Friends don’t let friends go LCD!

I have Tron and was considering the upgrade. How do you like it?

#2902 3 years ago
Quoted from Mad_Dog_Coin_Op:

A question to fellow arcade owners. I'm a purest and all my arcades have CRTs. Recently I purchased a High Score Save kit for my Tron that also plays Satan's Hallow. While the Tron looks perfect on my CRT, Satan's Hallow does not. The Tron burn-in is very visible on the much lighter background on Satan's Hallow and getting a good replacement tube is getting tough. As a result, I'm considering for the first time a LCD monitor replacement. So my question is - Should I do it?

No.

It's great but takes a bit of effort to install. You have to swap out a lot of chips on all 3 boards. They are all socketed so it's not that bad. The worse part is installing the daughter card. It spans 4 sockets. It is tough getting all those pins lined up.

Besides all the blah, blah, blah you hear about switching from a tube to a LCD, with Bally/Midway MCR games, there is a real problem. It is a well known thing in the arcade circles that the Ballyt/Midway MCR series games (I.e., Tron, Satan's Hallow, Tapper, etc.) have sync problems on an LCD. So besides the look of an arcade game on an LCD monitor being bad, in this case you will have other problems as well. At least for Tron, I wouldn't even consider it unless you do thorough research and know an LCD make/model for sure that won't have sync problems.

Can't say you haven't been warned.

Thanks for the warning but I'm well aware of the problem you mentioned. Included with the purchase of the LCD monitor is a chip that corrects the video issue. It seems Arcade Shop is the only vendor stepping up to the address the issue. At this point I'm going to wait until I'm done with my restore and re-evaluate the final results. I do hate seeing the Tron cone floating in the middle of screen when playing Satan's Hallow.

I like the classics: Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Centipede, Return of the Jedi and my pride and joy - a Star Wars cockpit. Two different pics of the four arcades at different times in the evolution of my Star Wars game room.

The restoration of my Tron is complete. I still have the CRT for now. Hoping to find a replacement without burn-in soon.

Anyone have time and interest (or know someone who might) in doing a light restoration on a cockpit arcade game? It needs some side art mainly. Looking for someone on the east coast. I just don't have the room to do that project at the place where it's going in MA. Can get the game to you and then from you after the restoration work is done. Would obviously pay for time and efforts and parts. Please feel free to PM me for more details if you know anyone. Thanks.

I am looking for some arcade machines but I have drawn a line in the sand in terms of what I am willing to pay(I gave up). Some of these machines remind me of the housing market, where they have doubled in value in just the last five years. It may be wishful thinking but I would like a nice $3500 Zeke's Peak delivered to Denver, a nice $3000 Wacko delivered to Denver, and a nice $1000 Super Sprint delivered to Denver. Anyone want to hook a brother up-pm me.

#2913 3 years ago

It might not be considered a real arcade game by some, but I really enjoy my Playchoice 10. With a huge catalog of amazing games that all use the same basic joystick layout, it is the perfect system to play in an arcade cabinet.

Good luck getting a zekes peak delivered for that. I'd like one as well but they sell for that without shipping. Heck ice made icbs pull 3200

3500 delivered Zekes? I want that deal.

Like I said-"It may be wishful thinking".

Had one lined up last year for $3500 and the deal fell through. Really don't want to spend $4000 plus $500 shipping on one. I may just try and find a decent ICB, it seems like you can still find those for a decent price. I have completely given up on Wacko, and also gave up on $6000 Star Wars cockpits. You have to draw a line in the sand at some point.

Sorry man, but don't really have any sympathy here. It comes across as, I know these are worth more, but sell me things at a discount. If you want a deal scour fb,cl, etc like the rest of us. Sitting around asking someone to give up hundreds of dollars is kinda messed up.

Posted these on the game room thread as well, but here they are as well. I own:

-NeoGeo red 4-slot cab with SSIII, King of the Monsters, Strikers 1945 Plus, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Magician Lord, and Fatal Fury Special. I also have a couple of the 161-in-1, 189-in-1 MVS carts plus Pandora's boxes I can plug in there if needed. As you can see from the pictures, that NeoGeo CRT is still surprisingly bright with great colors!

