My vuk keeps randomly firing twice even when there are no balls locked. If a ball does get locked it ends up getting kicked out because of this. I checked all the optos in switch test and originally I found the middle opto out. I reflowed the solder and it registered again. But my issue with the vuk didn't go away. Any ideas?

It the opto registering in switch edge test with no ball breaking the beam? Did you clean and possible dust out with canned air or q-tip with alcohol?

You will have to excuse me cause I'm learning as I go but when I put my finger between, it registers. Is there another way to check? I'll pull it off and clean tomorrow.

You're doing it right.
Clean the optos.

The problem is the VUK coil is firing when it shouldn't. So it thinks a ball is blocking the beam. So, in the service menu you put it in switch edge test. When you pass you finger through it registers. But if you don't put your finger in the way and just shake the machine a bit as if you are playing a game does it register?

This would tell you either the optos are dirty, cold solder joint, alignment off between sending and receiving opto. This is all good since a false registering opto is usually a very small, cheap and easy problem compared to most. I have had the optos just get enough pinball dust on them to be close to breaking the beam.

All good info. I'll try to clean later tonight if I get a chance.

I did have one other issue that is minor. My upper flipper wont stay in cradle position if I keep holding the button. I hit the button, it goes through its motion and immediately drops back down. I guess I'll have to pull the assy out to see if some solder joints don't look good.

The flipper coil will have 3 wires soldered to the lugs. One will be for the low power or "hold". If you're lucky you will just find a poor connection. Bad solder, loose, frayed wire . . . Check that easy stuff first.

Well I cleaned the optos and they were filthy but it did not fix the problem. The weird thing I noticed was that sometimes I would drain the ball but the game didn't end until after the vuk attempted to clear itself twice. There was no ball in there but after it attempted to clear it the game would end. I give up for the night. Any other ideas are welcome.

One more shot at the opto.
Put the game in switch test.
BANG on the PF. Let it sit for a while. BANG on the PF.
Any opto switch closures reported?

Check the wire connections to the optos. The solder joints there fail sometimes.
Reseat the connectors to the optos.
Reseat the connectors on the 7-opto board that is screwed to the bottom of the PF.
Measure your 12VU (12 VDC unregulated) test point. Low 12VU will cause "jittery" optos...but we don't see that kind of thing very often.

I have actually been seeing this more often. But the cause has been people adding mods like under game lighting that pulls the 12v too low. But yes, I recommended the switch edge test / machine shaking earlier.

OK I think I pinpointed the problem with that vuk. The right and left locks are closed but the center is open. That is the switch that I had to reflow.

I did try banging on the table and every once in a while that center lock switch would trigger. I'm going to try to reflow the whole thing and if that doesn't work I will replace both sides since they are cheap. Is that what you guys would do?

Replaced the opto and that fixed the vuk issue. I had to replace another trough switch that was intermittently working. Now I'm all good. Its playing without issue now. Thanks guys!
