adjusting and repairs as required.
I am starting off on this restore in my newly reorganized workshop so I might have a chance of being somewhat efficient. For this one I will attempt to accurately clock the hours I spend. So far 4 hours stripping the playfield to wood and 1st and 2nd pass cleaning.

I had one once, nice machine.

Quoted from Dono:

It's quite nice, I'd say incredibly nice considering its age. No cracks, no crazing, not even at the bottom. A few very small almost unnoticeable scratches.. I'll post a lit up shot once I have the game reassembled; playfield is still on the rotisserie... only thing remaining are minor switch adjustments and lubing the bonus stepper and score motor.

Quoted from Dono:

1947 pre-flipper United Mexico... the game might be a snoozer, but it's a beauty. Too bad United opted out of producing pins after just a handful of flipper games. Would have been interesting to see what they could have done to compete with the big 3. Build quality is outstanding on these machines for the most part. I've enjoyed restoring it, and it's almost ready for me to play the first game since being put to pasture in the late 60s/early 70s.

Looks like the same pattern as spin wheel I did a couple of repaints on. Relatively Easy pattern to replicate.

Quoted from Peruman:

Domino is disassembled. After a thorough vacuuming and wipe-down, I'm working on putting it back together. The cabinet is glued back together, the backbox is getting fixed, and the board where the transformer sits is getting cleaned and sorted out. Cleaning and checking all of the mechs and switches. The backbox board and the playfield will get the same treatment.
Tracing paper has been ordered to make the stencils prior to stripping the cabinet (the paint is flaking off - the wallpaper that this machine was wrapped in did a number on the paint) and re-painting it. I have never done a strip and re-paint so this will be a learning experience. I'm spending alot of time reading about stenciling cabinets. I will have to make my own stencils since they are not available commercially.
Should be fun.

No stencil, I trace the pattern on thick mil clear plastic, use as a guide for painters tape placement. You only need trace one side left or right as the opposite side is a mirror image, just flip it over.

Quoted from Peruman:

Nice! It is the same pattern - I have not done a stencil before. If you don't mind, can I send you a PM with some questions?

Alberto

Working on a Laguna Beach in fair condition. After talking to some of the guys here I have decided to just fix it up instead of a full restore. This is my first pinball machine. I've played these in the 70's lost bunches of money. Still love the game!
I've gotten some great advice and technical support on Pinside.

Quoted from tyking:

Amen.
I am back to restoring the RF after I picked up a Flight 2000, so that I would have a pin that I could play while the RF is down. Wow, going from EM to SS is like going from acoustic to electric, such a different experience. I got side tracked with the F2K fixing a machine gunning flipper (which I first fixed by putting in an EM Bally flipper coil, but then switched out with a proper one After I learned that EM flipper coils in SS games are a bad idea) and a busted spinner gate arm. And I thought the EM schematics were crazy, but the F2K schematics are four times as crazy. But I got my first soldering done on the F2K flipper coil, so now I think I’m ready to go to town on the RF.
I am leveling inserts and cleaning the playfield of the RF to get it ready for touch ups. Since I am going to clear coat it afterward, it is okay for the inserts to slightly cupped or lifted, right? The cupped ones get filled in, and the lifted ones will level out after a few layers of the clear, right? In the pics the first (closest to edge) insert is cupped, the middle is level, and the third (from the outside) is lifted. It is almost imperceptible to the eye, but it can be easily felt by touch.
How do you get the pop bumper off this RF?
john_in_nc: you say you touched up about 75 percent. It looks like you repainted whole blocks of color. I was thinking that I would have to do this as well on the RF, because it would likely not look right if I tried to match color to something off and faded and then tried to feather the touch up into the rest of the block of the same color? So I’m assuming you decide to just repaint entire blocks of color. Do you have a method for making the black boarder lines crisp?
Also, here is a general question on playfield restoration: If you are not going to be restoring anything under the playfield, how do you decide what to leave on the playfield before you do the clear. Take the pop number for example. I could not figure out how to get it off. Maybe if I take it out, I end up with a stripped screw or thread. I don’t have to take it off to do the touch up because there is no touch up necessary near it. Can I leave it on and do the clear coat around it. What about the wire ball guides? I heard those are not easy to reinstall. Shouldn’t I be leaving as much on the playfield as possible?
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

I repaint any color with enough area damage that will require more than a dime size repair. The cowpoke had planking mainly in the yellow bottom half of the playfield, the white was almost brown in places as well. The darker blue was badly worn at the pops and the inserts so that color got the full repaint as well. All hand brush painted. Once all painting is completed it looks pretty ragged due to the brush marks but with a nice thick coat of clear it all flattens out perfectly. The remaining four or five colors only required microscopic touchups. As for raised or cupped inserts You MUST be sure they are secure to even consider not regluing them. Raised inserts always need to be reseated. Minor cupping can be filled. As for depopulating, no question everything must go, side rails included. You can’t sand a playfield smooth if there are objects remaining. To remove pops you take off the cap, there are two screws holding it to the playfield. Then unsolder the light socket and take pop ring nuts from the underside. To keep the black lines crisp after painting a color let it dry and gently clean any areas that encroach on the lines with a X-Acto knife and or wet Q-tip. I just did a BAB all yellow, blue, white and 1/2 the peach and red under pops done on this badly planked playfield. I ended up repainting the flipper area on cowpoke, failing to recreate the wood tone, I opted to cover the ugliness with a brown camouflage (let’s call it corral dirt Brown Waiting for the clear to cure before final sanding and polishing.

