Quoted from Ballypinball:

i would move those wires near the metal gear in that picture

It was all disconnected and loose when I took that pic.....All tidy when reassembled

#352 5 years ago

Didn't like that the connections aren't keyed on the board....Could easy be connected backwards and generally frail through the game ( the USB connections are just horrid).Wish they would have addressed that...Hopefully, connection issues don't arise down the road, as the game skakes away.

#353 5 years ago
Quoted from knockerlover:

replacing USB cables with ones with ferrite cores

I used ferrite chokes on my replacement DVI cables, but have never heard of ferrite core USB cables...Typo?....

Yup, they're just asking to get stripped.

Ha... ye of little faith..

Everything running perfectly EXCEPT my tongue is no longer magnetized (won't grab the ball)....Good grief....Ideas?

Appears to also be an odd opto in the mech that I can't make sense of.

Not sure where to post this stuff...Have other questions as I am diving....Don't want to derail this awesome thread with other things I'm finding in the final rev of the game...Miles thread, generic Alien one?

We're all in it together, obviously...mark

#357 5 years ago

What's your tongue look like? Where's the opto?

Drats....Away from house for a couple...Will post some pics a bit later

Tongue is a permanet magnet. The rubber boot can hinder its ability to contact the ball well. Play with the rubber tip to get more magnet exposed

Quoted from flynnibus:

Well....I'll confess it here, and throw in a few pics.........

a) got the new mini actuator in, calibrated perfectly, everything worked, but didn't grab the ball......check
b) upon reassembly, I believe I'm seeing an opto or something inside the jaw of the xeno....check
c) stepped away after whining to you guys for the evening (learned the stepping away part from Lloyd).
d) went down just a couple hours ago, and was determined to solve the mystery
e) pulled the xeno back off (quite efficient at it now)....dissassembled, and saw the "opto" firmly inside the left jaw
f) decided to yank it off...and BAMM, it was the f**king magnet w shrink wrap, that had come off the end of the tongue!!!!
g) reassembled, tested.....all is well.
h) not sure what that tiny screw does on the xeno board, but certainly doesn't control the magnet (that's a plain, natural one). Fortunately didn't touch the setting.

Moral of my wasted Saturday night - no more Bourbon inspired "fixes". Yes, got the jaw dropping much more consistently w new stepper, but completely forgot how the damn tongue was supposed to look. Completely escaped me at the time. Don't panic, step away, and hope the mess of the prior night can be fixed, which was the case this time....

On to switches, troughs and other adventures, but had enough Alien for one weekend......mark

Glad you fixed it.. the tiny screw sets the current limit on the stepper motor driver board effectively controlling how much power is provided to the stepper motor. More power = more torque/speed. It should be carefully set to the motors specifications, but if the motor isn’t operating as intended.. I.e. not pulling the rack gear past the point where it strips the ball from the magnetic tip.. not much other choice but to increase the current or somehow decrease the magnetic force on the tip.

Makes sense now......interesting adjustment, as I guess a minor tweak could help, if needed... I'll be staring at the mech in my sleep, I'm afraid.....also found a loose wire on one of my weapons targets, not allowing me to collect them, hence no blinky extra ball light to alternate. Fixed as well...productive evening in Alienland.......

Quoted from MK6PIN:

FYI, you can also earn weapons by hitting a weapon target on the skill shot... or winning a scene... or occasionally from Mother Mystery... so lots of ways to get 'em. Which is good, because the later ones are the really valuable ones.

Oh awesome ferret!!! Thank you so much. I didn’t know how to earn them.

Some more diagnostics on machine C's backbox display not working, and appears we have a faulty LCD driver board. We have spares, but they're apparently programmed for the playfield LCD and not the backbox one...so back to AliExpress for some more pre-programmed boards. In the mean time, I switched the backbox displays between machines B and C.

And out. You watched that happen in real time pretty much. I typed this last post while waiting for the oven to cool down

Argh. The last photo of the complete board didn’t upload and I had to run out. I’ll do the LED side tonight and post later.

I’ll test in the machine tonight and spare LEDs should be available from tomorrow.

#374 5 years ago

WoooooHooooo!!! Again - THANK YOU TimeBandit!!

#375 5 years ago

Here they are!

Panel splits into rows of 8. I will ship them as rows of 8 with headers included but not soldered on. That way I can send them flat in a card as a letter. Postage will be affordable that way.

Is there a reason you went with black instead of white?

So you could quickly tell if you were dealing with an OEM or a replacement.

Great Job Michael

I love TimeBandit more than lamp and lightning kitty combined.. Does anyone know how many of the tall 5 SMD towers are in each game off hand? If not I can go count I guess..

#393 5 years ago

Too funny!!!!

Mike has been given a lifetime pass on that sacred thread....

Alien way more fun to screw around with, and the game itself continues to amaze...Nothing quite like it

Question...

So, cointaker sent me a shaker-motor. The plug does not appear to match anything on the IO board....

Where the hell does it go??? I found a plug but it seemed inverted and...not correct.

#400 5 years ago
