Been fighting with Screamo all weekend. Now I know how it got it's name. Finally got the tic tac toe game working properly. Turns out all I had to do was losen the nut on the selection unit. Too tight and the inside and outside wipers had continuity (though they're not touching). Spent way too long tracing wires, checking switches and testing for continuity. I guess that's how you learn though. Next step is getting the game reset working properly.

    Quoted from John_in_NC:

Spray, you can’t brush lacquer clear over paint, it gets “hot” meaning it melts the prior coat. It’ll smear (I know I wrecked a really nice el dorado learning)

so how are you doing this brushable lacquer. once your touchups are done, then what?

    #1255 22 days ago
    Quoted from boilerman:

so how are you doing this brushable lacquer. once your touchups are done, then what?

Not brushing lacquer, lacquer sprayed over lacquer (original clear) will melt original clear and if brushed, will smear original art and touch ups paint on and around original lacquer.

Here's one of my reset problems. 65 years of wear.

Finishing up a WMS Toledo for a client. Steve Young at PBR had these caps stamped with the '10' on his offerings (Bally text, but who's complainin')!!! Just glad to be able to replace the crispy originals. With two big relay banks and a boatload of other mechs, the playfield is one of the heaviest I've worked on (Solids N Stripes probably takes the prize). In my opinion, it's a tad shy of a dud, not one of Harry Williams better games by a long shot. I always wondered who thought up the ridiculous theme of this game... but there's so much more to complain about, my biggest beef being the upper flippers. Using them to hit the buttons to advance the 1 through 8 feature is sure to drain your ball on the opposite outlane pronto. In other words, upper flips totally useless. Not quite a complete snooze fest, but it's close.

    Quoted from John_in_NC:

I’ll put a big flat washer stack under the wire ball guide, alternately prying each end. Twist a large flat head screwdriver between the top washer and wire. Watch the playfield does not pull up with the wire.

If I do the touch ups before removing the wire form ball guides, do I risk messing up the touch ups when I am trying to pry up and out the guides?

Any work around touch ups can be a risk I guess, you should completely strip and clean the surface before touch ups.

Waxing a triple action playfield. Did some adjusting of switches and a major contact cleaning spree. Now every light and switch/target works as it should. Found a couple of broken solder connections thrown in the mix for a bit of extra fun.

What a difference a good wax can make.
The mother of invention stepped in the lend a hand as well. I had to make a tool as I didn't order one when I ordered parts.

This project is getting the extreme kids gloves treatment. I finally gathered myself enough to take a ball guide out. I went with the adjustable pliers method, I saw in this video:

It just seemed the most simple. I used a microfiber cloth between the pliers and playfield and the wire. I only pulled out a little wood on the first one I tried. The rest should be a breeze. After the clear coat do they just get tapped back in, or is it supposed to be done with a glue or something else too?

You only have to per-drill the clearcoat out of the hole. Use same size bit as the wire the barbs will hold it in.

I cleaned the dirt and old lacquer off with lacquer thinner then gave it 3 thin coats of shellac, sanding lightly after the first 2 coats.

This is what the wood looked like after I cleaned it with lacquer thinner before applying the shellac. I was planning to reflow the lacquer but a lot of the old lacquer was worn off.

A customer's game is cleaning up nicely. There are good and bad points to shopping a Bally of this era. The main relay board was pretty easy to go through since you can swing it up and forward to service it without removing it from the game. The top arch was a total pain in the ass puzzle to reassemble including one pair of wires through the arch and playfield for a switch as the top right gate. Cleaned up well though.

Started taking the playfield plastics off this Super Spin. I have never worked on a vari-target before so I’m looking forward to that. Backglass is in great shape. Cabinet is good. PF and inserts do need some work as do the pops.

Some of the scoring switches are not registering, but where is the fun if everything works?

Continue to work on my Wizard. I have finished all the work on the lightboard which included disassembly of all the reels and relays and steppers and cleaning and adjusting

Today started on the lightboard. First job is cleaning and adjusting the motor switches. Not a bad job on a Bally motor. Remove them all then start at one end. You can turn the discs by hand and easily check all the switches.

Cab is painted and stenciling will start soon.

Delivered Toledo today to a great family in Virginia... Dave, Sarah and their two daughters were incredibly stoked to have their game back after so long. Sarah was already playing when I walked out their front door, putting a big smile on my face. She was given this game on her 10th birthday by her uncle, who is still the owner of Victory Glass, a long-revered glass globe provider to the jukebox market. Also attaching a few pix of their prized Wurlitzers, all of them were in incredible condition. Beautiful day to be out and about, couldn't have been better weather to enjoy the occasion.Resized_20201015_142635[9332] (resized).jpegResized_20201015_140736[9336] (resized).jpegResized_20201015_181654[9340] (resized).jpegResized_20201015_182032[9335] (resized).jpeg

Working on a 1958 Satellite that may never had seen a cleaning on the Playfield or new pinballs. The balls had flat facets all over them. I had never seen that before. Lots of touch ups in order, but I love the theme and artwork so will soldier on. Before and after a deep cleaning.

Making progress on Jive Time, pretty much "touching up" every inch of play field. Hit most of the colors right on, but could never quite get the yellow right. Going to mylar entire playfield when done. Since touch ups aren't exactly perfect, mylar over waxed play field, instead of clear coat, would give someone down the road a chance to improve on my work.

I think you did a fine job! It's incredibly tough touching up areas that have serious swirl, without airbrushing the entire color. Not much fun doing planking touch ups either, kudos!

First time denuding a playfield. Still can’t seem to figure out how to get the pop bumper off though (see photo from under playfield). I figure the roll overs I can just pin down with some little pieces of cardboard underneath the playfield when the clear coat goes on.

Any tips on touch up technique would be appreciated. I have the acrylic paint pen thing coming this week. Any guidance on “planking touch ups”? I recall someone posting something about doing pin tip touch ups. Is that a thing too?
