An original theme about Thomas Edison would be good.
Another pinsider had mentioned that in another thread.
I think that would be a very good idea.

Also, Volcano would be a good natural disaster pin, like Earthshaker.
Lava could flow out onto the playfield.

World War II / military theme.

I think a WWII theme (Axis and Allies style) would be great; probably the best of any potential military themed pin. Other really good potential themes for a military theme would be:

1) WWI
2) American Civil War
3) Napoleonic Wars
4) Cold War
5) Hypothetical Modern World War

You warmonger! You! I think you hit the nail on the head with the Civil War. We would only need two versions, the blue pro, and the grey premium, and it would give pinsiders something to argue over for the rest of eternity.

Someone also mentioned Tesla . Ben Heck is working on a Tesla versus Edison pin .

An American Civil War pin would rock. I don't think it would be a total bomb in Europe either; they have always been fascinated with our civil war. I think WW2 would sell better as a theme though, here and in Europe.

How many Axis LEs do you think they could sell in the USofA?

I agree that are not going to sell any Axis specific LE's here in the US . . . I would imagine they would just do one LE and it need not even be country specific (air power of WW2 LE or something like that where every country could have a plane featured).

#163 6 years ago

It might not even be legal to sell an Axis-themed machine in Germany, they have some pretty strict anti-Nazi laws there.

Agreed ! I would buy one if I could. I was very interested in a Wargame called "The blue against the Grey"

True for me as well, although I would prefer a WW1 pin (if only because of 100th anniversary). Visit any small village in France with a current population of 100 and a list of WW1 casualties of several dozen names and you will understand why it left such a strong mark. Also much less politically sensitive than WW2.

Oh yeah, baby! Bring it on, bring it on!

Other non-licensed themes I would consider:

- Rome (not necessarily the TV series, so with or without license) would make a great theme.
- Da Vinci
- Jules Verne (got it: Captain Nemo)
- Solar system exploration
- (of course) Napoleon...
- World traveller: explore countries / states / cities... bring souvenirs.
- Periodic table of elements (Mendeleiev's pin... transform it into a "Breaking bad" pin if you need a license and want to avoid a Nerd theme I would probably be the only one to buy...)
- The crusade against the Cathars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathars). Our civil war... XIII century. OK, OK, another game with a single customer
- some romantic island, vacation style, honeymoon type pin. The wife may like it (assuming you actually organize a trip there as well!)

I would love to see a pinball machine based around the periodic table that licensed Tom Lehrer's song The Elements (where he sings the first 102 chemical elements to Gilbert & Sullivan's Modern Major General tune).

Quoted from trilogybeer:

I agree , Some of just the three color stenciled cabinets were some of the best looking cabinets ever made in pinball .It's an artform that has been lost in pinball would love to see it return .

Chimera for the win! Love the total art package on Paragon!

This is true. However, it could sell in Japan just fine. The arcade game "Guerrilla War" by SNK had you playing as Castro Che Guevara. Needless to say, those names & references were removed for the American version.

How about themes based on states or countries? FLORIDA could have
the player dodging gators. Hurricane multiball would be a natural.
CALIFORNIA has all kinds of possibilites. Surfing in Malibu, winding your
way through the streets of San Francisco and LA. KANSAS would have a
flat, wide open playfield with grain silos as pop bumpers. Nike missles
would pop up from under the playfield unexpectedly. And cows. Lots of cows!

The one non-original these I'd like to see (yes, I know you didn't ask)
would be based on the TV show MUNSTERS. Lots of great possibilites
just like Adams Family.

world domination, like a giant game of risk. Map of the world on backbox. Execute certain skill shots to take over another continent. Continents light up on backbox when you conquer them.

#173 6 years ago

Trypophobia might be a good theme that has not been done before.

#174 6 years ago

That's a creepy one. Maybe a ghost pirate game from the broken down ship graveyard. Real smoke and cannons along with the best known pirates.Rebels are always a great selling point along with a great ghostly picture painted cabinet, possibly glow in the dark.We could tie in the underwater theme with the sharks a so on,but also add the ghostly past that we have only read about. Could work...

#175 6 years ago

Here is an original theme and it is being worked on now. Hopefully he will make kits available to sell somehow.

Colloseum/gladiator (not the movie) theme, fight your way to the top, have under playfield area as per the real colloseum, could be combined with the hippodrome (chariot racing).

#177 6 years ago

A Hooters Pin. C'mon, you know you'd like it...

#178 6 years ago

Volcano's already been done before, and it's a pretty cool game to boot.

I was really looking forward to the theme Highway had planned before. My wife (thank christ) and I both agree that the 'new' pin space is sorely lacking in more adult themes. And I'm not talking about the "porno" games, but there's definitely a place for adult humor and art style out there. Just going to take a company with balls to do it. Guess we'll see how Nordman's table for Multimorphic turns out.

