slightly updated code - wanted to get a few more sounds in (TREX MB and some more shoot hers for the raptor cage....which has a ton of random call outs for it).

I'm a bit surprised by some of the comments/complaints in this thread.. People just seem to blindly update code without even reading what's been changed and then coming here to ask about it. The read-me file isn't all that long.. The speaker settings is the same. It's clearly stated that LE's now default to 4 ohms. Why are people asking if that is normal?

Now on to your issue. Here it is.. Straight from the read-me file:

- Mosquito in Amber Accessory Shooter Knob - many more lamp effects added during Amber Pops / Slings / Targets / Ramps

Cheers,

Mike

Because a) now the game sounds like shit; b) Keith said just change it back to 8 ohms so it doesn't sound like shit; and c) when you DO change it back to 8 ohms (which makes it all sound great again), it automatically defaults back to 4 ohms. You don't see that as a problem?

a) Yes it sounds like shit at 4 ohms; b) I now do this every time I turn on the machine; c) annoys the hell out of me. Yes it's an annoyance at this point. It's the same for everybody with an LE. However the question keeps coming up. Every day. "Why is it changing to 4 ohms"... Because it's been coded like that now. Send Stern a bug report if you don't like it! I did!

My response was more about the "why are the shooter lights flashing?". Ummmm.. Because it's been programmed that way now?? As clearly stated in the code update.... BTW I find that annoying too.. A flashing shooter button means some sort of action in other games. Press the button to get something. A flashing shooter knob that means nothing is an attention diversion I don't need when I am playing lol. They need a human factors specialist on the team at Stern lol. I'm a pilot in my real life.. A flashing light is meant to focus your attention and usually means do something NOW.

Sorry if I sounded like a bit of a DB.. Monday morning. Tired.. Caffeine hadn't kicked in yet lol.. Here in the North Pole.. oops I mean Canada, it isn't a holiday today

Have a nice Monday y'all!

Hi All, seeking some help. I have downloaded the update, unzipped to PC, formatted a USB drive as FAT32, and copied just the two .spk files to the root of the zip drive. I put the USB in CN9 on the board in the back cabinet, and I get the option to install the update when I turn on my premium. Here's where my problem seems to start, I hit select, the screen flashes "Insert USB" or whatever the message is, then right back to the "Press select to update, press Volume +/- to change, press back to exit"
I seem to be stuck in an endless loop. If anyone knows what I might be doing wrong, I'm all ears . Thanks in advance!
I've tried two different USB sticks btw as well, same problem.

I had the same problem. Used a different USB stick to resolve. Not the same size/brand... Totally different one. If I remember. the 4gb one didn't work. the 16GB one did.

Thanks, I'll see if I can scrounge up a different one, or order something. Any recommendation on the brand/specs that did work by chance? Maybe mine are just too old (10 years or so).

Quoted from delt31:

It parallels/mimics the Amber target Insert in the pops. It starts off a slow pulse on the plunge and then turns off if the target is not lit, then if lit ... rapidly pulses and matches the insert until the Amber target through the pops is hit and the insert extinguishes... and so on. I like the feature since the insert is in the backfield, I can immediately see that the insert is lit in my peripheral vision down at the shooter rod

Maybe I should figure out and start paying attention to the "amber" modes.. I honestly have no clue what they do but I do hear the callouts once in a while..

I mostly focus on the paddocks, a bit on the TREX modes, and not starting MBs needlessly (trying to start them when something else is going on).

the amber modes are huge points. Amber pops/slings. I went in to Choas multiball around 400/500 mil and ended it with 2.4 bil (all during ball 1) because of amber slings and good jackpot hits too. And hitting ramps during amber ramps. I suggest paying attention to it for sure.

#3323 6 days ago

Is there a post somewhere explaining the amber modes and how to get them etc?

#3324 6 days ago
Quoted from delt31:

So about three weeks in of the super truck swap to the real JP Jeep and it's been great. Trick for me to get the weight perfect (just like original) was two normal screws in the front (taken from original car) and 1 longer screw back left. No screw in the right. Weight distributed much better and looks great. Very happy.[quoted image]

I wanted to do that, but the jeep I ordered from Ebay was fake. Could you PM me the source you used to get it?

Again copied from Tiltforums:

(they have an entire Wiki for the new .95 code)

Amber Bonus

The bumpers build your Amber Bonus throughout the entire game. Collect the Amber Bonus at the lit pops standup, which is lit by going through the rollover above the pops. Collecting the Amber Bonus does not reset it – it will relight and continue growing from the prior collected value. Capturing Dinos provides a one-time multiplier to your next Amber Bonus collect. If you capture multiple Dinos between Amber Bonus collects, then the captured Dino Amber multipliers stack.

