Right this might be a daft question so chortle away

Mothers Californian Gold was instructions say

'With a damp microfiber'

Does this mean literally with water or damp from the wax applied to it?

A few drops of water in the cloth. It doesn't take much.

P21S. No left over residue. Do not let completely dry. Wipe off with clean microfiber cloth

It was a choice between that and the Mothers but the most recommendations went to Mothers so that's what I am using.
Seems to be doing a decent job so far

Mothers gives the US commercial free Formula 1 every season. Please support them . Oh and their wax is good too.

Early days for us in this restoration game and appreciate your experience too, on the 3rd coat now and 2 more to go

With either P21 or Mothers Carnauba apply a light coat letting it dry. Before wiping off the dried (hazy) layer. Then do a second coating. Remember do not slop this stuff on, and avoid the plastic playfield posts. The wax layer is a sacrificial layer between the ball and the playfield. If you play the game a lot, more frequent waxing will be needed.