Quoted from tyking:

Thanks john_in_nc, is that like the effect of Krylon Triple Thick on backglass, where a thick coat gets absorbed into and softens up the paint? So you don’t sand down the brush bristle unevenness, and just let the clear coat even it out?

It doesn’t mix it merely smooths out the reflection of the uneven brush texture. Looks perfectly flat once the grooves are filled in with clear.

Quoted from tyking:

They just had a tape holding them in. I reseated them and they are secure in the sense that they only move when considerable force is applied. So they are good to go in the sense that the clear coat will essentially freeze them into where they are, right?
[quoted image]

Don’t count on the clear being the glue, you’ll get moving inserts and chipping. Remove all loose (probably all) and reglue them. Good opportunity to level them.

McFaddens lacquer.

I forget it’s been years since I bought 8 qts. Down to my last one now. Time to resupply. I use at least a quart every playfield.

I took a look at the thread “Best way to remove a ball guide?” Pry up with something and they just come right out? Sounds too easy. Am I expecting barbs? Is it going to difficult finding new ball guides? Thanks

I’ll put a big flat washer stack under the wire ball guide, alternately prying each end. Twist a large flat head screwdriver between the top washer and wire. Watch the playfield does not pull up with the wire.

Quoted from tyking:

are you spraying it on, or brushing it on?

Spray, you can’t brush lacquer clear over paint, it gets “hot” meaning it melts the prior coat. It’ll smear (I know I wrecked a really nice el dorado learning)

#1255 3 years ago
Quoted from boilerman:

so how are you doing this brushable lacquer. once your touchups are done, then what?

Not brushing lacquer, lacquer sprayed over lacquer (original clear) will melt original clear and if brushed, will smear original art and touch ups paint on and around original lacquer.

Quoted from tyking:

If I do the touch ups before removing the wire form ball guides, do I risk messing up the touch ups when I am trying to pry up and out the guides?

Any work around touch ups can be a risk I guess, you should completely strip and clean the surface before touch ups.

Fixed all the bugs on my Cowpoke restore except one thing. First activation of the score motor after game set-up for a 5 or 50 point score I get an extra ball scoring. After that first scoring both the 5 and 13 banks reset (resetting "Z") and all works normally. It's kicking my butt.

Quoted from Mopar:

If I remember correctly, the Q Relay is the Add-a-Ball Relay, right?
But either way, I'd check the Z armature switch (in the 5 bank) and also
maybe the EOS switch on the Ball Count Unit. It also could be one of the
snowshoe contacts on the Ball Count Unit is worn a little bit flat. I sometimes
had to solder in one of the rivets (when on the 4th step up), but many times
filed the flat snowshoe so the center was the high side. I had to replace
snowshoes also, but filing so the center of the snowshoe touched the rivets
usually did the trick..

XX is add balls to play relay to Add ball on balls to play unit. If I manually reset Z before plunging the ball it plays correctly. Should 5 bank (and Z) be resetting before the ball is served up? Seems Z needs to be activated to step up the balls to play to 5 at start but is still active until the motor runs again, adding a ball through Z then the bank resets deactivating Z.

Quoted from Mopar:

At the Start up of a game and once everything resets (score reels and ball count), the Z Relay
energizes which transfers the circuit from the Ball Count's Reset Coil, to the Ball Counts
Step Up Coil through a set of make/break switches (in the Z Relay). Once the Ball Count
goes to the forth step, 2 blades from the Ball Counts snowshoe wiper (spring loaded blades)
complete a circuit to the 5 Bank Reset Coil, and while those snowshoe wipers are on those
two rivets, the next time the Ball Count's Step Up Coil energizes, it makes a set of switches
(EOS) which energizes the 5 Bank Coil. So the 3 things in the 5 Bank Coil's circuitry at Start
Up is the Z Armature switch (the switch on the 5 Bank Frame that the Z Relay's plate makes
when the Z Relay is in the energized (tripped) position), the rivets on the Ball Count's wiper
board that 2 of the snowshoe wiper blades are on after the Ball Count stepped up 4 times,
and the Ball Count's Step Up Coil's End Of Stroke switch which makes when the Ball Count Step
Up Coil pulls in. Those are the switches (and two wipers) that need to be checked, and of course
possibly the Jones plugs.

