FYI...if you put a piece of wood under the hole you're drilling, you won't end up with a ragged hole on the underside of the playfield.

There are various hard drive recovery services available, like this one:
https://www.krollontrack.com/services/data-recovery/hard-drive/
I assume that since the laptop was dropped, you may have a mechanical drive failure on your hands.
A few years back, someone I know sent in their drive for recovery, and that cost about $500.
Quoted from pinballrockstar:Yeah, it must be a mechanical problem due to the impact..
But i am saving it and will get it repaired by harddiskrecovery.nl , they repair the harddrive mechanically and recover data from it in a so called dustfree clean room.
Just read that today and it really makes sense?
The disk in there ain't broken? So everything must be still on it?
But for now i need my money to buy a new computer for the minion machine.
At the moment i am hauling the one from my business back and forth...so i can move on.
Yep, what they sometimes do is take apart the drive and put the platters into a new housing.
The drive is basically set up like a vinyl record player, except the head with the needle is actually a head with magnetic reader/writer and floats a few microns above the surface of the platter. Handling the platters has to be done in a clean room because dust particles and other debris are humongous by comparison and will interfere with the operation of the drive.
