Quoted from SteveinTexas:

I made decals for the older horse games white daisy caps. I have a scanner that was able to copy pretty close. I sanded of the old writing and put the correct decal and it was close to perfect.
If that would work for you I could make you a sheet to play with?

Decals would be great if it isn't too much trouble. I had wondered how they would go on those rounded caps though.

I had also considered hand painting, but it would be too hard to make them look all the same without some kind of stencils.

#802 3 years ago

Yes this is what you think but the decal is so thin and if you use the decal Micro Sol after placing any edges seem to fade away.

Give me a couple of weeks and I will email you if not quicker, the results.

I looked in my stash for round caps that I placed a decal and found this one. I placed the decal helper solutions stuff in the picture. You do NOT actually need the helper but it has a use.

Cool! And thank you. The beer will be on me.

Basically, without those, I have to tell everybody how to fire a Rocket before they begin play. Or I do and they kind of shrug.

"Get three or more Rockets in a row is the name of the game"

#805 3 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

I screwed up and forgot to cover the post hole between the flippers that doesn't belong there again. Oh well.
The dead bumpers use specially printed caps that are not available and mine did not come with them. Can anybody make stencils or what would be the best thing to do? I don't really need them, but it would be a nice touch to complete the game.

What a coincidence, I’m finishing up a 1959 Williams Tic Tac Toe Woodrail and somebody added a center post on that one too. It’s far from perfect, but it plays as designed and looks pretty good with the pinball rescue plastics.

Great job on your game, looks like a fun one.

#806 3 years ago

Those post holes will be easy to touch up later on this and Arrow Head, but will probably never get done.

As someone who has owned quite a few of these now, it is easy to see the progression Williams made during the 50s. From the early 50s with impulse flippers and a shorter cabinet and pop bumpers that still used the old style skirts switches with the wire loop but with many unique, experimental designs and layouts, to the mid 50s going with modern flippers and bumpers, to game changers in 1957 like Arrow Head, and to the late 50s with games built like a brick shithouse as their bat games were. All in all, a lot of fun. But still not a lot of them left out there.

Picked up, actually it was delivered, this Grand Slam in beautiful condition overall. But lots of little electrical problems. Down to the last one, sticky second base lock relay. Should have it done this weekend. Sadly will be going up for sale as don’t have room to keep it.

Looks to be in really nice shape. My vote for the best backglass / cabinet paint scheme in all of pinball.

Thanks, got second base working. Didn’t like the play at first. But it’s growing on me. I think it is a finesse game. Gentle well aimed shots to load the bases, then hit the pops for 1,000 each, or home run for 6,000. Still have some minor cosmetic work will try to do this weekend.

#810 3 years ago

Got my Criss Cross firing at 99%. Just waiting for a coil for the credit unit step up to get here and it’ll be working perfectly.

Next up- rebuilding the flippers and disassembling the pops for rebuilds and touch ups underneath.

I need to decide what to do for the sunken inserts. They are not loose at all, and I’m worried about breaking them if I remove them. The art is so detailed.. I think I’ll ask the gurus in the woodrail thread. Open to suggestions here as well.

I’ve decided to leave the cabinet paint as is. Plenty of names carved in but presents well for a 60 year old game.

Have a repro bg and plastics on the way from Shay. It has wood legs on it now, but It’ll have the appropriate almond cream powder coated legs as well.

All said and done, I will have spent way more time and money than the machine would ever be “worth”. But, value isn’t solely defined in dollars.

Cheers!

For the inserts, could you touch them up and then clear coat them flat? I have done that before with success.

#812 3 years ago
Quoted from Peruman:

clear coat them flat

That’s the alternative I’m considering, instead of the insert removal. My hesitation is that there is no going back to “original“ once you do that. Normally that wouldn’t bother me, but I am less inclined to permanently alter such a nice survivor.

Also, If I were to level them with clear it would have to be with something other than 2 part auto clear, as I don’t have the proper protective gear. I’ve thought about water based poly, or solar resin, but I’d hate to do something that works for a while and then creates other problems down the line.

I have another game from the same year on which someone filled the inserts with oil based poly, and the resin has turned so yellow/brown you can hardly see through it... ugh. I’m sure it looked great when they did it. But now it’s worse than if they’d left it.