Still trying to decipher the sequence you describe but cutting to the chase, the z should be reset and ball count should be at 5 BEFORE the ball is plunged correct? It appears something in the path between the 4th and 5th ball count step up is not working, I’ll take a close look at the ball count unit and items you described. Thank you!

I’m guessing I have my balls to play unit set off by one position. I set the zero position assuming it was correct when I got it. It could well have been set wrong before. It was a non-working project when I got it.

Hardtop. This must have some thickness to it, right? How does the additional thickness affect things such as the flipper bushings, bumpers, and slingshots? Also, all the screws going into the top of the playfield are effectively shorter by the thickness of the hardtop. Just curious if the hardtop introduces any issues due to it's thickness.

I’m guessing these are less than 1/16th thick. I imagine any wallowed out hole might need a little toothpick filler but wouldn’t expect much impact on kickers or pops. Flippers should have plenty of height in them to accommodate.

Finally back on my Quick Draw restore. I have a Fast Draw in progress as well. I painted both cabinets at the same time to reuse the home made stencils. That was hit and miss, the Mylar plastic stencils I made ripped a lot and required a lot of repairs after using each up to 4 times (left/right x 2) There’s no efficiency trying to do both in tandem from here. Both getting new playfields.

Quoted from vec-tor:

Question:
Since you are cleaning all the metal relay brackets, are you also having to remake all of the letter ID decals for each relay, or where you able to save the OEM letter decals?

They survived cleaning. The coil wrappers didn’t. Also I put the dishwasher on too long and some switch insulators from the score motor disintegrated. Easy fix with it torn down. Replaced the bad ones and put new wrappers on.

Quoted from Dono:

Nice. Are you using a plotter/cutter to cut stencils using an art file? Also curious why your stencil material is ripping since you're using mylar? I just completed a FD for a client that included a repaint, and I'm going to be doing an FD for myself that also needs a repaint down the road.

Hand traced and cut from old art. The tac spray holds tight and pulling it off will start a tear in sharp turns.

The only way to really clean is to break it down. Drops target assemblies took the better part of a day. I’m not used to them. The majority of my restorations have been from the 60s and few had drops. Targets cleaned up nice, minor touch up needed on silver horseshoe targets only.

Steady progress on my Fast Draw restore. New coin door needs installation, then main board rebuild and head mechanics with new sockets. The original backglass is a 7-8 with a bit of red paint loss. Trying to get Shay to run some with the orange Indian dress, he claims some came in white but the only ones I have seen that color were his reproductions. Anyone ever see an original in white??

Gotta love 4 player jobs. Fast Draw getting a complete rebuild. Lots of time spent to properly restore multi player games. It’s no wonder the a single players are most collected. They did make these jammed back boxes modular though. That’s nice for breaking it down. Here I’m redoing the back box sockets. New sockets are a must any more, I’m over having to repeatedly open up a restored game to jiggle an intermittent light bulb.

I get it. I have completely restored basically worthless games, Spin Wheel (two of them) Merry-Go-Round, Mayfair, Ship-Mates. Pimps stencils are great but I can’t seem to part with the same money I buy most my projects at. I make mine with various methods, I’ll trace original pattern on clear plastic (even painted over cabs still reveal that once stripped a bit) for free form patterns like El dorado or quick draw, I’ll create stincils with the plastic by cutting it and tac spray. For geometric patterns I’ll just use tape and paper.

Believe it or not that is Montana webbing in a can. The big thing is getting the right nozzle, and then the technique. Too far away and it comes out like cobwebs. Too close and it's too heavy. Quick burst and you have to really move your hand quickly.

I'm going to venture to say my latest project is never going to look that clean no matter what I do...

Quoted from A_Bord:

Adding all the text back after a complete repaint of the yellow on a trainwreck Surf Champ. Manually vectored all characters for a perfect match.

I’m anxiously awaiting my Wade Krause repro surf champ playfield and I don’t even own the game. Great work!

Getting some time on Crosstown. Can anyone with one look at the labels for me? I don’t have a schematic to determine which is “A” and which is “I” on the bottom of the Playfield. Labels were gone.

Saved a lot of trouble later. Had 4 coils in the wrong position!

Motivation… moving my restored fast draw out to a family vacation home. It’s a duplicate of my quick draw. In process, crosstown, KOD in the wings and playmates in the ether, (deposit made)

Quoted from wolverinetuner:

Clearcoating (16 coats of Minwax Polycrylic), extra clearcoat to level all 36 inserts, sanding (220, 400, 800, 1000, and 1500 grit), and Novus 2 DONE (and worth it)!!! Finally, on to the home stretch: re-populating the playfield.

Skipping that ever important 17th coat? looking good!

Motivation. I started my final restoration on my last remaining parts machine, Cross Town over a year ago and stalled after finishing the playfield restoration. I have since loaded up the queue, now I have to get busy finishing it to get at my more desired games.
