Hello all!

I just stared work on a 1966 Bally Capersville. A little bit of a basket case, but that has never stopped me.

Almost finished with Gottlieb 1970 Baseball. Was pretty rough cabinet and back box with lots of electrical problems. Just got it working 100 percent tonight. (With help from advice of Pinsider @markg). Still some cabinet touch up painting, and have to fabricate a new back box cover. But all other cosmetic work is done.

DCRand nice job! For the cabinet, did you do a full strip and re-paint or touch-up work? If it was touch-up, how did you do this?

Alberto

#409 4 years ago

Alberto,

It was touch up work, if you look closely I didn't fix the actual wood problems. I used the same craft paints that I use for play field touch ups, and it came out better than I expected. For the "antique" white, I mixed white, yellow and dark brown. Mixed orange and a little red for the orange, and green with just a touch of black for the green areas. Then used an artist brush for the bare wood areas. Painted pure white in the wood areas of the green and orange. Then on all three colors used a wider artist brush and just did a this coat over the entire color area to help blend in the mixed and original colors. Haven't finished the sides or the back box yet. Will wax entire cab once those areas are done.

Working on a Cowpoke. Started going through it on Monday and finished this morning.
All was fine but for a lazy/sluggish Roto target. It fired up fine, and then after further
inspection, broken and missing inner parts on the Roto. Fortunately the Roto Target was
still complete on a parts World Series. The parts didn't have the bronze coating, but all
interchanged perfectly..

Picked up a non-working Gottlieb Atlantis, "diamond in the rough".

Currently working on the score reels. Interesting that someone down the line replaced the thousandth unit with an early decagon reel (not round) while all the other reels are of the round variety.

#412 4 years ago

Sure Shot 2 back on the operating table for the weekend. First fully operational test is planned for Monday.

Some more new wiring and switches being added to get the logic working 100%. All issues solved, just need to do the work.

Added another Jones Plug in the backbox to replace a dead wire in the Alternator with a new one. The original wire has a break in it somewhere. Not worth tearing half the wiring harness apart tracking it down.

Having a lot of fun with this project.

Believe it or not I have not blown a fuse to date testing!

Time for lunch then back to SS2.

Now that the Teacher's Pet restore is done, it's on to Spanish Eyes. Spanish Eyes has been a lot of work already. Basically just need to put the playfield back in and rebuild the flippers and a few assemblies.

Started the repaint of Atlantis.

This is the head and cab of a game Mike O bought that had possibly the worse nicotine stains on it I've ever seen. But the head and the cabinet are the best I've ever repainted. I hardly had to fill at all, and didn't really even have to reglue anything.

Mike and I switched cabs. We emptied the games and he took my original cab from my game and I took this on to repaint. Head front (resized).jpgHead front (resized).jpgHead right (resized).jpgHead right (resized).jpg Pedestal (resized).jpgPedestal (resized).jpg

I start with cabinets to get motivated. Been stalled on mechanics as this one had a transformer fire.

I start with the playfield so the clear has plenty of time to cure. Truth is a freshly painted cabinet looks so good it is a motivator to do the other stuff.

I’ve been repainting my Star Pool. The old paint was rough, faded, and poorly touched up. Made my own stencils and changed colors. The original colors really didn’t match anything else in the game.

I had the 2 player version called Hi-Flyer, fun pin if oddly placed spinner. Great sounding chime box (wood) which can be rebuilt with Gottlieb chime grommets.

Today I did finishing touches on a Cowpoke. Back in the 90s, I picked it up
because it was in better shape than the one I had. Then bought another that
was nicer, then another (which is presently in the game room) that was nicer.
Once going through this one, I realized how many missing and broken parts
there were, but fortunately I found the needed ones in the parts barn. I just
need to order the "50 point Spin" top bumper cap. She's not mint, but plays
nice and is in much better shape (especially mechanically) than when I started.
That's an original bg that I took from the one in the game room. Was debating,
and although it's a 9.8 original, I decided to put the 10 repro in the one that I'm
keeping.
This one's spoken for, but still have another extra that's very decent..
Edit: I might add, my last games score isn't too shabby..

So far so good. Got the game assembled (Duotron is taking a little rest), and after a bit of drama (score motor ran and ran upon power up) I went in poking around, lifted the big relay bar, and the motor stopped, all worked, and has continued to work. Unlike my other (Gottlieb) games this seems to not do a full reset on power up so can be accidentally left in weird, unstable states during testing. At least that's what it seems like - I incremented the bonus up to 20K (testing) and then turned the game off before draining - when I powered back up, the bonus did not decrement. Will take some getting familiar with; I've got the game to mess around with for a bit, and the schematic, and will use this as a learning experience.

