Working on a Bally RockMaker, No power at the left flipper. Tracing circuits to isolate the problem.

#1802 2 years ago
Quoted from atpcfiaim:

Black Jack is now number 1 in the shop. Had to clear up some issues on other games before I could start on this one again. Thanks to Larry in Olympia for his help with the other games.
We had everything working on this game then the “Winner” horn stopped working. It is the same as the “Over the Top” horn on some of the last Bally EM games. I did find a used Bally horn replacement, but the 3-figure price, while justified, left me looking for alternatives. Then I remembered my old Bally Money Honey slot machine had a bell for each “Winner”. So I started looking for a 6 vac bell and found one for $14. I think the bell is more appropriate for a winner than a horn. I will photograph the bell after I get it installed.
Here is a photo or two of the shop job starting. I think the playfield will clean up.

I got the “Winner” bell installed today in place of the “Over the Top” horn the factory installed which is triggered by a player win vs dealer win in a black jack hand. I like the bell much better than the horn for a winning hand. Fitted on the side panel where the horn used to reside. $15 well spent for the bell.

Pulled the bumpers off and found the previous owners ham-fisted attempt to remove the Mylar caused more damage than I had initially anticipated. Feck! Damage under bumpers I usually cover with properly colored stick on platters. I think on this game that solution would cover too much artwork.

Clearing and blocking my Royal Flush playfield.

I've had a lot of home improvement projects taking up my time this past month, but in the meantime I've still managed to make some slow progress toward the completion of the Gottlieb "300" I've been restoring.

The PF repaint and clearcoat work was finalized today, so I can start putting the PF back together now. I touched up the cosmetics of this PF the first two weeks of April, and started clearcoating in mid-April. This PF had cupped inserts, so I built up 16 brush layers of clearcoat over 6 days, and then knocked it flat with a random orbit sander a few days ago to take virtually all the cupping out of the inserts.

I use oil-based polyurethane to clearcoat, as I think it provides a nice vintage amber patina on an EM PF. I always wait 3 weeks for the polyurethane to harden before machine-sanding it flat. After sanding, I use a fine-grade sanding sponge to create (by hand) some faux sanding-belt lines in the flattened clearcoat. Then I spray on one final coat of polyurethane to re-clarify the finish, because the random orbit sander makes the surface of the polyurethane somewhat hazy.

Overall this PF seemed to be in pretty good shape cosmetically when I first got it, although it needed a good cleaning. But, the cupped inserts actually turned out to be a big issue, and I also found that there were two fairly serious veneer cracks that ran from top to bottom on both the left and right sides of the PF. The customer wanted the PF cosmetics re-done anyway, so putting on a new clearcoat helped to stabilize the veneer, in addition to reducing the cupping of the inserts.

Here's some pics. The first pic shows the condition of the PF as I received it. The second pic shows the PF in the curing oven after being touched up, with the first coat of polyurethane on it. The final pic is how the PF looks now, ready to have parts put on. If you look at the glare in the clearcoat, you can just make out the faint faux sanding belt lines. And yes, there are also a few cosmetic touch-up color mismatches, which really seem to stand out in the photo for some reason. Fortunately, these are not noticeable when looking at the actual playfield.

Does anyone have a source for common Gottlieb relay springs? Pinball Resource does not have any and surprisingly I am told he doesn't get any requests for them.

Just block sanding. I used to refinish tables and loved getting that dead flat finish. 2k clear makes it much easier now though!

Do you mean for standard AG relays? I get them from the relays of the salvage (partial) machines I have bought for the purpose of harvesting parts. I imagine many others do something similar.

If you don't have a lot of GTB EM games, though, that solution is probably overkill. How many do you need? Someone should be able to spare one or two. If that's all you are looking for, PM me and I'll mail you a couple.

