The latest project out of storage next to the current one. I have only worked on one Bally machine before. I’m looking forward to getting this Hokus Pokus up an running.

Had one and loved it. The spinners are fun as is the "Over The Top" buzzer.

Just got this CC King Pin from1951. Trying to fix it up for a friend. It's very different kind of wood rail.

Anyone have a schematic?

Sorry, no schematic, but those are Fly Away Pins, right?

#1855 2 years ago

Worked on Paratroopers today, blowing fuses, spring had fallen off a relay and someone put SB fuses in the rail sections which forced the main transformer to blow first, so some of my diagnostic time was wasted as I assumed it was the 110v bank reset coil causing the main 110 v fuse to blow. It really is an interesting game and I play it quite a bit. So when I drop the play field and turn it on, to my surprise - there is a GI light in the red triangle which never appeared before. It's directly beneath the yellow pop. It makes a big difference. It flickers now but next time I open her up I'll make sure it stays on.

Photo summary of Bally Black Jack shop/restoration job with before and after photos. Looks like previous owner tried to remove bumper Mylar with a screwdriver. My efforts make it look better but not perfect. Replaced Bally “Over the Top” style buzzer with a bell to more appropriately indicate a Player vs Dealer black jack “Winner”. Now I have to move a few games to place it chronological order with the other Bally games…

Great game. I’ve brought 2 back to life. The first one had a lot of playfield wear, so we found a better example and I gave the worn one to our son.

Good luck. Feel free to reach out if you’ve got questions.

Four Million B.C.. Gonna work the pf/shopout only. The artwork will be a challenge if not problematic. The kickout plunger was always weak, now I can see why. The coil had gotten real hot(burned the wood), and someone had replaced the wrong coil??? I'll look into that later. Progress so far, inserts leveled, and pf cleaned.

Getting closer on the head I'm doing for a guy who is turning a Meteor cab into a Stargazer.

I got this Williams Zig Zag a couple of weeks ago. If not for the kickout hole wear I wouldn't touch this playfield. Doesn't even have a ball track up top. I'll restore the cab down the line. For now just playing and enjoying

OK, been working a bunch on Bally Time Zone (although I've not been posting).
I've reassembled the game, repopulated the playfield, and started cleaning and troubleshooting switches and coils (cabinet is termite free!)
All playfield functions are working properly, but I having an issue with the Game Over relay not sticking (either the coil is too weak for the tab to catch or there is a dirty contact, probably dirty since it is intermittent) and I'm only able to start a 1-player game that only plays 1 ball then ends in Game Over at drain, despite it being set to 5 ball. Won't start a 2-player game. Any advice is appreciated!

Bally Black Jack finally in it’s chronological place. Player 2 100,000 reset relay needed cleaning and adjustment. Tilt relay would occasionally not kill power to the pf when tilted. Relay obviously out of adjustment when I acquired it visually. That concluded the restoration/shop of this Bally. I had to move and re-level 10 4 player Bally games to slide it home. Waiting on parts for my next project.

I love your EM lineup that also had SS games. Have you thought about doing the GTB variants too?

I do have an EM Joker Poker but I am not a huge fan of that SS/EM Gottlieb era. I probably should have bought my neighbors EM Close Encounters when he offered it, but I passed due to too many machines. Space Walk would definitely interest me but probably not at the price the market would demand.

AWESOME.

I'm going back home in 3 days where I have an ASTRO waiting me. My playfield is wrecked beyond yours, though. I'm going to repaint, replace the BG, renew all plastic and rubber, and put on a new coin door, etc.

Someday I will have to get the playfield to a repaint-restore artist.

I have another complete game without plastics. 10 years ago, I started cleaning it up, and got pulled in other directions svx and now, I have no idea where they are. It's in NJ.

Thank you. When you start with good bones it works so much better. The quality of wood in that game is superior. It's 61 years old but solid as a rock. Minimal filling/gluing.

The OC is not as good as it appears in the picture. It's been hand painted. The glass however is pristine. I just got a CPR repro playfield for it clearcoated by Ron Kruzman. This thing will be sweet when done.

GIGI is gorgeous...and its a fun game!

#1884 2 years ago

I just brought home a Gigi! I will be working on that to get it playing 100% and it will probably not be restored as nice as that one for a while! That is the EM I am working on now! I am looking forward to playing that sweet game!

It's a totally different kind of game than any other I own. Can be frustrating as hell, then you hit a good one where you actually manage to get the special and get enough advances to win some games. Best I've done on it so far is about 1800, and getting to the third replay level which I have at 1500 is not easy, at all.