Not loving the 10 pt chime (seems very clanky) so a little attention, perhaps a grommet rebuild, might be nice. And the flippers are a little wonky, will give them some attention. And will probably replace all the backglass bulbs with LEDs.

But overall in great shape - seems to have been of German origin (1 DM, Quarter, and 50 Pfennig on the coin door, 240 / 50 Hz on the nameplate) and was home owned for nearly 20 years. Playfield is nice, cabinet OK - original paint, some damage, but a bit dirty (cleaning in progress), backglass has a bit of flaking lower right but otherwise looks great.

It's funny but the more games by other manufacturers of this era I play (Bally, Williams, now Chicago Coin), the more that Gottlieb games hit the sweet spot to me. Perhaps those were the games I most encountered as a kid. But this one will be fun to work on / with over the next few weeks.

Took years but done. It was a mess with about 1/4 of the wiring harness burned due to a transformer fire. Steppers seized due to heavy layers of lithium grease. About 30 loose wires needed re-soldering. I was surprised I was able to get it up without schematics. Just kept at it all day, one problem at a time flushed out.

MerryGoRound
Arguably the first pin with an end of ball bonus countdown,
except for those gobble holes

#432 4 years ago

The way Fast Draw counts down the bonus when there's no multiplier always bugged me. It decrements so fast that the #44s barely have a chance to start lighting up, goes by in a dim blur. So today I put warm no-ghosting LEDs in that strip and added a 22 ohm resistor between the strip and its ground wire to trim their brightness down to the level of the 44s in the other inserts. Looks much better. I'm not a huge fan of swapping incandescent for LEDs espec. an EM but will use them if it 'fixes' something or brightens up a really dark GI area.

Im selecting my next restore from my stash. I have:
bank a ball - already restored one this one needs some playfield touchups and clearcoating . Cabinet needs a lot of love and repaint chrome is trashed picked up for a cheap years ago. Likely next. I already purchased the back glass balls and new back glass.
Crosstown - rough all around, got cheap
Cow-Poke - this will need a new back glass and lots of play field touchups & clearcoat. Also will need a total cabinet repaint was painted over white and is pretty beat
Quick Draw - Pretty fair shape already but I am waiting for Wade Krause playfield replacement to make it new

Finished up a couple issues on my Old Chicago and that looks done, fingers crossed. Cleaned my gummed up bonus unit on Argosy. It is now giving the correct bonus. Last thing on it is the drops sometimes get pushed too high and can't be dropped by hitting them. I've tried adding longer coil sleeves and washers to limit the travel of the plungers, but it still happens, though not every time like when I got the game. Anyone have an Argosy and could take some pics of their drop bank? Or any tips? Worn targets or parts of the mech?

#437 4 years ago
Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:

I recently had one drop do that on my Hot Tip EM. Upon inspection, I found that the horizontal foot at the bottom of that drop had broken off, so there was nothing to limit how high the coil pushed it up. I used epoxy and, after more than one attempt, I managed to glue the foot back in place without removing the drop from its assembly.

Hmmm. I'll give them a closer inspection. They all do it, but not at the same time. Basically, the target goes so far up, the little copper horseshoe hangs on the lip instead of the intended plastic ridge.

I just started on my very first em, Grand Prix. Currently starts but there seem to be a few issues. I’m planning on going through and cleaning and adjusting all the switches and score wheels before I get into the troubleshooting hopefully a good game to teach myself on.

Well, it will be an adventure if nothing else. You couldn't have picked a more complex EM to learn on. In addition to two separate bonus steppers, that game is so loaded with relays, steppers etc that when I've moved mine and we had to carry it, we had to remove the playfield to get up and down stairs, it's so heavy.

I've been working on these games for a long time and it's the only EM that just flat intimidates me. And it has 20 score reels on it so if you're going to clean all those you'll be there awhile.

Good luck!

I mentioned in another post in this thread that the chimes sounded "clanky". Well, Williams chimes will do that. I'm not a huge fan of those chimes, installed in Williams games they at least are part of the package, but was disappointed to find them in Sky Rider.

Quickly rectified though; I picked up a set of CC chimes on ebay, which went in super easy - the holes were there (but either never used or perhaps painted over at some point). Needed a bit of love (two of the the plastic caps for the plungers were loose in the chime boxes) and I've got some grommets, washers and sleeves on order for a proper rebuild. I've also gone with the 33V tap and it plays a lot nicer, at 30V it was damn near impossible to send the ball back up to the top. Now much easier.

And so much nicer sounding.....
