Hey all, I'm just getting into pinball --finally at a point in my life where I can afford it.

I just bought an SBM and fear I may have made a mistake. Love the game, but its a lot rougher than I thought. After reading Vids playfield restoration tutorial I realized how bad it was...guess ignorance is bliss sometimes. I made a mistake I will NEVER make again and bought it site unseen... the guy said it was clean...hahaha!

Anyway trying to assess where I'm at and what / how much to do. Any input us appreciated.

All inserts are cupped. A lot of checking. Most paint is intact but dirty...and I fear clear coated over. There is also a bunch of clear protectant all over the place-- some curling. Thinner than mylar...not sure what it is.

I have a new set of plastics and new BG. Have LEDs and it has new blue led score panels. The cabinet is just ok, but I'm confident I can do that part. As for funtionality-- all seems to work well.
Soo... any bright ideas on where to start / how.much to do?

If anyone wants other /specific pics, let me know

Thanks in advance!!

I think that playfield looks great for that game. Clean it up, new rubber, wax and enjoy. Unless you plan on keeping the game long term, I wouldn't do much more than that. Any money you put into it beyond that, you are unlikely to get back. I see a lot of first time buyers dump a grand into a game, new legs, new backglass, new plastics, etc. and try and sell the game for a grand more than they paid. Then they get upset thinking they got ripped off when the game doesn't sell.

Step 1 - Buy Novus 2 and clean the living heck out of it. Then decide what to do next.

Be careful of reading HEP threads or restoration guides, they are great but unless you are planning to actually fully restore your game (which probably doesn't make sense monetarily on SBM) you will have an unrealistic idea of how much wear is acceptable on a game.

You do have some peeling mylar on your game, I would just trim away the parts that are sticking up and would affect the ball.

Remember these are 30+ year old games and some degree of wear is expected. Get the game cleaned up as best you can and see how it plays. Then go from there.

Ok, thanks guys, that makes me feel better- think I just needed some reassurance. I guess I'll try and cut away the loose mylar and get to cleaning. I plan to keep the game for the foreseeable future. Not looking to sell/make money on it or anything.

As always, this site is awesome and everyone is so nice and helpful-- love it!

If the game was mylared over wear you should be able to remove it easily with freeze spray method.

Use magic eraser to remove as much of the ball swirls as you can.

You could buy a playfield protector which would help with the cupped inserts and prevent future wear.

You think the playfield looks bad? This is the little gem I am working on and plan to un-hack and restore.
