Friendly reminder for anyone with an interest in seeing the Sorcerer playfield remade, CPR is currently taking expressions of interest and will push this project forward if they get 40-50 folks signed up. So if you'd be interested in a new Sorcerer playfield, and you haven't signed up already, please do so! (Scroll down the page to "THE BOUTIQUE ZONE" to find Sorcerer):

Been on that list for a while now. Hope it moves forward!

#1153 7 years ago

I am on the interest list. I want this done. I wonder how many they have now.

If anyone has spare plastics let me know. I'm looking for a set of slingshot plastics and a decent center target plastic. They don't have to be perfect, just better than what I have now (which have broken corners). Thanks.

I need a couple plastics too. If you find anyone that has some but only wants to sell as a set let me know!

PPS also still have Sorcerer backglasses available, but once they are gone we will likely not be running them again ...

Anyone have an issue with locked balls being kicked out when the second ball flies into the lock like a newtons cradle? I can fix it by putting washers under the bracket to lift it up a little but would rather not have to rig it up like that.

#1159 7 years ago

bend it up a bit.

#1160 7 years ago

I just finished tearing down and deep cleaning/shopping my play field on the sorcerer I picked up a couple weeks ago. It worked fine when I got it, but now when I power it on it just keeps firing the outhole kicker over and over again. I haven't dug in yet to get any ideas of what's going on but I figure I'd ask here first in case anyone had any ideas.

#1161 7 years ago

Bad outhole switch? It's detecting a ball so it's trying to kick it over.

I just snagged a Sorcerer for my folks as a gift for their birthdays and their anniversary...they love it. I'm looking to LED it out and was wondering what folks would recommend. Any experiences with the cointaker LED kit. Does sorcerer suffer from ghosting (i.e. do I need the non-ghosting LEDs)?

Thanks!

P.S. Pics would would appreciated!

Hey Per3Per3, I LED'd my sorcerer and it looks sweet. I just got the comet bulbs and used non-ghosting ones for the inserts. I used blue for the GI and red purple and green for the flasher pairs. I highly recommend LEDing it! Here is a video of mine...

One thing I will say after watching my own video is that the "halo" you see through the plastics and the backglass is not visible to the naked eye. Something with digital cameras and LED make them birghter when view via video. This is the same phenomenon that allows you to view ultraviolet LEDs only with a digital camera. Anyways, just trying to dodge the flamethrower

I appreciate the info and video. I only have experience with cointaker and pinballbulbs LEDs...any specific reason you went with comet?

I went with comet because it is less than half the cost of the others... I LED'd my sorcerer for probably around $50-$70 shipped.

I own some games but nothing earlier than a 90s williams game, so I was curious if there's a menu system for System 9 games like Sorcerer similar (but I'm sure less sophisticated) to DMD games? My folks are in Cleveland (I'm in Arlington, VA), so I don't have the machine in front of me. If there's a menu, can you explain how to access it?

Thanks!

Makes sense and it looks great! I appreciate it and the video is definitely helpful so I can get an idea of what to order.

Thanks again.

I'm looking to LED it out and was wondering what folks would recommend.

For what it's worth, here are my notes from the LEDs I bought for Sorcerer (mostly Comet 50/50 bulbs, http://www.cometpinball.com/product-p/1smd5050.htm, with a few specialty bulbs only available from Cointaker). I color-matched the inserts as identified below. For anything white I went with warm white, I would strongly discourage cool or sunlight white for a game with warm colors and a "torch light" theme like this. I like the Comet 50/50 bulbs since they're brighter than incandescents, but don't light the game up like a Christmas tree. I'm also a fan of Warm White rather than colored bulbs in the GI to maintain the original look of the artwork (and a number of people just leave the GI incandescent to better maintain that original look).

Re: ghosting, I have the LEDOCD board so no direct experience, but there have been at least some reports that of insert ghosting with conventional LED bulbs. So, unless you want to pick up an LEDOCD (a very cool if somewhat costly product), you may want to go with non-ghosting bulbs for the Playfield Inserts. Non-ghosting bulbs are not recommended for the GI or Backbox though, as those shouldn't suffer from ghosting regardless.

For the inserts I went with the comet 1smd frosted and color matched. GI I left incandescents. Very very happy. The warm glow of the GI helps this game. Non ghosting for the inserts

Awesome write up, thanks for sharing! One thing I will mention is that the 12v flashers from comet will work in place of the #63 flashers from coin taker (and theey are cheaper). All you gotta do is cut the sand block resitor on each flasher board which removes the warming circuit which ghosts the comet flasher. This will feed 6v to the comet flashers to light them up enough. If you still want the full 12v to feed them even brighter you can wire the flasher pairs in parallel very easily.

If I'm reading your list correctly, are you saying that there are 42 bulbs (plus two flashers) in the backbox and 23 GI bulbs?

Thanks!

#1173 7 years ago

Per3per3, I'm on the west side of Cleveland and can help adjust menu settings or just show your parents, etc. The buttons are in the coin door and the adjustments are in the score displays by number. The values are in the manual.