Good luck on it. To quote Mike O, the logic on this one is pretty tricky. Took a lot of fiddling on it to get it playing 100 percent.

This Solar City sat in an attic above a garage for about 25 years. All the scoring reels and steppers are seized up, but with some coaxing I was able to get it to finish a reset cycle.

I’m looking forward to bringing it back.

Starting on Flipper Fair. Lots to do. The goal is to get a good playing machine. The playfield is very presentable. One or two cupped inserts to replace, and I’d like a better center target, but otherwise the project will be the EM stuff. Have a new Shay repro backglass.

This is my first Gottlieb and my first AAB. Funny, it resets when it gets plugged in. Must be a stuck switch somewhere. My goal for this weekend is to clean all the plugs & relays. Then we'll see what works. Hopefully the cleaning will fix a lot of bumpers that aren’t registering.

10s reel is sticking on 2, on reset. Lots to do.

One of the relays on the score reels says it is some sort of lock switch. Why would a lock circuit be linked to a score reel? Doesn’t make sense.

I've picked back up my first legit EM project; Bally Air Aces. Sat for a while because I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start a game but I took the bottom board out, cleaned and gapped the switches again. With the help of some members here I figured out it was one switch on the score motor which was preventing the credit button from doing its job.

Haven't done any work on the PF, has pretty intense planking and some heavy wear around the pops but I'm gonna clean it up as best as I can, wax it and enjoy. 20200821_193314.jpg20200821_193314.jpg

List of issues I have to sort out (that I could remember off the top of my head, wrote it out at work because I was bored).20210611_213832.jpg20210611_213832.jpg

Was able to put this Bally Freedom back together and get it running this week just finishing it today. It was a literal mess where cleaning fixed most of the issues. I got to learn to solder on this machine and really like how it turned out. A few little details left but it’s completely playable

Figured out a good chunk of problems by testing them multiple times, figuring out how the game is supposed to work. Both of the springs for the drop target arm coils are missing, so when the arm pulls in to reset during the game start, it never moves back down and obstructs the drop targets during gameplay. Found one of them in the bottom of the cabinet; may as well add two of those to the shopping cart.

I got a better grasp on the outhole problem but need to figure out how to solve it. When the game initially starts, it kicks the ball out fine, but if I score anything and leave the drop targets up, then drain, it never advances past ball 1. If I drop any of the drop targets, then drain the ball, it advances to ball 2 just fine. Also when the game tilts, it never stops tilting. Assuming this is related to the problem of it not advancing to ball 2 properly.

Close up picture of the planking. Also, more and more inserts are falling out. Sitting (covered) outside in the desert for multiple years must have completely dried the glue out on them 20210612_142531.jpg20210612_142531.jpg

Finally through with playfield touch-up, clearcoating (which also leveled the inserts, all 30 of which were sunken to some degree), playfield repopulation, and the inevitable final troubleshooting. At last, my first woodrail in the lineup! It’s definitely got that “one more time” feel to it!

Quoted from undrdog:

One of the relays on the score reels says it is some sort of lock switch. Why would a lock circuit be linked to a score reel? Doesn’t make sense.

I would guess that is referring to the lock-in circuit of the point relay. Every score unit has a corresponding point relay. The point relay can respond very quickly to short closures on the PF from a ball hit. There is a switch on the point relay that locks it on electrically as soon as the relay closes. A different switch on the relay also closes to energize the drive coil of the score unit. When the drive coil has pulled in far enough to mechanically advance the score unit to the next number, a tab on the drive arm hits the lock-in switch (also known as an end-of-stroke or EOS switch) to open it. That interrupts the relay lock-in circuit so the relay shuts off and drops out, which in turn shuts off the score unit drive coil, allowing the score unit to advance. In this way, the point relay acts as a pulse stretcher for the score unit, to ensure that very brief switch closures on the PF are scored reliably.

Also, I’ve posted my Jig Saw playfield touch-up paints and mixes in the touch-up paint color thread:

I posted my Jig Saw cabinet and backglass touch-up mixes earlier in that thread.

I had the camera out anyways, so I thought I'd take a couple additional pics.
I once had this in a Bowling Alley, and 10 or 12 years back I pulled it out
(they were redoing the floor) and last week I pulled it from the barn, freshened
it up, and she once again bat's like a charm.
I'll be putting it in a Friend's restaurant replacing a Williams Score Board
which is a very low production machine.
A couple weeks ago, I had the bg made. It's not perfect (I didn't have it digitized)
but big improvement over the original..
btw: Nothing pretty, but the original wasn't this bad while in the Bowling Alley.
Storage stripped away much of the already loose paint..
