Funhouse is almost 30 years old. Mine has the original plastic gears with no issues.
The plastic repros may have been made cheaper than the factory ones.

I bought one of Al's gears years ago as a backup and haven't had to use it yet.
That's what I figured.
Plastic or metal, you still need to have a good lubricant on the teeth.