Completing Fossil Set 3 will add a 10x multiplier to the next Amber Bonus.

Amber Frenzy: Each Super Supply Drop awards an Amber Frenzy for a given number of seconds, where you can collect your Amber Bonus by making certain shots.

Amber Pops: 20 seconds
Amber Targets: 30 seconds
Amber Slings: 40 seconds
Amber Ramps: 50 seconds

#3327 6 days ago

From what I can tell, if you start Amber Slings at 1M (for example), your next sling should count for 1.25M, then 1.5M, so on and so on...but they're aggregating. So sling hit 1 is 1M, sling hit 2 should be 1.25M but in fact it's 2.25M and sling 3 would be 3.75M (1M + 1.25M + 1.5M), hence the insane Amber Slings scores.

I got my LE a week ago. Spent the last 2 days trying to start CHAOS multiball. I was just about ready to give up for the night when I hit it. During the multiball I must have stacked a few other things because the ball save triggered at least 3 times. The machine was going crazy, I was just trying to hit whatever shot was blinking the most. Finished the ball with almost 700mil. What an awesome game!

Do I use this update file as a replacement for the Stern .95 and update as normal or do I need to do some tech whiz-bangery to finesse this onto the machine?

You update to .95 with the Stern files, then do this sound update.

#3337 5 days ago

Why would you do that? The sound update is original .95 code with sounds changed. Updating to .95 with the stern files is redundant.

Quoted from MrMikeman:

IMO If any update flashes the Node Boards I'd rather have the Stern factory update do it first in case of a warranty issue of possible bricking a Node Board rather than a non-Stern update.

I'm not saying that anything the Sound code reprogrammers are doing would cause such a problem, but then again even factory code updates have bricked Node Boards. Better safe than sorry.....

They way I understood pinball browser is that you load the NEW code (.95) in PB, apply the macros (change the sounds), then create an update file, which will only contain the changes from the original code (.95). Therefore to apply the sound changes you need to start with the .95 code.

Maybe I am wrong...

However, as AUKraut mentioned, there are other firmware updates(node boards) included which may not make it through the PB update file?

Is there a PB expert around here?

#3340 5 days ago

Anyone having high left outlane draining? Hard to get to the helopad? Well, I was. Until I got a good leveled playfield. I had it leveled (I thought), with a level on the playfield at multiple locations. I also used a 3' level on the rails. Looked good. But, it doesn't take much for that dang bubble to be just a hair off to make an effect on the play. During play... It wasn't totally obvious that the ball moved at all. Just a 'feel' that it seems to barely drift left.
So, I measured and had a imaginary 'line' on the playfield to roll a ball down to see if it rolled true to the target spot. It didn't. Missed left by maybe 1/4".
Raised the left front 3 turns, left rear 2 turns to true up the ball drop test.
What a difference!!! Shot's were smoother everywhere. Helopad was easy. Outbound ball from control tower smoother for an easy helopad shot, etc.
So, maybe others are having this symptom and this will help.

Feel free to give me @#$# about not being able to read a level

#3341 5 days ago

When you load the .95 stern rom in pinball browser, and apply the macros (and supply the sounds you want to change), and save the new rom, it will be the same as the stern .95 rom with sounds replaced. nothing else is changed. The point is, you do not have to update your game before making the modification. You simply update your game with the modified rom (.95).

All firmware updates are included with the modified rom, no different from the original rom.

Quoted from MrMikeman:

Well, I personally appreciate it.’I haven’t tried the code yet but plan to.

Is there a way to backup just settings and high scores so they can be reloaded after the custom update?

#3345 5 days ago

Ok so they told us defaulting the speakers to 4 ohms was intentional. But why the hell did they do that? I agree with others it sounds like shit and you have to reset the machine every startup. This is a stupid intentional change. They need to fix it. I’m definitely sending a bug complaint about it. Annoying when they do things that make no sense. I’m still really annoyed that Stern refuses to replace their noisy fans. Unbelievable.

#3346 5 days ago
Quoted from fooflighter:

The Trex and node board would be frustrating for sure and definitely warranty issues...but what exactly is wrong with the plunger? Springs and screws here and there and some alignment adjustment?.. coil stops and flipper rubber, I buy those in small bulk as they wear out...JP was designed with red rubber in mind for the collector, most pins don't have the red because of the quick wear rate of red vs black and cleanliness issues. What's up with the raptor? and set trap targets?? again, I had some minor tweaks but they were just loosening a screw or tightening a screw here and there to adjust the raptor bob rate hang up issues or tighten up the leaf spring screws to prevent target movement? I'm not disregarding your complaints but I've tweaked and taken the past 3 weeks to adjust and dial my game in...I think or have come to expect it is just part of the hobby as these machines are hand made on the assembly line and can't possibly meet the same standard each and every time..they can come close, but there's always going to be the need to tighten, loosen, adjust and sometimes replace. Everyone's threshold for "it play's perfect out of the box" is subjective and one person's "perfect" may be horrible to another and sometimes this site while great, may falsely lead people to the impression that these games are plug and play..my experience is they are far from it.
I actually love tinkering on my pins...call it an OCD obsession but don't stop playing them for issues and definitely don't take off work...I just play, tweak, fix, replace....and one day.. they get better to the point of just needing a wipedown and some wax...If you don't like doing these things and just like to play, then NIB is probably not for you in future pin acquisitions and may need a more, broken in game.
So, I can't nor can others answer your question truthfully or objectively because your experience with your pin is a subjective one...are you out of line to ask for a refund...man that's a tough one...you can ask but again, it's up to your distro and Stern support. I would say good luck with that but wouldn't expect it to happen.
Again, I'm not saying we shouldn't expect quality and reasonable functionality out of the box for the price tag, but something like a flipper coil stop??? I would get a new part from pinball life or marco (which ship most of their stuff the day of order) on my own and buy 6 more while I was at it - while I waited for the warranty part to arrive - and just continue to play...

fooflighter snaroff So much insight into my issues and expectations, my friends. Truly appreciate everything you've said. This is my first pin so while I've had a ton of legitimate physical issues with the game I am still learning what my expectations/threshold should be. What I explained to my dist today was, "man it would be great if Stern would set expectations from the get-go via a whitepaper or something." What I mean by that is it would be helpful if Stern had documentation such as, "the T-Rex is expected to catch the ball xx% of the time from a solid shot during mode a, b, c." Or, "the plunger should carry the ball around the loop xx% of the time from manual trigger, auto-plunge, etc." Or in terms of the T-Rex catch (which after all the physical issues have now been resolved for me) they could say, "success rates are dependent upon software updates, please refer to code update readme's past 0.xx up to 1.xx". I say this because I have to believe Stern has their own QC standard %'s when testing each game. If one or the other doesn't meet some threshold then it doesn't go out the door. It sounds like Stern can't really call those % out publicly but again I feel like they should. If I knew how often one or more any given "software" related action should fail, I may not be so attune to or concerned about things like the low % of the T-Rex catch.

Now, back to the customer service of my distributor... After jumping on the phone with him today I won't be asking for any refund. I was unaware that the amount of $ he's spent on sending his tech out has already obliterated his margin on the sale of my machine. He also expressed that mine has been an anomaly when it comes to the 10 LE's he sold. No one else has either a) had all of the same issues or b) has reported them (they may have fixed issues themselves or still haven't paid attention/cared). I trust now that I simply got a lemon, but one that can be sweetened back to expected. And Stern themselves have been good at sending me new parts (albeit a bit slow). In summary, I feel that my dist. is an amazing human being who is going above and beyond. He could have told me to F off but instead took losses to make sure all is right. And while I still have the T-Rex and plunger issues, I'm confident that he'll still run that to solution if needed.

Yes, the plunger is still an issue. I'm awaiting parts. The T-Rex has been fixed physically to where I can only imagine once Stern gets it right software wise, the catching issue will subside. fooflighter snaroff PM me if you want more specific answers to your questions.

I hope others don't have all of the same issues I'm having but if they do I hope their dist/seller is as communicative and helpful as mine has been.

Quoted from GamerRick:

Ok so they told us defaulting the speakers to 4 ohms was intentional. But why the hell did they do that? I agree with others it sounds like shit and you have to reset the machine every startup. This is a stupid intentional change. They need to fix it. I’m definitely sending a bug complaint about it. Annoying when they do things that make no sense. I’m still really annoyed that Stern refuses to replace their noisy fans. Unbelievable.

I don't understand why they would make any setting change every time a game is power cycled. I can see the setting going back to default after an update or something like that, but it automatically going back to "default" everytime you turn the game on seems crazy. Though, my big question is why does having it set to 4 Ohms sound bad when they are 4 Ohm speakers in the LE? That seems like it must be some sort of bug itself.

I'm not sure why they didn't set the cabinet to 4 as well. If you do this yourself, then turn up the volume you can get it to sound good with both set to 4.

Btw - I think they did the "set it to 4 on boot" thing because they couldn't just set the default or that would break the setting for the premium since it uses the same code as the LE.

Awesome! Hang in there. I was in the same boat with my first pins a year ago. Before you know it you'll be through the tweaking, adjusting, and fixing phase and just playing. I know it feels like a long slog now, but it'll be worth it in the end when it's all dialed in and playing great for you.

So is this just an LE issue? My updated prem sounds fine.