I second the mention of the LED OCD board. I love the fade effect it brings back to the LEDs. I haven't personally LED'd my Sorcerer yet as I'm afraid to lose that awesome glow effect on the art that incandescents provide. But I have the LED OCD board in 3 other games.

#1174 7 years ago

Hey guys,

I just picked up a sorcerer a couple of days ago. The ramp lock, the left sling and the drop target coil were not firing. I pulled the board and tested the transistors. I found some bad ones and some questionable soldering, so I fixed what I found. The left sling and the ramp lock are now working, but the drop target coil isn't. Does anyone know what transistor fires this coil? I will look further at the coil tomorrow. It doesn't look burned and isn't seized, but the previous owner blocked the target so they could never drop so he could play the game without them.

thanks,
aaron

Thinking of selling my Sorcerer.
It was working perfectly but the playfield was bad, so I sent it to John to restore.
It's supposed to be done anytime now. Mine is one of the last 3 that was switched from direct ink to having an overlay put on because his printer stopped direct printing playfields.
I've pretty much lost interest in putting it back together at this point.
Just wondering if there is anybody in BC Canada looking for a project? (I'm in Victoria)
Cabinet is pretty nice and back glass is mint.

I'm in sort of the same boat with my Space Shuttle. Still have some hope though.

The art for Space Shuttle is here. But I need some corrections done for overlay printing. They will be late this year.

my coil for my drop target bank is bad on my sorcerer. it says it is a g-23-750. Marco only has sa-23-750. Will this work? I don't really know what the prefix letters stand for. I know the numbers are the size of the wire and the winds.

thanks,
aaron

#1179 7 years ago

Just joined the club this weekend. The playfield is fairly beat, but it came with an extra populated PF and the backglass is MINT.

The only issue with the game, that I can find, is that its missing the speech. I ran the sound test and none of the roms say anything. They do have the sound effects. Should I just pick up a new set of ROMS or is there another avenue I should explore first?

Is there speech during game play? My speech test does not say the words either...

#1182 7 years ago

definitely speech. "feel my power" right before multiball starts just to name one.

Yeah and he should say "you are done!" or "well done mortal" or "you are the master, I am done!" that last one is my favorite! Mine says all this during game play but I remember the speech test it didn't say these phrases. Weird.

Quoted from beardorew:

Just joined the club this weekend. The playfield is fairly beat, but it came with an extra populated PF and the backglass is MINT.
The only issue with the game, that I can find, is that its missing the speech. I ran the sound test and none of the roms say anything. They do have the sound effects. Should I just pick up a new set of ROMS or is there another avenue I should explore first?

I just got one of these for my folks and they started experiencing issues with garbled speech (the sound effects were 100%) and then no speech at all. It's either the ribbon cable on the sound board going to the main or bad roms. I got them a new sound board ($50) which solved both problems and now it's perfect. You can't easily replace the ribbon cable since it's soldered into the sound board and is a 40 pin...so it's not really worth the effort to detach it and replace it with a new ribbon.

That all being said, if this is just a bad rom or two then it would be cheaper to just replace those.

Thanks. I was hoping to avoid the extra shipping charge. It is also a hassle to try to get him during the day. His phone stays pretty busy. Does anyone know what difference the letters make?

According to Pinball Medic, the prefix designates the type of sleeve. Plastic or aluminum, with or without flange.

beardorew - I know the guy you picked that up from. I had been nagging him to sell me just the extra playfield for a while, but he felt it was better as a package deal.

I'm looking for a spare playfield for my Sorcerer as well. Any condition would be fine. So if you do a playfield swap, and want to sell me the old one send me a PM. Or if any other Sorcerer owners have a beat up spare they'd be willing to part with, anything not warped will do.

Have you gotten on the CPR boutique preorder list?

I'm planning on cleaning up and clearing the other playfield in the spring. Would be willing to sell the old one once that is done.

The speech issue was from the pot on the speech board being turned off, but it seems to have some issues and sometimes takes the sound out completely if its not balanced just so. Probably need to replace both pots.

That CPR Playfield NEEDS to be made.

I had planned on signing up for that, and I hope they do run them. It's such a beautiful game. Then again, I would like to get a decent playfield in the game sometime within the next few months. CPR will be years out, even if they get enough people on the list today.

Please do sign up if you think there's a reasonable chance you'd be interested if they make a Sorcerer playfield -- it's just an expression of interest, not a firm commitment, and every vote helps!

I have officially signed up. I still want a used one!

Don't hate me, but the irony of the Sorcerer playfield artwork always makes me laugh, even though it's one of my top 5 games. Most of my favorite pins have artwork that's visually exciting and dramatic - spaceships, robots, mythical monsters, warriors, explosions, etc. What's the most prominent image on a Sorc playfield? Essentially, it's an old man with a beard. It's someone's grandpa. Always cracks me up before a game.

But within that old beard lies immense power!

With a great beard comes great responsibility.
I love the art on Sorcerer. I want to buy an early 70's Chevy van and have the Sorcerer wizards painted on the side.
