How did you do the splatter?

I used the Kemper splatter brush as stated above. Thanks for the comment.

Finished my Star Pool repaint. Had planned on bringing it to Texas Pinball Festival this year, but we all know how that turned out. Texas Pinball Festival 2021 it is!

Wanted to ask here about LEDs in EMs. I have frosted warm white LEDs in my GI on my EMs. Haven't done the controlled lamps yet since I don't have any non ghosting and the regulars flicker when coils are activated. Are non ghosting worth it and do they really work or should I stick with 47's in the controlled lamps?

Starting on my first pin as well, Rack a Ball. Have put my order in with PBR and can't wait to learn as I go. First thing is bumpers, slingshots and flippers and then clean all contacts and switches.

Gottlieb Jack in the Box that we bought out of a storage shed last month.
I started with serious vacuuming and mean green on the cabinet.
Then a fuse check. Surprisingly only one 15A where there should have been a 10.
Then a new 3 prong cord (I find it’s much easier to do this when the playfield is out and the box is sitting on the ground.
My curiousity got the better of me, so we put it up on its legs, reassembled the head, and plugged it in. Given how long it appeared to have sat, I wasn’t expecting anything. To my amazement, it powered on and didn’t go into the endless score motor spin. I pushed the replay button and it reset. Dropped in a new ball and it kicked it out to the shooter lane and showed ball 1. All the basics work, so now I can get cleaning. Nice to not have to crawl through every step of the startup sequence for once . Told my wife that I was shocked.

Plenty of cosmetics and overdue maintenance, but a great start.

Nice find! Trade you for a Little Chief that blows fuses and is stuck in a scoring motor loop!

I love the backglass on the Rock Star!

Captain Fantastic comes into the basement tomorrow to get a once over. Once it is stable, I'll do the normal shop job. Tear down, posts soaked, metal tumbled, etc. 3rd EM in the collection as well as the 3rd Kmiec game.

Just came in to possession of a Fireball. Worked when I bought it. Transit may have been tough on it, I've been told these things can be sensitive to bouncing and vibration and such. When I power it up, the cam motor kicks on, but the score doesn't reset, and the cam motor never stops.

This is my first EM, any tips on where to start?

    edit to add:

It is the 1972 Bally version.

Well, she isn't in the best shape- but she now plays great. I bought it not too long ago (posted previously)for $200 cad, it was a steal in my neck of the woods. I didn't know anything about the game, except it was cheap.

The guy selling it was nervous about selling it to me- im in my early 30s and at first glimpse probably don't look like I know too much hahaha. (I've been a refrigeration mechanic for the last 15 years) He seemed a little worried I was going to plug it in without knowing what I was doing.... like it was going to catch on fire.

Before I plugged it in, I took an in depth inspection of it. Fuses 4x the rating put in spots, a random coil wired into the back hanging in place. It had a coil on the captive alley lock on at some point and almost burnt up the machine. It also was sprayed with some sort of wd40 on the cabinet insert. Game was filthy as they come.

After a full tear down of the top and bottom of the playfield and clean up of the wd40 residue (lots of 99% isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle..it was cheap and accessible last month) it was time for lamps, rubbers and sleeves. A new coil on the captive alley and a couple homade wire gates to replace the broken ones.

It worked but had several issues with misadjusted switches. After going through all relays and switches today, its up and running as needed.

It could still use some cleanup in the backbox but for now.. its time to play.

(Ps... this was the first em I put leds in. Not a fan of them at all)

I've been using LEDs behind the backglass and under the playfield, incandescents up top. It seems to be a compromise that works for me, retaining just enough of that warm and fuzzy feel, while cutting down on the heat in a lot of places.

    Great find!

Most likely score reel switches need attention. These must register all zeros to start a game.

Updated Spin Out shots. Just awaiting the car decal to cover the wear spot this week and also the two small red tent lane guides for the outside-top of the playfield.

Hoping to trouble shoot the remaining game-play things today.

Putting my Spooksville on roller casters, makes for more skakerball action fun.

Quik question?: Have you determined the method as to how to change the high score to beat for replays?

My Spooksville is in pieces right now. Tried to post pics but they won't post for some reason. The one that did post posted twice...lol. I haven't even thought that far ahead yet. I just hope it flips when I put it all back together!

Getting ready to start up my Spanish Eyes after what has apparently been many years. I was inspecting the backbox and found a missing coil on the match unit. Looks like this game never had a reset coil, this being a match unit. Looking at the schematic, the coil should be an A-22-500. There are three loose wires in the area and one looks like it was soldered in two places base on the second strip location. Can someone upload a picture of their Spanish Eyes or another game with the same unit so I can make sure I get this right?

Edit: I found the manual and answered my own question.

Got Capt. Fantastic downstairs this weekend. All cleaned up and waiting on a drop target reset coil for it to be back up and running. It was cooked. Got the game for a great deal because it was popping the 10 amp fuse upon game start. Found the reason to be a dead short on that coil. The main fuse block was hacked up into what looked like a fire hazard. Fixed that and waiting on the coil and a few other parts. All pop bodies and skirts were cracked and chipped up.

Well it’s been a “work in progress” mainly because I was working on someone else’s machines. But now that I’ve got time on my hands I’ve been able to work on all of mine. Last one to get running ! Thanks to “Rolf” and “HowardR” for the tips and help along the way.

Now if I can find someone to refinish the cabinet and head. (I’m not artistic in any way)

Double Barrel wasn't originally a mod cabinet pin. At least as far as I'm aware. Supposedly they went back to the square cabinet with Ten Spot. The game produced before Double Barrel. Anyway the cab is cool and of the right era.

it has to be a transplant....

I got the head with a more modern cabinet in SC, but the playfield was toast. I then found a beautiful playfield and a backglass (about a 5) but the other one was a 1.5..lol, and it came with this shelf style cabinet out of Denver. I've been working with the guys at the serial number data base (Jay) and this cab was an original DB. So the head does not match the cab, but it wired up perfectly and after months of cleaning and finally getting back to her, she's actually playing again! (And she fits in on that side of the game room nicely)