Thanks Tim I appreciate the offer. I am restoring a United Epsilon puck bowler. Right now I have the massive relay bank apart, it is the one that utilizes a 120vac coil to reset it. Some springs are broken so I was hoping to just replace them all because they are not very easy to get to. So I am soaking the good ones in oil. I believe they are 10-234 and 10-233. I may take you up on your offer but let me see if there is anything I can do on my end here first. I do not have any salvage machines. I was surprised when Steve at PBR said he doesn't get any inquiries for them.

Done that one a couple times as well. In fact one of them was listed on this site recently.....both great games that deserve their original colors. Cabinet needed other minor touch ups as well.

It was a rattle can purple that was as close to original that I could find. It was a shade darker/richer than the original that still matched well with the backglass. I called it a win.

When I did Strange Worlds a few years ago, Valspar (Lowes brand) had a really good match they don't make anymore.....
The last of it went for this wall hanger frame I made. The edges on all these are original style with slight over spray. I cut my stencils from poster board.

I looked up my records and it was over a dozen years ago. I haven't seen any leftover can on my paint shelf in that time so my suspicion is I used it all up.

I do recall not being able to find a tone that was close to the original. The original has its own personality. What I was able to find was definitely more/richer purple than the original color. It bugged me at first but not as much as the faded color. It would not surprise me if there are less choices on the shelf today.

Good Luck.

Working on a Mars Trek that was in rough shape when I picked it up and wanted to share what a tremendous help cottonm4 was in working with me to fix the damaged cabinet. He generously offered his time and knowledge to guide a complete woodworking novice through the entire process of building a collar from scratch to painting and installation with step by step guides over email. He sent me instructions that were easy to follow and pictures to show what I needed to do and also explained why each step was important and how it could be improved upon from the factory build. I really learned a lot from him and I'm still amazed that he not only took the time to do this but that he did it all successfully through email.

At some point this cabinet got wet and the particle board was falling apart in places including the neck which was completely gone. Someone in the past built a new base for the head but it covered the side rails and they drilled a bunch of holes in the cab to secure it.

The game was filthy and the cabinet was in awful shape. I knew I would have to address the pedestal issue before really digging into the game. Without knowing anything about woodworking or having another cabinet to compare it to and take measurements from I didn't know where to start. I cleaned up what I could but felt stuck with progress until I found out that another Mars Trek owner JustEverett was having the collar on his game rebuilt and that cottonm4 was making it for him. He put me in touch with Craig who I was hoping could make me one too. He said that he could but some things would be a challenge without being near the cabinet in person. He asked if I knew a woodworker which he could guide through these parts, I didn't but luckily my dad had everything I needed including a table saw so Craig gave me some instructions to get started.

It was a great project to work on with my dad as well. Even though I was a complete newbie Craig was always helpful and encouraging and never made me feel like a bother, a true gentleman! Still have a few kinks to work out to get the game playing but the hard part is over and this game will be up and running soon.

Quoted from Bonk:

[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]This was my first project game and first EM, when I brought it home I thought I had for sure gotten in over my head.

All the pops on egghead are now rebuilt. Just have some fine tuning to do and will be playable. I’m tempted to NOT rebuild flippers as the original are pretty good. I have a kit for it I’ll probably do later on.

You were a great student. You did excellent work and your pin looks quite nice. Most important is that you paid attention to the safety instructions and still have all 10 fingers on your hands.

I'm glad I could help you out.

Safety was definitely the top priority, have to keep the flipper fingers safe haha. Thanks again for the help!

Well done Bonk. That was a satisfying read with photos to show your progress as you learnt. Craig taught you well and the collar looks good now

Those Sonic Particle board Cabinets are the worst
(very heavy and easily disintegrate when exposed to elements)
Though their Playfields will hold up against and survive most anything.

#1848 2 years ago

yep, similar to Sonic, I have a 1976 Recel with a particleboard cabinet, but luckily mine's in good shape after 45 years. Playfield looks like new too.

Definitely not ones to keep in a humid basement.
