In a hobby filled with bonehead decisions made by pinball companies, often times Pinside becomes a pretty negative place - and for good reason. These messages need to be heard so the end product is better.

That being said, it's just as important to highlight when a company really knocks it out of the park. And today, that company is Stern. And that game is Jaws.......

REVENGE!!??

Seriously - this amazing 8bit NES inspired, nostalgia overload "challenge mode" is truly a ground breaking achievement. I've been active in this hobby since 2015 and I've never seen such attention to detail injected into a new mode before as it literally transforms the experience entirely. This needs to get more attention as it's brilliant.

Revenge includes elements taken from Mike Tyson's Punch Out to Super Mario. The power ups and the story text taken directly from video games (like contra 3 - hell yes) . The laugh you hear when you encounter the "boss" for each level. The quality of the sprites and how well they nailed the style. The amazing 8bit music throughout. The creative rules and story. The list goes on and on.

And we've seen these challenge modes attempted before (including multimorphic). This is no random side mode. It's actually fun. It's truly a different way to take advantage of the same pinball machine that's taking up space by injecting an entirely new value proposition for the owner to experience. New LCD display graphics, new music, new way to use the current hardware (action button for chomping) - the quick in and out nature which is a stark contrast to the normal game. It's a brilliant idea.

For those that are unaware - see the video below.

Thank you Keith and team. You truly are innovating. Stern - well done for supporting this as well. Now reduce LE's back to 500, saving your premiums from collapsing in value and scale the price of games based on theme and/or designer and we'll be cooking again!

Side note - Elizabeth is a GREAT addition to the Stern team and the pinball industry. Breath of fresh air - she’s genuine and super talented both in programming and pinball skills alike.

This is amazing. I love the integration. Art is also spot on.

I definitely see this as a "future" for pinball. In a similar way, but easier than pinball 2000

Guessing these well done Stern should be on per item bassis ...

Unless you think , renting games to corporations and Costco Home Editions are somewhat ground breaking?

#4 11 days ago

Now they just need to lower the prices.

#5 11 days ago

It's making me seriously debate picking up a used HUO

#6 11 days ago

Well said.
I agree 1000%

It’s truly a fantastic mode.
An Immersive 8bit world.
Well made. Well thought out.

And just so Fun! It’s a blast.

#7 11 days ago

Yeah I had a lot of fun playing this. The music was my favorite part.

Side note: It always takes me a little bit to remember how to change game modes. I tend to accidently start a regular game before figuring it out. I wish there was a better/more intuitive way.

Also

I have no idea how I’ll ever make Level 5. Lol
Beating 4 bounty hunters. Wow

The "clip" is over an hour and half long. My modern attention span is in meltdown mode.

#10 10 days ago

Agreed this is definitely fun. Having different software games on the same machine expands the enjoyment.

Keep in mind that Multimorphic has been doing this kind of thing since 2018. It’s not a new concept by any means.

I find it cool that others are doing it now.

They will never lower the price - but I would like to see them going back to variable LE production #s - ie Munsters - 600, EHoH - 400, Star Trek - 800, etc. 1000 should only be for Elwin and/or "super" themes.

VenomLE, WickLE should have been a run of 500 - whereas 1000 JawsLE was the appropriate #.

If they underestimate demand, simply create premium re-skins (GZ70, SW Comic, AC/DC Luci etc) that are unlimited.

#12 10 days ago

That is dope

#14 10 days ago

I just wish they would put even half this level of effort, enthusiasm and creativeness into finishing/fixing the EHOH code.

Yes, it is impossible to please some people. Zero F@(ks to those people, lots of love to the ones who appreciate and love the games and what goes into them.

Jaws is an awesome game, we love it and appreciate the effort Stern has put in to it. Kudos to team Elwin.

i hope this is something they start to do for all their games . i hope bond is next .maybe elevator action style

I think Jurassic Park Home Edition with IC for 5000 bucks is a pretty good deal.

Jaws is quickly becoming my favorite game. The main game has so much packed into it already and now we also have this fast paced and really fun separate game.

It’s perfect for when I don’t have a ton of time to play and still encourages me to keep coming back to try and get further. I never would’ve expected to get anything more than bits from the main game pulled into their own challenge modes. The fact that they created this entirely separate experience with its own assets and music is incredible.

#20 10 days ago

Stern is doing something good by creating more than one way to step up to the game and play. There’s been more and more of this, especially from Elwin’s games.

#21 10 days ago

This is rad. Agreed, we need to sing praise when its due.

#22 10 days ago

Agreed 100%

There is no shortage of folks whining and complaining when pinball companies screw up. Everyone is RIGHT THERE to make sure they hear about it.

But what about when they do something unexpectedly great?

Honestly, JAWS THE REVENGE adds a significant amount of value to this machine for me. It's essentially a whole new ruleset, and on its own, better than most pinball machines out there.

That's worth screaming about so that Stern, and other companies, see that this is something we most definitely want.

#23 10 days ago

I only watched the first couple rounds, but this looks like a fun new way to play

Take Elvira's name out yo mouth. They did 3 other "limited" runs of it..lol

People can scream all they want but sales are louder than words!

same to your opinion

#27 10 days ago

Stern is best with code. Personally don’t care about the extras but more options that owners didn’t have to pay additional for are good.

Is this mode accessible when playing on location? I only saw a few minutes of the video but looked like they selected it via the coin box. I don't own this machine but revenge mode looks like fun and I'd like to try it!

#29 9 days ago

I'm kinda torn on this. It's an alright gimmic, but I play pinball because it's not a video game.

Make the shots, progress the mode. What is not pinball about that?

I like the rules and sound, just not sure regarding the graphical implementation. I didn't watch the 2h long video though, admittedly.

Yup! I've only played it on location. It does require Stern insider and 10 "teeth" to play (as well as a credit). Just hold down both flippers until you get to select game play

Just played this mode for about an hour today on route. It's so damn fun. Highly recommend trying it out.