I had one for a long while, it's a fun and great looking wedgie. I love the way the head blends with the backglass, except that the purple paint used is a fade magnet. Your playfield is the best I've seen, with just a bit of kickout wear... most have large wear spots on all holes, including 2nd base.

#814 3 years ago

Just took apart, cleaned and reassembled my first step up & down unit. (Replay unit). Now all I have to do is four score reels, the thermometer step unit, clean the grime off the playfield, replace the rubbers, and maybe even, play a game.

Tim m brings his nicely restored version to the NW pin show every year, I always give it a good workout.

You mean wear spots like this Dono? Mine needs lots of cleanup and I look forward to playing it.

I've always wondered if the color on the head matched the red of the backglass when it was new.

Yes, exactly like that! I've seen only one other non-faded GS (not a repaint), and it did match the BG color... it's a purple with a dash of red thrown in for good measure.

Years ago when I was just starting out in the hobby, I happened to luck out and find this World Series posted on Craigslist that was only an hour from me. It had been stored in a tractor trailer box for 25 years so the owner told me. The best example I have ever seen. Virtually no fade. I usually like to keep my games pretty original but occasionally do small mods On this game, I added two light bulbs one on either side of the Roto Target. Helps to really brighten up that area and light up the two baseball players which I think they should have done anyway. I had them wired to the Home Run feature lights opposite sides. As the Home Run feature lights would alternate, so would those two lit up baseball players. (Did the mod after this picture was taken)

WOW, beautiful example, the one's I see at shows always have that playfield wear and fade.

I see your machine shows how nice the colors on the head to the backglass match.

As a side note I see the flippers should say "Bat" on my machine they were replaced with standard one's, I checked on PBR's web site & didn't see them listed, does anyone now if there are correct replacements?

A football game with a windshield wiper??

#832 3 years ago

Don't worry, I had never heard of the game before my friend brought it to my place to be restored. There are several arcade games that employ water but this one is supposed to be extremely fun. Waiting for new custom glass for the windows until I fire it up. Always a challenge to work on a very unique game. Had to become a plumber on this one! LOL. Not a lot of information on the web but here is an auction site where one was sold a few years ago. Not this one.

In the wings......Gottlieb Mini-Pool, Stern Meteor, Evel Knievel(SS), Black Knight. (I know some aren't EM's, but I love to think about the fun that awaits!)

Rebuilding the drop target banks yesterday and today. And also doing some cab repair before priming this weekend.

The two puck bowlers are spoken for, just waiting for the backglasses to be completed..
The project puck bowler I was picking up last weekend got delayed, so to keep a little busy
and to also make more room in the garage for the barracuda that's being painted, I pulled
out the bowler that was along the wall..
Bally's small ball bowler stain on the hardwood is tough to come off, but whatever type of
paint someone painted the hardwood on this one was a bitch to smooth out.
2 layers of paint stripper, then 40 grit sand paper (I never use 40 grit), then 60 grit to
get it smooth enough to repaint..
The cab is now sanded also and wasn't too easy, but nothing like the hardwood..

What's the car in the background there "Mopar"? Looks nice! Wash that rascal!

BTW - got the new backglass in from Shay for the Slick Chick It is beautiful! Amazing job! Actually bought two off of Shay - one for my 1961 Double Barrel and one for the Slick Chick. Both were delivered within 3 days of payment and they both look great! Hat's off to another backglass producer!

That's a 1946 Plymouth. Years back, the engine and tranny's been rebuilt, but a long time Friend
that owns a garage is going through it after he's done with the barracuda which is presently in the
garage. In exchange, he's getting one of those puck bowlers (which I went through head to tail),
for his grand kids..
I haven't gone through the Slick Chick yet, but the Majorettes has a different game play which I'll
always have set up. How's the game play on Slick Chick?

I have my Slick Chick in perfect playing condition. It can be really tough if you play it without thought. You got to hit the top lanes to get points and need to hit the top target as often as possible. Then concentrate on lighting the Slick and Chick for bonus points. There is other rewards for replays but hard to get. Last thing you may need to remove some wire from the bumper coils to keep them lively. If not your game will not be long. Love the game.
