I've done a couple of those. The backglasses are always perfect.

Yeah, however they had their backglasses made BITD was miles better than Williams or Gottlieb. Bally was really on top of their shit

I’ve gone through the Space Mission cabinet and backbox, finally starting on the playfield.

Quoted from jrpinball:

I've never seen a flaking "Old Chicago" glass for example.

I have seen it on one of the OCs I owned,
but it was a case of "windex" wicking past the channel lift
causing some wholesale delamination of paint near the bottom backside of the BG is a couple spots.
But by and large Bally BGs of the mid to late 70s hold up very well,
both with little light bulb burn thru or paint thinning/flaking or for that matter not much color fading.
though one of my Bally Hang Glider's BG had some color fade and paint thinning.
Also had a Centaur II that had crazing and delamination that was unusual.
And my Mata Hari EM has severe skin cancer.
As into the 80s solid state era it was kinda hit and miss with how well BGs held up.

Quoted from mrm_4:

That’s a good looking playfield!

It looks better in the photo than up-close in real life. There’s some rippling/planking and ball swirls, and a lot of cupped inserts. But I’ve seen worse. I plan to clean it up, touch it up, and clear coat.

I really like the artwork on the Space Mission playfield. Thorough coordination with the theme of the machine.

I’m really close to finishing my resto. Just need to sand and polish the rails, print a few more labels, and go through the panel of the back box.

I had a fairly free week, so I thought I'd go through the Smarty.
The glass I had redone. It's not digitized, but it does the trick.
She plays nice and it's a simple game, but nice little player.
I had this one stored since the mid 90s. Wish I had room for
them all, but I'll probably be selling or trading this one..

1978 Gottlieb Strange World

I started a playfield swap on this game as the original had “paid the rent”. Strong playing Canadian export machine appears to have never been shopped out with the exception of the rings and the flipper bats. Wiring harness removed with no problem and repopulation has begun on a beautiful Wade Krause playfield. Some photos of the old pf.

Well, it looks like Winter's not going away anytime soon, so I brought in the
Playtime from the barn. The Pin Deck section is from another United Ball Bowler.
It physically fits, but the male to female plugins don't quite match up, so after it's
all gone through, a bit of trouble shooting will be needed, but it's a machine worth
putting the time into..
So far, all 20 Score Reels totally gone through. Good enough for today..

The art is almost identical to Seven Up which bgresto has. I wonder if you could get Steve to cover the credit window and add a window for the dummy reel. Assuming the other reels are placed identical to Seven Up.

With on 225 made it's going to be tough. Good luck.

1978 Gottlieb Strange World

Finished reinstalling wiring harness on new playfield. Smoke test completed with no smoke. Game started and ran with all functions working properly except top white number 1 gapped a little tight.
Top and bottom aprons, rings, and plastics should be installed this weekend.

Really a fast and fun player. Action around the pops, the slingshots next to the flippers, and some of the shot angles required to hit targets make this title stand out.

Almost never need to work on my Fast Draw but lately it's been intermittently missing score replays and knocks. Narrowed it down to only player one, then to the 1000 reel score disc by wiggling things around while I held the 1000 relay pressed in at a replay score and it knocked and I saw a spark. Ground lug had the wire attached so it looked fine, but on the other side of the disc the solder around the lug had come loose so the lug and wire were just spinning loose in the solder. Resoldered, fixed.

While I was in there, noticed the 10 reel's two screws that hold the score disc down had worked themselves terribly loose. Tightened them but then the advance to '9' was now sluggish/iffy... readjusted the reel switches and now '9' advance is nice and smooth.

I've had good luck with Sprayway "Crazy Clean" for nicotine yellowing. Spray on, wait for it to start running (~1min), wipe off. Will take paint if left too long so gotta be careful, but overall more even than scotch pads and regular cleaner.

Coin door done, area around it not:

Hey. Where have you been? Good to hear from you again.

#3291 1 year ago

I could sense Winter wasn't going away anytime soon here in Upstate, and since I could use
the storage space, a couple Mondays ago I pulled the Playtime out of the barn.
This was somewhat of a frankenstien machine. Cosmetically I didn't restore it 100%, but enough
to physically get things to line up, and color match. Had to test and change some of the wiring,
and now all straightened out. 80% completed, 20 to go. She's going to be a nice little 16' bowler..

Quoted from Mopar:

She's going to be a nice little 16' bowler..

I had a big ball bowler once, but never got around to getting it set up and working,
bought it from someone near St.Louis.
Dennis Dodel hauled it out to me in California about 25 yrs ago,
along with a couple other pins that I bought from Dennis, (Spooksville and ???)
back when he used to transport pins etc for a time.
after that he said he would never transport another bowler again.
Lived in my backyard covered patio for years, a semi-feral cat ended up making it his home.
It was a United Oasis, can not remember if it was a 13 footer or 16 footer.
I ended up trading it for a working WMS Space Odyssey.
I still have a couple of the balls laying around here somewhere though.

#3293 1 year ago

I've had a few ball bowlers but only one ever got set up in my basement. It was the only game my youngest daughter would venture down to play.

It was a ton of fun but my game room is only 364 sq ft. Having a bowler ate up a ton of precious real estate. So it was a real compromise having it down there. I still struggle with the idea. Is it as fun as having a small row of pins? Maybe?

Just started this Target Pool that has been in my storage for a few years now. I decided I wanted to deviate from the original red and blue just a little. I think it came out pretty good. The playfield has been restored and automotive cleared as well. Its a WIP but I think it will come out pretty nice.

Couldn't find a "Cross Town" owners thread -- if there is one here -- but I'm looking for some clues. Was doing rather well on a game today, passed the 1200 points threshold (which offhand I think is Level 2 Replay), and then the pin suddenly jumps to 1,999 points with a continuous, VERY loud buzzing noise, which won't go away until the game is powered down. Not the first time this has happened. What should I be looking for, as a possible cause ?

Quoted from Heretic_9:

Couldn't find a "Cross Town" owners thread -- if there is one here -- but I'm looking for some clues. Was doing rather well on a game today, passed the 1200 points threshold (which offhand I think is Level 2 Replay), and then the pin suddenly jumps to 1,999 points with a continuous, VERY loud buzzing noise, which won't go away until the game is powered down. Not the first time this has happened. What should I be looking for, as a possible cause ?

Find the loud buzzing coil when this occurs and follow the circuit.

I am working on a Gottlieb Soccer. The cabinet I just stripped out as it is broken so fitting a new bottom and glueing it all back up. It was a literal barn find so this machine is filthy. Any tips on cleaning the lower panel while it is outside of cabinet? It is completely covered in dirt.IMG_2186 (resized).jpgIMG_2186 (resized).jpg330466425_1155967805106424_5939497118565021929_n (resized).jpg330466425_1155967805106424_5939497118565021929_n (resized).jpgIMG_2230 (resized).jpgIMG_2230 (resized).jpgIMG_2384 (resized).jpgIMG_2384 (resized).jpgIMG_2393 (resized).jpgIMG_2393 (resized).jpgIMG_2354 (resized).jpgIMG_2354 (resized).jpg

Completely remove all components from the motor board. Disassemble and clean, taking pictures before you start.

Use a small stiff brush, and gentle compressed air to remove the bulk dirt, then do as Playdium
has suggested. The wiring will be easier to clean while it's still attached to the board.