#179 6 years ago

Agatha Christie......Murder on the Pinball express theme.....Poirot

Sherlock Holmes, Sweeny Todd, Jack the Flipper those sorts of themes have a slightly more older generation theme.

How about an Mount Olympus/Greek god type of theme, plenty of myths and legends to pick from as well.

This thread shows that there is a ton of stuff that would make a great change from the movie/music tie-ins, maybe Stern should make a one in three or four original decision in thier schedule, although one would be a start

#180 6 years ago
Quoted from nighttaco:

How about an RPG Pin, where you can advance your character each time you play, find new items, etc. Idk how possible that would be, but it would be cool to have some sort of character to progress and build up just like in rpg's on pc etc. I would've said a World of Warcraft themed but that would be licensed, but that would sell well......

There is a zen table called epic quest that does this theme perfectly. They have another original table called sorcerers lair that is even better.

I would just like to see a pin with a Zaney/crazy theme like ninjas vs pirates or robots vs aliens or something that fits really well with ramps like a crazy waterfall theme or train robbery or roller coasters or skateboarding/ surfing. Or just something that would have mass appeal like zombie/shark/assassin/bounty hunter/civil war/ww1/ww2/mma/gator

Does a pin even need a theme? Could pinball just be its own theme where a kid goes to an arcade and has to beat a bunch of different pinball games to get to wizard mode?

#181 6 years ago

A pin called "Pig" served with plenty of bacon.

Return to Haunted House.
- A sequel to the Gottlieb classic
- Three levels
- Original orchestral soundtrack redone and up to modern standards.
- Multiball

Some proper suggestions, but still nothing wins it from mine Serengeti pin!

#185 6 years ago

I was curious and decided to count up the number of original vs. licensed suggestions in this thread. I tried not to count suggestions twice, and "upvotes" of suggestions were not counted. I will say that there was some ambiguity here and there (e.g., travel the country vs. travel the world, funfair vs. amusement park, etc.). Whatever. I wasn't very detailed about it, so take this count with a grain of salt.

Original Theme suggestions: 65
Licensed Theme suggestions: 42
Sequel of an original suggestions: 3

Kind of interesting results. The fact that ~40% of all suggestions in a thread asking for original themes were actually licensed is very telling. As some one else mentioned, maybe the demand for original themes isn't as high as we think it is.

Exactly.

If Stern was even having the slightest thoughts of doing an unlicensed/original themed pin, reading this thread would pretty much confirm that they are right to just keep doing the licensed themes!

#187 5 years ago

I'm not sure that people misunderstanding the original question equates to an accurate analysis like you're doing. But interesting to think about anyway.

Good point. As a control, you should start a thread asking for licensed themes and ill count how many mistaken original themes we get. My guess is not many.

That's kind of twisted logic. . Why not start a poll asking if you would like to see an original theme, yes or no.

I'm working on Wrath of Olympus - a Greek themed pinball machine. Check out my thread and the very first flips from my prototype. Planning on having a flipping machine at the Chicago Expo this year.

Really nice ! Love the theme, cool artwork and really interesting PF layout. Lots of potential with all these shots you can only make with the upper flippers.

Good work T-8hundy, artwork and pin itself look awesome, Greek Mythology eh I knew I was on to something there so much scope to work with. Good luck at the expo if you get there, bit too far for me to pop over and try a few games unfortunately.

In Europe or the US? Any other clues you could let slip. I can't think of any reason for disney not to have any pins.

There is a Disney video mode on www.facebook.com/pinnovating right now.

I call it Bartender.
Think of all the great shots.
Shaker Motor for the Martini Mode Multiball
One of the shots could be Front Bumper (Actual Drink):
3/4 ounce Peppermint Schapps
3/4 ounce Southern Comfort

Layered in order
Served in a shot glass

Enjoy!

Has there been a norseman/viking theme done? odin, crows, thor, trolls, viking shields and longboats, axes?

i still say blue and grey, where you can chose which side to play as. skill sets change depending on which side you play for. Or play 2 man, one player gets north, the other south. cannons, soldier drop downs. ironside ships, monitor and merimack.get high score abnd hear gettysburg address opening line.

A special ops pin would be pretty cool!!!

Just imagine every mode being a mission.

Bally Viking (1980). And if I recall, there was a EM Viking teamed pin by williams.

It would have to take your 6k, play through all the wizard modes then refund your 6k right under your nose without you knowing it had happened, otherwise it would not be a special ops pin it would just be an ops pin

Come to think of it I'm pretty sure I never knew I had one once Only clue was the bacon rashers in my fridge had been liberated.......