-Sega New Net City candy cab with rotated monitor dedicated to shmups and other vertical games (multicade PC).

-Chewlix (Chinese Taito Vewlix clone) with a multicade PC as well (4TB HD with MAME, Dreamcast, Atomiswave, Saturn, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Gamecube, Wii, PS1, PS2, etc.)

When you say projects, which way you going? I assume to major havoc as the cab is dressed as tempest. I Think Takeman on klov made a panel for tempest to use the roller control. Keep an eye out for it at the repro controller. If you happen to be going the other way, the major havoc pcb and it’s tempest adapter is worth a ton of money.. good luck on the project.

Scott451 on KLOV made an FPGA boardset for Tempest that also plays Major Havoc and Omega Race (with Quantum to come later). I got the boardset last week but as it's an early adopter version there are still some bugs to work out -- one of them is certain spinner opto boards aren't compatible with it yet. He's sending me a replacement opto board, which should be here tomorrow. Once that's in I should be good to go.

Pretty impressive stuff as he reworked MH to work on a vertical monitor, so you can play it on a standard Tempest cab without modification.

I been working on fixing up my Wacko this past week. It had a couple of blown out corners I had to fix. I'm on the fence about a total restore on it. I do have the art kit if I decide to go that down that path.

I would not. Repo art is at best close, but not quite equal to the original. Your art looks great.

Not sure if wacko has a plate or stapled in holder for the leveler mount, but if its stapled, eventually those rollers your using will rip the mount out of the bottom of the cabinet. Use a 4 screw plate roller or a plate mount on your cab.

The plates are screwed in but still on the light duty side. I'll swap them out if I need to. I have wheels on my games so I can move them around easy in my shop. As for the restore, I really am on fence. Being in California it is tough to get an oil-based paint match and the art is OK but not great. My fiberglass Bondo patch work is drastically improving the look of the game but I can't get a good color match. If I do a restore I would break out the paint gun and hit it with Rust-Oleum classic navy (which is very close). My art package seems good. It came from This Old Game and is no longer available. I'll finish fixing it up and reevaluate the final look before I move forward with the total restore. It is best to not be haste.

Yes. The Pioneer 8000 laser disc player has 2 video outputs, so it was pretty simple.

Here's my one and only.

It's actually a 48 in 1 game.

I assembled it, as you can obviously see, from a number of different games that were sitting in a warehouse that would otherwise have been thrown away. I'm guessing the marquee and monitor glass may have some value to them. The wood paneling vinyl was coming off in a lot of places so just spray painted some textured paint throughout.

Since the game was originally a horizontal monitor I had to mount the chassis to the side of the cabinet perpendicular since a vertical orientation got in the way of the flat back door. The monitor was actually part of the last CRT production runs by Vision Pro.

I finished my Ms. Pac Man. There are better cabinets for sure - this one looks like its been rolled down a hill - but what 38 year old doesn't look like it's had some miles? And this thing was running off an ungrounded LAMP CORD when I got it. I won't rework the cabinet as it's just not in my skill level at this time, and it probably isn't cost justified at this time.

New bezel artwork, new marquee, rebuilt power supply, new fuse blocks, new RF filter, replaced on board amplifier, new buttons, reworked joystick.

The meter read 47362 plays on it, meaning it grossed $11840 in its lifetime.

Nice - to me it looks like you have a plywood cabinet version of the game. Those are way better than the particle board version. If you decide to redo it it is one of the easier cabs to redo. Just make sure you paint it and don’t do the crappy decals. I kinda of like the vintage look on that one myself.

I’m going to restore my first arcade cabinet, a nintendo Playchoice, and I’ve been debating using paint vs vinyl on the sides. Is there a consensus on what to use? It seems like it might be vinyl now.

Ms. Pac looks beautiful. Part of me thinks you should have left the original marquee - it faded at about the same rate as the cabinet and the colors actually matched pretty well!!
