I don't think the machine was technically in the car, it was more out than in! 
I have a similar car and it's just about 2cm (1 inch) too low to fit a game with the head folded down.
How annoying!

Could the problems with your lights be a technical problem in stead of a software one? Maybe disconnect some stuff and only have a few lights hooked up. There could be a fault in the wires or lights.
