Used to, now I find physical inspection during shop/restore process catches problems faster than chasing them down before shopping.

Hey all, working on a Solids N Stripes and currently tearing down the playfield top side for painting and clearing.

What is the best way to remove the saucers bottoms or are they best left in place and work around them?

I've always thought those were screwed in. I would gently pry it loose and replace with small 1/4" screws.

Gottlieb Top Card continued. I use the built-in playfield rotisserie to get at the underside of the pf. Cut some pipe insulation in half and cover with soft shop towels.
PBR parts order arrived so it was time to install new coil sleeves. The sleeves had never been changed. Cleaned plungers and installed 9 coil sleeves.
Next I had to flip the rotisserie 180 degrees to install bumper acetate pf protectors, bumper bodies and skirts, with the skirt point aimed at the top of the pf. And the bulb sockets. I should have done these steps before I flipped the pf on its back. It would have eliminated 1 pf flip. (I also had to uninstall 1 bumper as the acetate had slipped out.)
Flipped the pf on its back again to connect the bumper bulb sockets. Used a new roll of solder with great results. I always thought my soldering iron wasn’t getting hot enough. Nope, wrong solder.
Before I repopulate the pf I decided to install the glass channel and trim at the top pf arch. Since it is a Gottlieb, all of the top arch hardware is buffed back to a chrome finish, if possible. This finish will last for years and looks great. The problem is I misplaced the top glass channel after I buffed it. I’ll try harder tomorrow to try to find it.

And also installed 5 new star rollovers on ‘74 Top Card.

Just finished fixing up an issue where I'd be scoring some phantom touchdowns.. figured I'd put a drop of super lube on the spinner.. lol

That’s a gorgeous looking playfield!

Gottlieb Top Card.
I found the missing playfield trim and installed the top and bottom arches. I also installed a new set of flipper bats and 3/8” flipper rings. Short session due to work tonight.

Just started on 1934 Gottlieb Push Over. Picked this up about a year ago. It was in a rusty open ended storage container for quite some time but is cleaning up nicely. Lots to do.

Is that an EM, or a PM?

EM. But D/C powered. Has both a coil and bell. Cool rules. Plunge 5 balls for points. Land in the “Push Over” hole and it returns your “OUT” balls and advances balls in kick outs while simultaneously ringing the bell. Repeater hole does the same and can trigger a second advancement in kickouts.

Those are toast... when I did my S&S, I replaced all of those with new from PBR... they have the correct colors as well... I used tiny screws instead of those bloody nails... nails can loosen or you can pop them too hard and crack the plastic.

Just finished this. Doesn’t always get much love. The 10/11 are always tough to collect. Owner has a nice apron for it.

It *is* factory! No meter, but based on usual wear areas, I believe it is very, very low plays. Maybe 1 or two years at best. Was likely passed by for more attractive titles!

Restoration/shop number 61 complete on Top Card. Pretty easy when they start out as nice as this game was.

Starting to build up the playfield on this rare title. Bally only made three pinball titles in the 50s. (Many bingos, arcade games) The mechanisms are unlike any other I have seen before.

Yes, I modified gottlieb platters by cutting off the long plastic post. Installed the small metal pin. Haven't started the underside yet.......

Yup. I also epoxied the hole on the upper side that the pin sticks in..
Having hose small adjusters on the underside proved to be handy..

Looking great Tim! What did you use to protect the playfield and how are your lockbar end caps? Assume the glass is from Shay?

Ok, starting slow since this is my first restoration. I have disassembled one coin shoot, and am looking for advice on how to clean it up. Based on past posts, I have bought, but not used yet, the following: CLR, Evaporust, Mothers, Brillo pads, Vibratory bowl, and walnuts 12-20.

Do I put all the parts shown in the photo in the vibratory bowl? If so, will the part that has a plastic piece riveted to it get damaged? Even put in the small washers and screws?

I'd try putting the parts in CLR first, and see how they come out. The plated parts don't take long, and will gleam after touching them up with the Mothers polish.
Vibratory bowl, huh? I guess that's the official terminology for it. You may not need it.
Get a good drill for polishing shafts, such as the shooter rod, and the coin return rods.
Immerse the door in EvapoRust.
Yours doesn't look too bad, and should come out very nice.
Be sure to thoroughly dry everything before finish polishing.
Use a hair dryer or heat gun. I've even used a propane torch to thoroughly dry some items like the coin door.

The tumbler seems to work well when you have a decent amount of parts to tumble in one batch. I would put all your fasteners in and maybe a few medium sive pieces. Also either a shot of flitz tumbler media polish or Novus 3 will help. Walnut husks will give a finer finish, but won't be as aggressive on heavier corrosion. I use corn cob media (sold as parakeet bedding)
As JR said, hand polishing with a quality product (I use Magic Blue) is a good choice for the larger pieces. The door itself can be immersed in Evapo to start. I would do overnight, but don't mix with other types of metals. Then polish by hand.

Do yourself a favor...take that PIECE OF SHIT tumbler back to Harbor Freight and buy a REAL tumbler made by Berry.

The HF Chinese junk motor will self destruct or the bowl will crack from a sharp part or the top nut will strip out the threads on the post. Plus they are noisy AF.

RETURN IT NOW EVEN IF YOU HAVE OPENED THE BOX !! You will thank me later.

I had a little bit of damage on the back of my Recel Too Speed from shipping. I’m in the process now of wood-gluing and a couple of bolts to hold it together

This game worked perfectly before de-populating. It’s been a few months since I stripped it down for restoration. Fortunately it is my 6th pf replace/restore and my preparation for reinstallation now starts at the de-populating stage of the restore. I hope that helps this time.
Pounding the snubber rails and other wire guides back into place with care. So far the clear coat is holding up. Playfield restored by Las Vegas Playfields.

Today is score reel day. Boy do I hate 4 player machines. Looking forward to getting it running though.
